Monrovia Police Blotter

DUARTE SENIORS HAVE A NEW PLACE TO HANG OUT

DUARTE, CA, --Joann Stroup has been a Duarte Senior regular for years but she confessed that she
had never stepped foot on the Senior Center patio until now, the big day of the patio renovation
reveal.

Before the facelift, the Senior Center patio was perhaps not that inviting with its plastic
chairs, sparse landscaping, and little shade. It lacked ambiance. The improvements includ brand
new sturdy and attractive patio furniture with umbrellas, decorative pots and plants and a fountain.
The barbeque area was refurbished, patio walls were given a fresh coat of paint and the old planter
irrigation system was replaced and beautiful new landscaping installed.

With the City operating on a lean budget and with a reduced work force, the transformation
may not have happened at all at this time except for the teamwork between two City departments
and their staffs to get the job done. The Parks and Recreation Department Facilities Maintenance
Division and the Community Development Department’s Field Services Division worked the project
into their regular schedules over a four-month period and kept all the work in-house, for the most
part utilizing equipment and materials on hand.

Seniors, community leaders and City staff who attended the ribbon cutting ceremony were
impressed with the new look.

“We are so happy with our attractive new patio, just in time for the holiday parties,” said
Senior Services Supervisor, Peggy Diamond.

Tip of the Week

THE MONROVIA POLICE DEPARTMENT WANTS YOU TO HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Here are some tips to keep your children safe:

Make sure your costume is easy to see. Light colors or reflective tape are good to use.

Make sure that your costume is short enough so you won’t trip on it.

Carry a flashlight so you can see and people can see you.

Use make-up instead of a mask.

Go with friends and/or parents. Don’t go out alone.

Cross only at corners and never cross the street between parked cars.

Walk only on well-lit streets and stay on the sidewalks.

Wait until you get home to sort, check and eat your candy. Check all your treats and throw
away things that are not wrapped.

Make sure you call the police if you see anything that doesn’t look safe.

A safe Halloween is a happy Halloween!
