Rumors?
Where there is smoke there is fire. Well, okay, I hope there is no fire. Panda Inn in Ontario just
completed a renovation, I hear it looks great. My sources tell me that a similar plan is slated for this
summer in Pasadena. Oh no, where will I go for my Summer Mai Tais? One good place is the Canoe
House in South Pasadena. Owner Dave Yost after much prodding from yours truly has beefed up
the pour to a 15 oz Mai Tai. I still love the ones at Islands Restaurant and Trader Vic’s Mai Tais are
legendary, but the Canoe House is coming on strong. I’m headed to Santa Barbara for a few days,
anyone interested in joining me. Here are the details.

A BITE OF CHINA IS COMING
California State University Long Beach will hold the Chinese Food and
Culture Festival from April 22 - 25, 2013.
The Opening Ceremony will held on April 22,
2013, and will include presentations and remarks
by CSULB leadership and Chinese dignitaries.
The ceremony will also include Chinese musical
performances and a Bian Lian (face-changing)
performance. Immediately following the ceremony
there will be a Chinese banquet in the University
Student Union Ballroom.
Martin Yan and his team of chefs will select the best
ingredients and prepare an authentic meal featuring
regional Chinese cuisine. The evening will also
include live Chinese music.
The event, which is an activity in the @CHINA
series, is intended to introduce students to Chinese
food culture and local customs. The festival will
also feature a contest for local college students to
create a promotional plan for the popular Chinese
Television documentary series, “A Bite of China”, to
an American audience.
China is a country rich in culinary traditions and this
seven-part documentary series offers insights into
the geographical, historical and cultural dimensions
of what the Chinese people eat while learning about
Chinese culture through its cuisine.
The festival presents an opportunity for five participants to win amazing prizes by developing and
submitting a marketing plan for promoting A Bite of China to American audiences. Participating
CSULB students and community members will learn about Chinese culture and cuisine while
showcasing their creativity and marketing skills.
Seating for the banquet is limited. If you wish to attend, please visit: www.ccpe.csulb.edu/chinesefcf,
download the @China app to reserve tickets.
We’d like to hear from you!
