LA SALLE’S HOMECOMING COURT
Pasadena, CA – La Salle High School students had the opportunity to experience entertainment both on and off Kohorst Field for
Homecoming Week. The Student Life team worked throughout the month to bring “A Blast from the Past!” to the students and Royal
Court at the rally before the big game on Friday, October 18.
Watching the school come together at the rally further motivated the student body to come watch the Lancer football team compete that
night against Mary Star of the Sea High School. During halftime of the football game, Robert McCreary and his sister Missy McCreary
were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. With their mother and father by their sides, the King and Queen wore their crowns in
front of the crowd and cheered the Lancers on during the second half where the Lancers defeated the Stars 51-20!
The Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Junior Class Council, followed on Saturday night.

GOODEN STUDENTS MAKES A MUSEUM PUMPKIN PATCH
On Thursday, Oct 17th Ms. Keezer’s second grade class from the Gooden School visited the
City’s two museums, Lizzie’s Trail Inn and Richardson House. While there, the students took part
in a craft project that turned the Trail garden in front of Lizzie’s into a pumpkin patch. Each student
created a unique jack o’ lantern that was “planted” around SMHPS’ award winning scarecrow.
The children also toured both museums and the tack shed, learning about early Sierra Madre, and
how some things in the community were different back then, but also how some things are still the
same today.
The pumpkins patch will be on display until Oct 30th in the Museum Garden, upper level. The
address is 167 E. Mira Monte Ave., Sierra Madre. Go north on Mountain Trail and follow it around
REP. SCHIFF
CURRENTLY
ACCEPTING
APPLICATIONS
FOR SERVICE
ACADEMY
NOMINATIONS
Encourages Students to Apply
Burbank, CA – Each year,
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank)
nominates students
from the 28th Congressional
District for appointment to
one of the four United States
service academies which require
a Congressional nomination.
With these appointments,
students are provided a
free college education at a nationally-
recognized academic
institution, while preparing
for an officer’s commission
in our nation’s armed forces.
Nominations are required for
all but the U.S. Coast Guard
Academy, to which appointments
are made on the basis
of an annual nationwide
competition.
All Members of Congress are
able to nominate qualified
high school students for admission
to one of the four service
academies: the Military Academy
at West Point, the Naval
Academy at Annapolis, the Air
Force Academy at Colorado
Springs and the Merchant Marine
Academy at Kings Point.
In order to be considered for an
appointment to a service academy,
an applicant must meet
the eligibility requirements
established by law and be
nominated by an authorized
person, including Members of
the House of Representatives,
Members of the United States
Senate or the Vice President’s
Office.
“The students that are nominated
to a service academy
compile outstanding resumes
of accomplishment, demonstrating
excellence in academics,
physical fitness and
extracurricular activities,”
said Schiff. “
An applicant for nomination
must meet the following eligibility
requirements as of July
1 of the year of admission to
a service academy: he or she
must be at least 17 years old,
but not have passed their 23rd
birthday, must be a United
States citizen and must be
unmarried, not pregnant
and have no legal obligation
to support children or other
dependents. The deadline
for students interested in applying
for nomination to a
service academy from Cong.
Schiff’s office for the Class of
2018 is November 1, 2013.
For additional information,
call Schiff’s district office at

application.
THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
CARRIE
I have been a huge Stephen
King fan ever since I read the book
Carrie. To me, it was one of the best
horror books ever written. However,
when I watched the original
movie version of the book, I found
myself very disappointed (except for
the prom scene, of course). For this
reason, I was looking forward to see
this remake for quite a while and I
am happy to say that it does not disappoint.
This remake follows the plot of the
book and the original film, focusing
on a poor girl, Carrie (Chloe Grace
Moretz), who is severely bullied at
school and lives with an insane, abusive
mother (Julianne Moore). When she discovers that she has
the ability to control objects with her minds, she takes life into
her own hands and decides to get her revenge.
I liked this remake for three reasons, the first being Chloe Grace
Moretz’s performance, which was amazing. The second was that
the character of Carrie’s mother is developed more. For example,
she shows even more signs of insanity than in the original film,
which made this movie even more interesting. The final reason
is the prom scene. It is done absolutely perfect and the chain of
chaotic events that leads to the explosive conclusion is absolutely
stunning to watch. I would recommend this movie for fans of the
original movie, the book, or someone looking for an interesting
plot, characters, and awesome CGI telekinetic fight scenes.
