STUDENTS AT CAMINO GROVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CELEBRATE
READING AS PARTICIPANTS IN ‘READ THE MOST COAST TO COAST’

By Helen Simmons

Students at Camino Grove Elementary School in Arcadia took part
in a nationwide effort to ‘‘Read the Most Coast to Coast’’ on Friday,
February 27. They joined hundreds of thousands of students across
the country in the reading celebration. The event was sponsored by
Renaissance Learning’s Accelerated Reader program, the nations’
most widely used on-line reading management program for K-12
schools.

To add to the fun at Camino Grove, many students and teachers
came to school dressed as characters from their favorite books and
brought books to school to share with classmates. Donning Pippi
Longstalking attire made complete with wired red braids, school
principal Danae Popovich visited classrooms to read aloud her
favorite Pippi Longstalking book. In expressing her enthusiasm
about the event, Popovich shared, “It was great watching the kids get
excited about reading and taking their AR test. As they finished with
their test, they would watch the counter go up and shout, ‘That is my
book!’”

This year, students nationwide read and passed on-line reading
comprehension tests on an amazing 4,173,153 books that day. All
students who participated were eligible to receive a Certificate of
National Participation.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show

CHAPPIE REVIEW

‘District 9’ caught the world’s attention and launched Neill
Blomkamp’s career; however, ‘Elysium’ did not live up to the general
public’s expectations. ‘Chappie’ hopes to regain some of Blomkamp’s
lost popularity, but can it accomplish the job?
Deon Wilson (Dev Patel) has created a new type of police force:
a robotic kind. They work perfectly and the human police of Johannesburg,
South Africa could not be happier. Vincent Moore (Hugh
Jackman), however, is furious that his human operated robots are
not being used. As Deon begins to work towards the invention of
artificial intelligence, he finds himself on a collision course with a
group of local criminals who seek to use his artificial intelligence for
their own purposes.

‘Chappie’ was a very poorly advertised movie. None of the trailers
showcased the unique and extremely interesting story that the
movie follows. This film also happens to be very quirky, with some
of its oddities turning some people off. For some, ‘Chappie’ is a
mixed bag. For others, it may be amazing or terrible; however, it is
worth taking a chance with and going to see because the story and
Chappie himself are both wonderful.
