As part of the Waterworks 
Aquatics mission in striving 
to educate and motivate people 
of all ages to be safer in the 
water and learn proper swimming 
technique, Waterworks 
has created a Scholarship Program 
for the community. 

Waterworks Aquatics is committed 
to provide access and 
ensure that no one is denied 
an opportunity to participate 
in their aquatics programming 
because of economic 
hardship. Scholarships for 
children, families and seniors 
are available for a variety of 
programs.

Scholarship applications are 
available year-round. Please 
note that all applications are 
reviewed carefully; however, 
there is no guarantee of

Household Hazardous Waste 
Round-up will occur on Saturday, 
August 18th from 
9:00am until 2:00pm. The

JOSEPH DAMIEN 
FOLEY

Joe “Smiley” Foley, 52, a 
lifelong resident of Sierra 
Madre, peacefully departed 
this life to be with the Lord 
Jesus Christ on July 24, 2012. 
Joe succumbed to cancer 
at the Shea Rehabilitation 
Center in Whittier, CA. Joe 
loved his family, friends, and 
his home in the upper canyon 
in Sierra Madre. He relished 
sitting in his yard, listening 
to the birds and taking in the 
canyon’s heartbeat.

Joe was a beloved son, brother, 
uncle, and friend to many. He is survived by:

His parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ralph & Beverly Foley of Mission, TX;

His sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Larry & Alyn Hillhouse 
of Long Beach, CA;

His brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Barry & Marilyn Bazzell 
of Pleasant View, TN;

His brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Jeffrey & Barbara Bazzell 
of Grand Prairie, TX;

His brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Danny & Eva Bazzell of 
Rosamond, CA;

His brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Paul & Kristi Foley of 
Covina, CA;

His nieces and nephews:

Mr. & Mrs. Brian & Amy Foster of Fort Bragg, NC;

Mr. William Hillhouse of Long Beach, CA;

Mr. Timothy Bazzell of Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan;

Joe’s body was cremated. The family wishes to thank all you who 
knew Joe and appreciated his life and value to this world. He was 
a gentle, caring soul, who will be missed until we are joyfully 
reunited on the Resurrection Day.

Monday July 23, 2012

At approximately 4:45 pm, a 33 year old male entered the Post Office at 65 S. Baldwin Avenue and 
attempted to purchase $240.00 worth of stamps with a fraudulent check. The postal employee 
recognized the suspect from a Grand Theft and Burglary crime bulletin that had recently been 
circulated. The police were notified and the suspect was apprehended as he exited the Post Office. He 
was subsequently booked for Burglary and Possession of a Fraudulent Check.

Wednesday July 25, 2012

At 7:45 pm officers responded to a report of a possible burglary in progress at the Sierra Madre 
Middle School Upper Campus at 160 N. Canon. On arrival, the officers observed a white bag 
containing school supplies on the ground outside one of the classroom bungalows. Moments later 
two individuals were observed running between buildings and taken into custody without incident. 
The investigation determined that these individuals had entered the bungalow through an unsecured 
window and removed school supplies from several cabinets. Two juveniles, 14 and 15 years of age, 
were arrested for Burglary and released to their parents. 

Friday July 27, 2012

At 8:20 am, officers conducted a traffic stop at Santa Anita Avenue and Grandview Avenue. While 
interviewing the driver, the officer smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. 
The driver admitted that he had marijuana in his backpack. The officer subsequently recovered 1.4 
grams of concentrated cannabis (Hash) from the backpack and arrested the driver for possession of 
the item. One of the passengers was also arrested on a $30,000.00 warrant issued by South Gate Police 
Department. 

Saturday July 28, 2012

At 9 am, officers conducting a traffic stop in the 100 block of South Michillinda Avenue discovered 
that the driver was in possession of 1.1 grams of Methamphetamine. The 34 year old female driver 
was booked for possession of a controlled substance.

SIERRA MADRE FREE CONCERT 
IN THE PARK SERIES - Presented by 
Athens Services and the Sierra Madre Issei 
Memorial Foundation

Join the City of Sierra Madre this summer for the Concerts 
in the Park, beginning Sunday, July 8, 2012 and occurring 
every Sunday through August 26, 2012. The concerts are FREE 
thanks to the support of Athens Services and the Sierra Madre 
Issei Memorial Foundation, along with numerous community 
hosts. Concerts begin at 6:00pm and run through 8:00pm. 
All concerts will be held at the Memorial Park Bandshell, 222 
W. Sierra Madre Blvd. next to City Hall. Seating is on the 
green so remember to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Alcohol 
is prohibited. Spectators are encouraged to support local 
organizations that may provide refreshments. For additional
