THE JOY OF YOGA 
A BALANCING ACT 
In yoga there are three inherent attributes to nature. There are 3 forces 
that are philosophical concepts of the mind or constitutions of the 
mind. The minds constitution is determined by the exact balance of 
these three forces. They are: Rajas, Tamas and Sattwa. We are a blend. 

Discriminative knowledge is the way to liberation, according to the 
great sage Patanjali. The word for it in Sanskrit is SATTWA which we 
think of as clarity, balance and ease. Sattwa is Luminosity, light and 
tranquil. 

We want to cultivate Sattwa. 

Rajas is dynamic, active, vibrant, agitated, turbulent. It helps us to evolve, to expand and to grow. 
But the way we usually see it throwing off our balance is restlessness, activity and distraction. It can 
even be a little too type A? 

Tamas is darkness, solid, mass, inert, stuck, dense and thick. It is heavy and slow. Tamas does not 
like change. 

So while the mass of our body is heavy - we want it to be light in the world. 

Rajas and Tamas cause Duhka, or suffering. So if your mind is disturbed - add some Rajas. If your 
mind is distracted - add some Tamas. Help it get clear by cultivating the opposite and reach for 
Sattwa. 

Yes, of course we can help you with this in yoga class. We start with the body and work toward 
the mind. The mind should be stable but not stuck. It should be quick but not too aggressive. It 
should be balanced, clear and at ease. Welcome to yoga and yoga psychotherapy. It's all a beautiful

CAN SKIN AGING BE REVERSED?

As the years go by, 
our skin changes. 
We begin to develop 
crow’s feet around 
the eyes, wrinkles 
and then our skin 
sags. I don’t know 
about you but I feel 
young. And if there 
is a way to keep 
looking younger 
than my years, I’m 
interested! 

If we want to help 
our skin look 
younger naturally, 
we need to know 
what is happening 
to our skin as we 

age, independent of any skin damage such as 
over exposure to the sun or smoking. There are a 
couple of changes taking place once we reach 35 
to 40. The very outer protective layer of our skin 
thickens and gets drier. My friends who always 
had oily skin are happy when their skin starts 
drying up. If you are like me and originally had 
normal to dry skin, it stinks! Even my friends 
with oily skin eventually are not happy. At the 
same time, your second layer of skin 

65 were found to have skin close to a 20 to 30 
year old. 

You may be thinking what I was thinking, maybe 
the test participants eat a healthy diet and have 
great genes. Well, the researchers did a second 
study using sedimentary volunteers who were 
65 or older with skin representative of their age. 
They had them exercise moderately, 2 days a 
week for roughly 60 minutes, for three months. 
What the researchers found was that most if not 
all of these participants had skin that looked like 
that of a 20 to 40 year old. OK, I do have to state 
that the researchers used skin that wasn’t expose 
to the elements or so called skin care products. 
They used the skin from the participants bottoms. 

Research shows that we are living longer. The 
question is how do you want to live your last 
20 or so years? Skin is a part of our bodies and 
maintaining its health is part of maintaining our 
overall health. So maybe the fountain of youth is 
available to all of us. Just think of the possibilities 
of eating a healthy diet and getting regular 
physical activity. I know I want to live my last 20 
years the same way I am living today, vibrantly!

McMaster’s University in Ontario, 
Canada found that frequent exercise 
as we are aging will keep or even 
reverse some skin aging. They found 
that people who exercised regularly 
had a thinner outer layer of skin and 
a thicker inner layer. People as old as
