ALUMNI RETURN TO BOSCO TECH FOR NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK
ROSEMEAD, CA. – February 23, 2014 – National Engineers Week is
an important event on the campus of Don Bosco Technical Institute
(Bosco Tech) because of the school’s focus on the science, math
engineering and technology (STEM) fields. On Thursday, February
19, alumni who are scientists and engineers returned to the school
to talk to current students about the interesting world of engineering
and the many exciting and diverse professional opportunities the
field offers.
Representing such companies as Boeing, Lockheed Martin
and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, several alumni made
presentations ranging from designing the infrastructure for a power
station to sending instructions to the Mars Rover. Students were able
to sit in on the presentations of their choice and ask questions of the
speakers about their companies and positions.
“We’re proud of the professional accomplishments of our alumni,”
said Bosco Tech Principal Xavier Jimenez. “And their willingness to
share what they’ve learned with current students is invaluable. They
offered practical insights while encouraging the young people to
apply themselves and dream big!”
“It was another great opportunity that Bosco Tech offers students,”
said Bosco Tech senior Aidan Calvet, who plans to study materials
engineering at the university level this coming fall. “It gave us all a
chance to see where we’re heading and the many different routes we
can take to get there. It reinforces that you can end up where you
want to be professionally.”
With a 100 percent college acceptance rate, about 64 percent of Bosco
Tech graduates pursue STEM-related majors in their university
studies. Celebrating its sixtieth year, Bosco Tech is an all-male
Catholic high school that combines a rigorous college-preparatory
program with a technology-focused education. The innovative
curriculum allows students to exceed university admission
requirements while completing extensive integrated coursework in
one of several applied science and engineering fields. Visit www.
boscotech.edu for more information.

PASADENA UNIFIED CELEBRATES
NATIONAL ARTS EDUCATION MONTH
Visual and Performing Arts to be Showcased from Across the School District in March
In celebration of National Arts Education Month in March, the Pasadena
Unified School District (PUSD) will be highlighting student creativity
all month long. The festivities kick off with the opening of the No
Boundaries 10 student art exhibition and will also include All-District
Elementary and Secondary Music Festivals and PUSD’s participation in
ArtNight Pasadena. All events are free and open to the public.
No Boundaries is the districtwide exhibition of student visual and
performing art in PUSD. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the
exhibit features more than 400 pieces of two and three dimensional
student artwork representing every school in the district. The title “No
Boundaries” refers to the exhibit’s objective of showcasing student
artwork without limits to the size or media used as well as the unlimited
creative potential of students in PUSD.
The exhibition will be held at 345 S. Lake Avenue, in The Shops on Lake.
The opening reception for No Boundaries takes place Friday, February
27 from 6 p.m.- 9 pm with live student performances and appearances
by the artists.
PUSD is also an official partner of ArtNight Pasadena, which takes place
Friday, March 13. No Boundaries will be a shuttle stop during ArtNight
and student and faculty performances will be offered throughout the
evening.
Music programs will also be trumpeted in March and April. The PUSD
All-District Secondary Music Festivals will be held on March 5th (Choral)
and March 6th (Band & Orchestra). These festivals will bring together
over 1000 students in bands, orchestras and choirs from schools across
the district. Guest conductors from Pasadena City College, Azusa Pacific
University and Pasadena Symphony as well as PUSD staff will conduct
the performances. The music festivals will take place at Pasadena High
School, with the Choral Festival beginning at 7 p.m. on March 5th, and
the Band & Orchestra Festival beginning at 6:30 p.m. on March 6th.
Not to be outdone, PUSD’s younger students will participate in the All-
District Elementary Music Festival Thursday, April 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at
Wilson Middle School. Hundreds of students from elementary schools
across the district will be brought together to perform including an

THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE:
SPONGE OUT OF WATER REVIEW

The first SpongeBob movie did not feel like a typical episode of the
show or even one of the TV specials. The plot had more to it, new
characters, new locations, and new jokes. Those aspects were what set
the SpongeBob movie apart from the TV show and made it feel worthy
of being a movie. However, after seeing the trailer for the sequel, I did
not get a sense of the same grandeur of the first film.
The daily routine of the Krusty Krab is interrupted when Plankton
(Tom Kenny) attacks with one of his strongest weapons yet. However,
as the fight reaches the turning point, the Krabby Patty formula, which
Plankton has fought so long for, disappears and everyone in Bikini
Bottom is left wondering where it went. SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and
his friends must embark on a strange journey to find out where exactly
the formula ended up.
‘Sponge Out of Water’, while visually appealing and having much
more time put into it than a regular episode, relies on the simplistic
formula the writers have created. The movie feels like an episode that
someone decided deserved more screen time and got turned into a
movie. The clever humor and great interactions between the characters
is still there, yet it does not feel complex enough to be a movie. The kids
will be entertained but the adults will be left to wonder why they left
their home to go see a SpongeBob episode in a movie theater.
