AN IDEA THAT MAKES DOLLARS 
AND SENSE

This seems to 
be the time of 
year when serious 
college football fans 
and media pundits 
– and I guess I am 
now both of them 
– weigh in on the 
debate about whether college football should 
go to a playoff format similar to the NFL’s. 
I’m not been a fan of a real “playoff” system, 
but what I am proposing is a compromise. 

My stance is we keep the bowl format 
pretty much in place, but tweak it to the 
benefit of everyone. I am looking at this 
from the viewpoint of a college coach.

There would be the four traditional BCS 
bowl games, plus a championship game. I 
would have conference champions meet in 
three of the BCS bowl games and two wild-
card teams meet in the fourth. From those 
results, a final game would be played.

Currently, the championship game teams 
are determined at the end of the regular 
season, prior to the bowl selections, and 
bowl results have nothing to do with the last 
game of the college season. This does not 
seem to a fair way to determine the national 
championship team. 

To begin with, here would be my BCS 
bowl lineup:

Rose Bowl -- Big 10 champion vs. Pac-12 
champion.

Orange Bowl -- Big 12 champion vs. Big 
East champion.

Sugar Bowl -- SEC champion vs. ACC 
champion.

Fiesta Bowl -- Two wild-card teams from 
conferences or independents, such as Notre 
Dame or Boise State selected according to 
their record, ranking and their competition. 
This year one of the two teams would have 
been Alabama since the Crimson Tide was 
not the SEC champion.

From these four games, the two winning 
teams with the highest ranking would meet 
for the national championship. 

NCAA President Emmert recently 
suggested that a four-team playoff – a 
Football Final Four, if you will -- might be 
in place by the 2014 season. Why do I think 
four teams should not meet in semi-finals? 
Because that would mean that two teams 
play two extra games. I think one extra 
game following the bowl season makes more 
sense. With the divisions in conferences, the 
division leaders already play one more game 
to decide the champion of each conference. 
That’s what we have now, except that 
national championship game participants 
are determined at the end of the regular 
season rather than, as I suggest, at the end of 
the bowl season.

The questions I hear you all asking: “Who 
will determine the wild-card and final two 
teams?” and “How will this be decided?” 
These are legitimate and important 
questions. I suggest some kind of committee 
of coaches who will not be concerned with 
how well a team travels, how many dollars 
they will bring to a game, and other such 
financial issues. 

I’d also like to see a two-week break between 
the BCS bowl games and the championship 
game, which preferably would be played on 
a Monday night to avoid competing with the 
NFL playoffs. The two-week break would 
allow for the all important promotional 
period, and this would allow more time for 
coaches and players to prepare and plan for 
games. Also, staging a major event such as 
this involves travel and accommodations, 
and more details than most are aware of. 

I’ve always believed the college 
championship game should be played at the 
Rose Bowl, but that probably isn’t going to 
happen. A more likely scenario would be for 
the title game to rotate among the BCS bowl 
game sites, as it does now.

I think such a format would lead to a game 
equal in stature to the Super Bowl, bringing 
in no telling how much money. And let’s 
face it, dollars are involved. Here is a key 
element to my suggestion: Each of the 120 
schools playing Division I-A football would 
get a guarantee of $1 million from the gross 
receipts, with the remaining balance going 
for game expenses and distribution to the 
participating teams.

Who wouldn’t vote for that? What do you 
think?

Local life long resident, and 18 year old 
Loyola High School Senior Nick Budincich, 
competed in two throwing events for the 
Indoor California State Track and Field 
Championships this past weekend in Fresno. 
Budincich qualified in meets at Paramount 
High School and Cerritos College earlier 
this month, throwing the 12 lbs. shot, and 
25 pound weight to a qualifying distance to 
compete for the state title.

Loyola’s weight man won the “25 lbs. 
weight throw” State Title with a lifetime 
best of 62’5” bettering his prior PR of 57’1” 
set the week earlier at Cerritos. He was 7 
feet farther from the second place finisher. 
Budincich, an hour later, competed in the 
State Finals in the indoor shot put throwing 
53’10” behind Burroughs high school senior 
Jason Kovar from Ridgecrest, who won the 
event at 58’3”.

Last June 5th in Fresno, CA., Budincich 
stunned competitors in the outdoor State 
Meet by throwing 182’9” in the discus to 
take second place in the competition, when 
he came in seeded 13th. After failing to 
qualify in the shot put in the CIF Masters 
meet last year, he was able to focus all his 
attention on the discus. He made up for his 
CIF Masters State shot put disqualification 
by getting a new lifetime best in the shot put 
in Eugene, Oregon last June 25 with a throw 
of 61’10.5”, and helping Loyola HS win its 
first High School National Championship.

The Loyola High School senior has 
already verbally committed to attend 
Stanford University in the fall, after head 
coach Edrick Floreal, and “throws coach” 
Andrew Ninnow offered him a track and 
field scholarship for four years in Palo Alto 
last November. “It was a difficult decision 
to pick between USC and Stanford”, (his 
first two choices), Budincich said, “because 
my Dad was an All American shot putter 
there and I really have high goals of beating 
his marks”. Budincich was mentored and 
coached by his father Michael, (a Pasadena 
chiropractor) in the shot put and discus 
throw since he was in the 5th grade at 
Pasadena’s High Point Academy, where he 
holds school and league records, and earned 
the coveted “Male Athlete of the Year” award 
upon graduation in 2008.

Jason Kovar from Ridgecrest will be 
Budincich’s main competition in the shot 
and discus for the rest of the season. Nick 
felt relaxed and confident entering the 
competition last Saturday, as he did not have 
the pressure from college recruiters who 
may be there, since he is already committed 
to “The Cardinal”. “The big meets for me 
will be in May and June, when I compete for 
my school to try to win a team CIF title, State 
title, and repeat as National Champions in 
the NIKE National Meet, like we did last 
year in Eugene’, said Budincich.

With an individual State Title already 
under his belt in the 25lbs. weight throw, a 
second in the State indoor shot, and a second 
in the State discus last year, Budincich has 
his goals set high of earning another State 
title in discus or shot this June at Buchanan 
High school in Fresno.
