Fire Captain Saves Man
during Gruesome Incident

Burglar,
Identity
Theft
Suspect
Arrested

 Pasadena Fire Captain Art
Hurtado describe Thursday
morning the scene at a hardware
store the day before in which he
saved the life of an unidentified
man who deliberately picked up
saws and cut his own arms to
the bone.

The incident happened inside
a Home Depot store in West
Covina.

 “I walked in, there was
pandemonium in the store, a lot
of chaos, people were running
all different directions,”
Hurtado said. “I made a beeline
towards the police officers that I
saw there trying to render care
to a person on the ground.”

Hurtado said there was blood
down many aisles. The man
was face down in a large pool of
blood.

 “I didn’t have any equipment
like I would at work so I just
improvised,” he said. “I knew
we had to stop the bleeding. I
didn’t know if he was or wasn’t
going to make it.”

 Hurtado said he then yelled
out for some rope and made a
tourniquet for one arm. West
Covina paramedics took over
Hurtado said.

 According to West Covina
police around 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday a man, only
described as in this 50s, picked
up saws normally used for
drywall and cut both his arms
near the elbows to the bone.

 The incident is being
investigated as an attempted
suicide. At press time, the man
was in critical condition at a
local hospital.

Altadena Detectives
investigating a burglary
and identity theft case
served search warrants at
three separate locations
in Pasadena over the last
month leading to the arrest
of a woman last week
wanted in connection with
the crimes.

 Police say the suspect
Aqualina Jaime had gained
access to a victim’s credit
accounts and fraudulently
obtained thousands of
dollars in cash advances on
their credit cards. Jaime also
made several purchases at
stores in Pasadena, Duarte,
and Los Angeles.

 According to police, the
first location was searched
on March 11 and the
other two locations were
searched on April 4. The
investigation started Jan.
31 when a resident of
Altadena noticed several
unauthorized, high-dollar,
transactions on her credit
card. The ensuing complex
investigation led detectives
to the suspect’s identity
police said.

 Detectives located Jaime
on April 4, and arrested her
for burglary, identity theft,
and grand theft.

 The Los Angeles County
District Attorney’s Office
filed 14 felony counts
against the suspect Tuesday.
She is being held in lieu of
$345,000 bail.

City Bans New Recycling Facilities

 The city council unanimously
approved Monday night the
extension of urgency ordinance
prohibiting the approval of
new recycling facilities, the
expansion or modification
of existing facilities citing
concerns of secondary impacts
of recycling centers including
transient activity, drunkenness,
loitering and trash.

 “We’re all familiar with the
issue, Just as an update, we did
have a large recycling center that
closed at Lake Ave. and Orange
Grove Blvd. that is now gone,”
Councilmember Victor Gordo
said. “I think that gives us
another basis for continuing the
interim ordinance in order to
ensure that our new regulations
are in place if in fact that
property owner were to allow a
new operator.”

 A security guard working at
rePLANET Recycling located
at Lake Ave and Walnut Street
said he thought Gordo may
have been mistaken explaining
that rePLANET had just shut
down a facility at Lake Ave. and
Washington Blvd.

 He also attributed recent long
lines and implementing security
guards to the ordinance.

City Manager Michael Beck
said the ordinance would last 12
months.

 “The reason for the continuation
of time is really based on the
fact that we would, one, like to
study alternatives that other
cities have looked at in regard to
recycling ordinance regulations
and then the reality, in Pasadena
we would like to have a number
of community meetings.” Beck
said.

 A number of resident asked
that they shorten the ordinance
time saying recycling should be
a main priority in the city,

Llama Lady Turned Pirate
Chosen Doo Dah Queen

Avast, me hearties, the
queen has been chosen!

Hours of Doo Dah madness
ended Sunday with a royal
nod to this year’s parade
queen, Susann Edmonds, an
enthusiastic signing woman o’
pirate that wowed judges with
her wit, dress and well thought
out routine —including
homemade cocktail elixirs
given to the 50 judges.

 “She [Edmonds] just does
a million stuff and so full of
energy,” Doo Dah organizer
Tom Coston said. “She’s a really
cool local person and will make
a great Doo Dah representative.”

 Edmonds plans to walk
a Llama down the parade
route during this year’s 36th
Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah
Parade April 27. She said she is
best known in Altadena as the
Llama Lady.

