SCHOOL DIRECTORY

PASADENA, Calif. Pasadena Showcase
House for the Arts (PSHA) awarded $28,000
to ten (10) exceptionally talented young
musicians at its annual Pasadena Showcase
House Instrumental Competition Finals
held on February 16, 2013 at The Colburn
School. For the last 48 years, PSHA has
raised funds generated by proceeds from
the Pasadena Showcase House of Design
to promote youth music education and
the Los Angeles Philharmonic. To date,
PSHA has donated over $18 million to
these programs. Funds have also provided
opportunities for over 350,000 children to
discover, enjoy, and study classical music.

The Pasadena Showcase House
Instrumental Competition has awarded
nearly $500,000 in prize money since it
began in 1985. String, woodwind and brass
players ages 16 to 24 living or attending
school in Southern California, compete
for prizes ranging from $500 to the Grand
Prize of $6000. The judging panel includes
members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic
Orchestra and the prize monies for
Instrumental Competition are provided
from the proceeds of PSHA’s annual benefit
event, the Pasadena Showcase House of
Design.

Judging Chair, Christopher Still, trumpet,
commented “This competition attracts the
very best talent in Southern California. I
am very impressed by the high caliber of
artistry and mastery of the participants.
The competition has been, and continues
to be, a launching point for these young
musicians’ very promising careers.” In
addition to Mr. Still, the Judging Panel
included Ethan Bearman, french horn,
Michael Myers, trumpet, Elise Shope,
flute, Michele Grego, bassoon, Gloria
Lum, cello, and Jin-Shan Dai, Violin.
The entire Judging Panel currently
holds positions of prominence with the
Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Prior to the announcement of the winners,
PSHA President Kathryn Hofgaarden
told the excited group of students, “PSHA
members believe in you, the gifted finalists
that are here this evening. You are
amazing. Congratulations on your many
accomplishments, and it is our privilege to
contribute to your ongoing education.”

“The Instrumental Competition is one of
our signature programs. It was a pleasure
for us, the members of PSHA, to support
and highlight these talented young
musicians”, commented Chini Johnson-
Taylor, Competition Chair.

MT. SIERRA COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
HOLDS 1ST ANNUAL MEETING

Mt Sierra College Alumni Association held its first 2013
meeting on February 27. Graduates from the Media Arts &
Design, Business Administration, Information Technology and
Telecommunications Technology attended the event held at the
Mt. Sierra College Auditorium.

Leading the discussion was Craig Woods, 2007 Alumnus,
suggesting that the association strengthen its participation
in as many community events as possible. He recommended
contributions toward Habitat for Humanity and a possible walk/
run-a-thon to assist the local non-profit organizations.

Moreover, Geoffrey Nutting, 2012 Alumnus, expressed his
willingness to spread the word on his great experience at Mt.
Sierra College to high school students and administrators.

The group also took steps to create a presence on prominent
social networking sights such as Facebook and Twitter. Branding
the association through the introduction of alumni apparel was
also discussed during the meeting.

Tawny Hernandez, Director of Mt. Sierra College Career
Services, who took the lead on organizing the gathering stated:
“There is great enthusiasm and momentum among members. I
am confident that we will continue our efforts and the Association
will grow in the coming years.” The next meeting is scheduled for
March 27, 2013.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show

Movie Reviews Especially for Teens & ‘Tweens

DARK SKIES

 What makes a scary movie
good? Good plot, interesting
characters, and having an
actually terrifying scene every
once and a while. These have
been lacking in horror movies
lately. However, ‘Dark Skies’
does all these things and more.

 Lacy (Keri Russell) and
Daniel Barrett (Josh Hamilton)
are just trying to live a normal
life, with their two sons Jesse
(Dakota Goyo) and Sam
(Kadan Rockett), when strange
things begin to happen: the
house is broken into but there
are no signs of intrusion,
birds fly into the windows,
and scariest of all, Sam, the
youngest child, is having nightmares about the “sandman”. Do
these events have anything to do with each other? Or are they just
going crazy?

The thing that makes ‘Dark Skies’ so frightening is its
ability to make strange events in everyday life scary. It seems
like this could happen to anyone, while other horror movies
get so caught up in trying to be scary, they just end up seeming
ridiculous. If you want a truly horrifying movie, that will stay
with you after you leave the theater, go see ‘Dark Skies’.
