THE JOY OF YOGA

Behind all the
classes you take at
Yoga Madre, is a
lineage, a tradition.
Pandit Rajmani
Tigunait, PhD, is a
living embodiment
of this tradition and the Spiritual Head of the
Himalayan Institute.

This month, Yoga Madre is so very honored to
sponsor my teacherÕs teacher, my ÒGrand TeacherÓ,
our beloved ÒPanditjiÓ. From the first moment I
heard him speak, I knew what he said was true, good
and applicable to real life. He is not only brilliant,
but also adorable. The light of his soul shines right
out from his eyes and his teachings help us bring
happiness to our lives.

We hope that you will join us for an amazing
evening with him. Come and be inspired by this
great sage of our time.

IÕll see you there!

Ñ Q: So what exactly is the Yoga Sutra?

Ñ PRT: The Yoga Sutra is a book of yoga
philosophy. It is a book of practice. And it is a
book of self-realization. It was written 2,200

years ago, when a great master named Patanjali
gathered

the best aspects of yoga and delineated, in a step-
by-step fashion, exactly what yoga is and how to
practice it.

Ñ Q: What can modern students learn from the
Yoga Sutra?

Ñ PRT: When you practice the kind of yoga
described in PatanjaliÕs Yoga Sutra, you will
experience what itÕs like to be healthy, happy,
peaceful, confident, and energetic. The literal
meaning of ÒyogaÓ is Òunion,Ó Òintegration,Ó
Òreconnection.Ó But in the context of practice,
yoga is a way of gaining access to your own inner
luminosity and becoming established in your
essential self.

Ñ By studying the Yoga Sutra, you will learn
how to cultivate a clear, calm, and tranquil mind;
how to expand the immense power of your mind;
and how to begin unveiling, layer after layer, the
mysteries of the universe within you and outside
you.

Ñ Q: Why are its teachings so crucial today?

Ñ PRT: Because the human mind is scattered. We
have become negligent about our distractions,
inertia, confusion, doubt, fear, and anger. But
humans have been riding a roller coaster of ups
and downs for thousands of years. The yoga
tradition, which started at least 5,000 years ago
and has continued without interruption, has
recorded all of the problems that humans face,
and the methods and techniques to overcome
those problems. The Yoga Sutra contains the
solutions.

FOODS TO SLEEP ON

 There is nothing
worse than finally
getting into bed after a
long day and realizing
you canÕt sleep. If this
is you, you might want
to look at your diet.
Having these foods
for dinner or as snacks
after dinner may help
you to sleep better and
here is whyÉ

 My first choice
is chickpeas, better
known as garbanzo
beans. These are a
good source of vitamin
B-6 which helps
your body produce
serotonin, a mood booster, and stabilizes your
levels of melatonin, a sleep hormone.

Next, I think of foods rich in magnesium, calcium
or potassium since these minerals are necessary
for relaxation and sleep. The first of these is
bananas, commonly sought after by athletes for
energy or to feed muscles, bananas can also help
you fall asleep. They contain a good amount of
vitamin B-6, magnesium, and potassium. Also
in this category would be kale. This leafy green
vegetable provides you with a healthy dose of
calcium and potassium, both of which can be
sleep-inducing.

Oatmeal is another good choice to help calm
you down and help you get ready for sleep. I know
what you are thinking, oatmeal is for breakfast but
think again. Oatmeal contains magnesium and
potassium, and it soothes the nervous system, all of
which promote sleep.

Getting nutty before bed may be just what you
need. Almonds can be a great light snack before
bed and they are full of magnesium, which helps
your body prepare for sleep and reduce stress. They
also have a good dose of healthy fats and proteins.
To top things off, almonds also contain tryptophan,
which combined with the magnesium aides your
body to be ready for sleep.

So whether itÕs oatmeal with bananas, a dish full
of chick peas for dinner, or a handful of almonds as
a night time snack, there are some food options that
will help you sleep better.
