The Mt. Wilson Trail saw a lot of action this past Saturday,
May 24th as over 300 runners participated in the 2014
Mount Wilson Trail Race. It was a successful year with
ideal weather, optimal trail conditions, and a hardworking
team of volunteers. All 317 participants safely completed
the difficult 8.6 mile course—an impressive feat worth
a lifetime of bragging rights. Hundreds of spectators
stood along the sidelines as the official race starter, Gary
Hilliard, fired the start gun. The crowd didn’t have to wait
long for the first runners to come barreling down Baldwin
Avenue a mere hour later. The first place overall male was
James Timphony with a time of 1 hour and 12 seconds
and the first place overall female was Mireya Vargas with
a time of 1 hour and 16 minutes.

The night before the race, families enjoyed the annual
Pasta Feed Dinner in Kersting Court. Stonefire Grill
catered the dinner which included pasta, salad, and
breadsticks. In addition to loading up on carbohydrates,
attendees were able to participate in an opportunity raffle,
learn about trail history through a Sierra Madre Library
docent-led slideshow, purchase souvenirs, and check-
in for both the trail race and the Kids’ Fun Run. Partial
proceeds from the night benefited Sierra Madre Search
and Rescue which provides race day safety support on the
trail.

Fun was had by all on the day of the race. Even those
not racing enjoyed themselves either by cheering on the
sidelines, visiting the vendor booths, or socializing in the
Beer Garden. The annual Kids’ Fun Run, sponsored by
the Sierra Madre Community Foundation, Sierra Madre
Civic Club, and CATZ sports, was a large success with 194
youth participating.

The Community Services Department and Mount Wilson
Trail Race Committee would like to thank the following
sponsors and donors for making the 2014 Mount
Wilson Trail Race such a success: Albertsons, Applebees,
Asics, Barrett & Baum Real Estate, Berkshire Hathaway

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor:
Thanks to a fantastic Mt. Wilson Trail Race Committee, the City of Sierra
Madre, dedicated volunteers and sponsors who helped make last Saturday’s Mt.
Wilson Trail Race such a success. With good cloud cover and a trail excellently
maintained by community volunteers, race conditions were perfect!
The 317 runners who ran the 8.6 grueling miles up to Orchard Camp and back
all came back safely with smiles on their faces. Ahead of them were Pasadena’s
J.J. Timphony, who captured his third MWTR men’s title with a time of 1:01,
and Mireya Vargas, also of Pasadena, the defending MWTR women’s champ
who won again in 1:16.
All participants were cheered on loudly by the friends, family and Sierra Madre
residents, making this a cherished annual community event that promotes
fitness and fun.
Through the pasta dinner, raffle and post-race beer garden, the MWTR
Committee raised over $2,320 for Sierra Madre Search & Rescue, an all-
volunteer organization that made sure the runners were safe on their journey
for the race, while making rescues in the Southern California area year-round.
The 2015 MWTR will be run on Saturday, May 23. It is never too early to start
training!