“I was the one who changed
the laws in LA County so that
Llamas were no longer exotic
animals and now livestock,”
Edmonds said explaining that
the law was changed in 2001
after a 22 month fight to keep
Llamas on her property.

 “Shortly after that, Llamas
went down the Rose Parade
route,” she said with a sneer.

The Doo Dah Parade is often
referred to as the twisted sister
of the conventional Rose
Parade.

 Edmonds said that although
she no longer owns Llamas
herself; she plans to borrow one
from a friend.

 Edmonds also said she owns
the Llama Lounge in Altadena,
“We turned the corral into a
pub,”

 Most recently, she is known
for her gardening, which she
said will be featured in the
upcoming month’s Country
Living magazine. She is also
outspoken against a new
Walmart neighborhood market
in Altadena.

 “Support small businesses,” she
said. “Not ones that suck money
from the economy.”

 Edmonds said the cocktail
elixirs are part of a small
business she owns, Jabberwocky
Foods. They are a 15th century
maritime recipe. The elixirs
will be for sale, she said, with
all the proceeds going to the
Light Bringer Project, the
nonprofit, Pasadena-based arts
organization that also oversees
Doo Dah.

 The judges, most of whom
themselves are former
queens, said Edmonds had
stiff competition from Mia
Bonadonna, third runner up,
who incorporated four large
pizzas into her performance
and Tanya Piana, second runner
up, who danced in burlesque
style with pasties set to a punk
rock tune; and the belly dancer
extraordinaire, Narayana, who
was first runner up.

 The 36th Occasional Doo Dah
Parade steps off at 11am along
Colorado Boulevard in East
Pasadena.

Council Approves
Glenarm Power Plant EIR

Pasadena City Council, late
Monday night, approved the
Environmental Impact Report
for the Glenarm Power Plant
Repowering Project; a move
city staff said will secure a more
reliable and environmentally
responsible energy future for
the city and Pasadena Water
and Power customers.

 “This is an important
undertaking by Pasadena Water
and Power to meet our City’s
energy needs with modern,
efficient and environmentally
friendly equipment that will
serve our residents and provide
power for new and existing
businesses as our local economy
continues to grow,” Pasadena
Mayor Bill Bogaard said.

 The Glenarm Power Plant
Repowering Project will replace
an antiquated, steam-generating
power plant with a new, state-
of-the-art, 71-megawatt natural
gas powered generator and
the best available air pollution
control systems. The new
power plant will generate
power about 30 percent more
efficiently and will augment the
reliability of the City’s electrical
system when conditions are
unfavorable for wind and solar
energy production.

 “By generating power locally,
we can continue to provide
uninterrupted power to our
customers when the City’s
electrical demand exceeds
its import capacity and also
help integrate solar and wind
renewable energy resources
into our portfolio,” said Phyllis
Currie, General Manager of
Pasadena Water and Power.
“It will reduce the City’s
dependence on purchases of
energy from the market, the
cost of which can spike when
demand for power is high.”

 Plans for the project, which
is expected to be operating
by the end of 2015, have been
included in the City’s capital
improvement program for a
number of years. Cost estimates
of $115.6 million, first projected
in 2010, are under review by
expert utility consultants.
With the EIR now approved,
next steps include developing
a financing plan and securing
the required building and air-
quality permits.

 The Glenarm Power Plant, first
built in 1907, is a block south of
the Metro Gold Line’s Fillmore
Station on East Glenarm Street,
between Fair Oaks Boulevard
and the 110 Freeway. The
facility includes the landmark
Glenarm building and its
iconic, Art Deco fountain.

Coffee & Chat. Pasadena
Police Officers assigned to the
Community Services Section -
Neighborhood Outreach Unit
have taken to the streets in a

chat with community members
in their neighborhoods.

 The Mobile Command Post is
being utilized as a highly visible
and recognizable platform from
which to host informal curbside
coffee & chats with residents
in neighborhoods throughout
Pasadena. These informal
meetings allow for neighbors
and their children to step out of
their homes and to be greeted
at the curbside by uniformed
officers operating the Mobile
Command Post. It’s an excellent
opportunity for neighbors to
socialize and meet with officers
and our police volunteers while
sharing information that can
drive enforcement efforts and
deter crime.

 The Mobile Command Post
has been deployed into many
