ARCADIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT’S SPECIAL RECOGNITION
LUNCHEON By Joan Schmidt
Recently, I attended the 48th Annual Public Schools
Luncheon sponsored by the Arcadia Masonic Lodge
#278 F & AM. What a great event!
Upon entering the hall, I was mesmerized by
the great Art Exhibit covering ALL THE WALLS,
representing all the schools. Special thanks to PTA
President Suzanna Davis, Art Exhibit Coordinator
Erika Speed and all volunteers involved!
There was great musical entertainment by the
forty member All-Arcadia Elementary Honor Band.
Selections included On Wisconsin, Ode to Joy, Hard
Rock Blues, Las Chiapanecas, Star Wars Theme,

of the Lodge. Mr. Helms told about the history of the Masons and
what they stand for, “You have the ability to succeed…morality
is the key to success…We take good men and make them better
men…a worldwide brotherhood.”
The program concluded with the recognition of the National
Merit Scholarship Awardees. This program is a privately financed
academic competition for recognition and scholarship that began
in 1955. There are one million plus entrants. Approximately 50,000
qualify for recognition. Of these 16,000 are Semifinalists and in
February Finalists number 15,000 in the entire country. Arcadia
High is very proud of its twenty-two finalists: Rohan Anand, Juan

We were given a program with a page designated for each
student. They told their “dream” college, what their field of study
would be, favorite high school memory and who inspired them.
They had great goals and most were grateful to their parents for
their love and support.
It was a wonderful luncheon. At my table was a gentleman from
El Monte whose grandson was playing the trumpet in the band,
Ann Durgerian from the Altadena/Pasadena Soroptimists, and
Catherine Hue, very proud mom of Finalist Evin Zhao who hopes
to attend University of Connecticut! A great day for Arcadia!
