JOIN THE CITY OF SIERRA
MADRE’S ANNUAL BLOOD
DRIVE!
Save the date! Friday, November 8th the Sierra Madre
Community Services Department and American Red Cross
are hosting a Community Blood Drive from 10:00am to 4:00
pm. This life saving event takes place at the Sierra Madre
Community Recreation Center, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., and
is open to the public. Individuals who are 17 years of age or
older, 110 pounds or more and are in generally good health are
eligible to donate blood. If you have recently donated blood,
you must wait 56 days before your next donation.
Donating blood is a simple and short process. Blood donation
is a four step process: registration, medical history and
mini-physical, donation and refreshments. The actual blood
donation only takes 10-12 minutes of your time! One donation
can help save the lives of up to three people! This is a great way
to help others and contribute to the American Red Cross. To
schedule an appointment, please visit www.redcrossblood.org
or contact the Community Services Department at (626) 355-
7394. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are encouraged.
ASCENSION CHURCH EVENSONG – TO
HONOR VETERANS
Sierra Madre’s Village Church – Ascension - invites the community
to a Choral Evensong to honor those men and women who’ve
served in our armed forces. The Episcopal Church of the Ascension
will be presenting a Choral Evensong for Veterans Day, on Sunday,
November 10, at 5:00 p.m. Sung by Ascension’s Choir, led by Dr.
Debora Huffman, Director of Music and Organist, this traditional
Anglican service of meditation, prayer, and song will feature music
written primarily by American composers, to include:
Choral Fanfare for a Patriotic Occasion by Mark Schweizer;
Preces and Responses, as well as Phos Hilaron by Robert Lehmann;
Magnificat and Nunc Dimittus by Robert J. Powell;
Blessed Is the Nation by Allen Orton Gibbs;
O Lord, Support Us by Carlton T. Russell;
I Vow to Thee, My Country by Gustav Holst, arranged by James
Kirkby.
The service will begin with the organ voluntary, Meditation, by Leo
Sowerby and will conclude on a festive note with Dudley Buck’s
Concert Variations on The Star Spangled Banner, Op. 23.
Following this beautiful service of reflection a reception will be held
in Hawks Hall. All are welcome to attend. Come, share with us the
beauty of this traditional service.
Evensong or Evening Prayer is a traditional Anglican service which
is celebrated in the late afternoon or evening. It is commonly known
as Evensong when most of the service is sung. For generations,
many of our finest church composers have written music for this
traditional service.
The Church of the Ascension is located at 25 East Laurel Avenue in
Sierra Madre. For more information, please call (626) 355-1133 or
visit: www.ascension-sierramadre.com.
