BAHOOKAS TO CLOSE

Some twenty-five years ago (has it been that
long?) my dad, Elmer Dills gave a glowing TV review report about Bahooka on Rosemead Blvd. Not
to kick a dog while it’s down, but going to Bahooka was more of an adventure than a food experience
- lots of fun, from the Mai Tais served in a mini crater salad bowl to the Hawaiian themes and of
course those fish tanks!! How many of you came just to see Rufus the fish? Insiders tell me that the
new property owner wants to put a dumpling restaurant in its stead. I’ll keep you posted on that. As
far as Bahooka, look for a line of salad dressings coming to a supermarket near you. Rest in peace,
my friend!! You will be missed.

Cameron’s Seafood

Who says adversaries can’t have a peaceful lunch? Just last week I met up with Veronica Lopez,
Queen of Fundraising for Radio Station KPCC (hopefully you remember that I am on KABC Radio
on weekends) at Cameron’s. For over 27 years Cameron’s Seafood has been a favorite in Pasadena.
Inspired by the San Francisco fish houses that sit upon the bay, Cameron’s Seafood provides the
just-off-the-boat freshness that every
seafood lover is searching for. I’ll say
this about Cameron’s, too - you won’t
starve, the portions are abundant! Do
you remember that old wives tale (or
was it my dad?) that said “the closer
to the ocean the worst the seafood is”?
How can that be? Or another doozy
is “never go to a seafood restaurant
on Sunday night”. I have been going
to Cameron’s Seafood Restaurant
on Colorado as far back as I can
remember, though I must admit, not
until recently did I delve into the
menu. I found myself going to the
bar for that San Francisco sourdough
bread and the Dills-approved clam
chowder still only ($7). By the way that
is a heck of an endorsement.

Just this past week I sat in
the dining room and I had
the Ahi Tuna (lunch price
is $15, and well worth it)
with sides and plenty of
fresh fruit -- I recommend
it seared. Veronica got the
Baked Idaho Picnic ($13; see
picture to believe) a double-
baked Idaho potato which
comes stuffed with cheese,
broccoli and shrimp, and
if you can believe it, a very
decent Caesar salad. Cheese
lovers rejoice!! The only
misstep was the calamari
- too many rings for me. I
liked the yellow bell pepper
touch - maybe they need to come out hotter or we just had too much food to eat them fast enough. I
have always wondered why Cameron’s doesn’t receive a higher satisfaction rate among local seafood
seekers, because for my money it’s damn good!! Cameron’s is decorated in soft woods and plenty
of black and white pictures of, you got it... fish!! They feature a full bar area for dining or a drink,
and many of the servers have been there for a while so the knowledge of the menu shouldn’t be a
problem. Another bonus is free parking. Cameron’s Seafood for exact hours check out the website at
camerons4fish.com. Small seafood case for those who want to cook it at home.
