SIERRA MADRE RESIDENT WINS 1ST
PLACE IN THE BOB HOPE AIRPORT'S
BANNER DESIGN CONTEST
Chance Woods, sophomore at PHS and resident of Sierra Madre takes 1st place
within PUSD in the annual student banner design contest. Students from Glendale
unified and Burbank Unified also designated 1 winner each, from their district.
The 3 first place winners will share the stage on Bob Hope Airport's tower
for one year. Each will have their "time on the tower" for 3 months. The 3 winning
student designs will be transformed into a 16' x 24' banner and hoisted alofton the tower to be seen by thousands of travelers.
Chance is currently in the Graphic Arts Academy at PHS.
This is the seventh year the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority has
sponsored the Bob Hope Airport Tower Banner Student Art Contest for students
of the respective Unified School Districts in Grades 9 - 12. Each year, the Airport
Authority chooses a different aviation theme for the contest. This year’s theme
was “Skies of Freedom” to coincide with The Skies of Freedom™ Commemorative
Brick Pavilion that is scheduled to open with the airport’s Regional Intermodal
Transportation Center later this year. (Visit www.skiesoffreedom.com for moreinformation about the Skies of Freedom program.) In 2013, the theme was “The
Sky’s the Limit.” In 2012, the theme was “Cleared for Take Off,” and in 2011 and
2010, the artists illustrated “Up and Away,” and “Joy of Flight.”
Each school district determines which submissions are its top three entries. The
arts and culture commission from each respective city then considers the three
entries and makes the final award of the first place entry from its school district
based on the judging criteria set forth in the Authority’s contest rules.
1st Place winner from Burbank High School is Angus Crosby and Daniel Leefrom Crescenta Valley High School won first place for his district.

THREE PUSD SCHOOLS
CHOSEN FOR
PRESTIGIOUS HONOR
ROLL
Hamilton, Roosevelt and Sierra Madre Elementary
Schools Recognized for High Student
Academic Achievement and Closing Achievement
Gaps
The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD)
announced today that Hamilton Elementary
School, Roosevelt Elementary School and Sierra
Madre Elementary School have been selected
by California Business for Education Excellence
(CBEE) to receive the title of 2013 Honor Roll
school. The 2,099 public schools in California
receiving this distinction from the California
business community have demonstrated consistently
high levels of student academic achievement,
improvement in achievement levels over
time and reduction in achievement gaps among
student populations.
“We are proud that these three schools are being
recognized.” “Our teachers and administrators
work tirelessly to keep the focus on high expectations
and student academic achievement
and I am pleased that this dedication is paying
off.”
“Having high standards, effective school leadership,
and staying focused on student academic
achievement has paid off for these Honor Roll
Schools,” said Lee Blitch, CBEE Chairman.
“These schools are an inspiration.”
Over time, CBEE has identified a common set
of success factors in higher performing Honor
Roll schools and districts. These include high
expectations for all students; ongoing collaboration
among teachers to improve practice;
targeted use of data to pinpoint challenges and
monitor progress; continual intervention for
struggling students; and mastery of content
knowledge and pedagogical practices.
The annual Honor Roll award is made possible
with support from numerous businesses
and organizations including State Farm, Macy’s,
Edison International, Wells Fargo, Southern
California Auto Club, Enterprise Rent-A-Car,
the California Business Roundtable, and several
private foundations. Chevron Corporation
provided specific support in the creation of the
STEM Honor Roll. A full list of the Honor Roll
schools can be found at www.cbee.org.
Younger students, kindergarten through
4th grade, can enjoy such outdoor games
as capture the flag, parachute games,
relays, knockout, zookeeper, noodle games,
hockey, soccer, Frisbee golf, potato sack

culture, language, traditions, and customs.
Countries include Mexico, China, Greece,
Italy, Belgium, Japan and more. Students
also learn about kitchen safety, culinary
skills, food preparation and group work
while using math and reasoning skills to
accurately prepare dishes. Each chef will
create a personal Cultural Cookbook, and
a map, flag and fact sheet for the country
we are studying. And each student will also
decorate his or her own chef hat to wear
throughout the class.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
POMPEII
With trailers making this
movie seem as if it does not
have a story, I had extremelylow expectations for ‘Pompeii’.
I thought it would just be anhour and a half of the volcano
exploding and people dyingin the fire. However, when Isat down and watched this
film, I found myself pleasantly
surprised.
After his entire tribe is wipedout by Roman Senator Corvius(Kiefer Sutherland) and hisgeneral, Proculus (Sasha Roiz),
the young Milo (Kit Harington)
becomes a slave and eventuallybecomes a gladiator. He travelsto Pompeii, where his hopesturn to earning his freedom,
when he discovers Cassia (Emily
Browning) and his entire
world is turned upside down.
‘Pompeii’ surprised me with its interesting plot, well written
script, intelligent dialogue, and gorgeous visuals; this is notthe watch-the-CGI-volcano-explode movie I thought it would be.
What really fueled the fires of ‘Pompeii’ was the time that wastaken to make sure this would be a good movie.
Science Center, as well as trips to the Los
Angeles Zoo and Scandia Amusement Park.
For those who want to get a jump start on
academics, classical offerings include math
skills, algebra, language arts, poetry and
short stories, American cultural studies,
writers workshops, science classes and
more.
Arts and crafts such as origami, jewelry
making and ceramics are offered for grades
K – 3. Outdoor fun for various ages includes
water games, basketball, baseball, soccer,
volleyball, flag football, and more. And
students can take as few or as many classes
as they would like, allowing for family
schedule flexibility.
“In keeping with Gooden’s rich tradition
bringing academics and the arts together,
our classes and activities allow each student
the chance to discover or enhance his or her
gifts through academic excellence, musical,
artistic or dramatic ability, and through
sports endeavors,“ Patano said.
