Volunteer Services Department On Tuesday, the Sierra Madre City Council held its’ annual Reorganization Meeting and the city council elected members John Capoccia as Mayor and Gene Goss as Mayor Pro Tem. Outgoing Mayor John Harabedian was honored for his work as Mayor by the LA County Board of Supervisors, the State Senate and Assembly and Sierra Madre’s Chamber of Commerce. Harabedian also received a certificate from the City listing the many accomplishments during his term. A partial listing of the council’s achievements under his leadership include the passing of the Building Moratorium, Water Moratorium and Demolition Moratorium and Ordinance. The second reading of Ordinance 1364 - the ‘One Family Residential Zone’ was on the evenings agenda however, after much discussion, a few amendments will be made. Those changes will require the Ordinance to come back to the council for first reading and will be among the first items Mayor Capoccia will preside over. Capoccia and Goss also take over leadership of the council faced with other very serious challenges including managing the city’s budget with declining revenues from the Utility Users Tax decrease, the drought and water quality issues and the 30 million dollar claim against the city regarding the Stonegate (1 Carter) development. Regarding the budget, the city will hold another special council meeting on May 5th. on the budget. There will also be a series of public presentations and community interactive meetings on the budget throughout May and June. Join Kiwanis for a day and come out and enjoy its’ 5th Annual Boot Skootin’ Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The event is a combination membership drive and fundraiser held to support various children’s programs including the Imagine Arts Program for Sierra Madre Elementary School, The Sierra Madre Middle School Builders Club and the Arcadia High School Key Club. An opportunity drawing will also be held to raise funds for the Kiwanis International Project Eliminate which is a worldwide effort to eliminate the threat of maternal/ neo-natal tetanus. The evening will feature a wildly popular Chili Cook- Off—a compettion between local restauranteurs and amateur chefs. Celebrity Food Critic Peter Dills will bestow the Critic’s Choice Award in both categories. In addition, The People’s Choice award will be granted to the crowd favorites, both professional and amateur. Henry Duenas will delight the audience as DJ and provide line dancing instructions for those who want to learn a few new steps! A silent auction will also be held. Don’t miss out on a night you will never forget! A One Day Membership Fee is available for $25 and entitles you to enter to the event, eat all the chili you can, and be a People’s Choice judge, plus much more! Meetings are held on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at noon. Breakfast meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00am. All meetings are held at The Lodge, 33 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. SUPERVISOR ANTONOVICH VISITS SIERRA MADRE Recently, in keeping with what has become an annual event, a special meeting of the Sierra Madre City Council and LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich was held. The full council was preent along with members of Supervisor Antonovich’s staff including Chief of Staff Kathryn Barger whose candidacy for the Board of Supervisors Antonovich recently endorsed. Sierra Madre staff in attendance included City Manager Elaine Aguilar, Assistant City Manager Elisa Cox, Public Works Director Bruce Inman, Public Safety Director/Police Chief Larry Giannone, Police Captain Carlos Islas, Fire Chief Steve Heydorff, Interim Planning and Community Preservation Director Leticia Cardoso, Library Services Director Carolyn Thomas, and Assistant to the City Manager Laura Aguilar. The meeting presented an opportunity for both the City and the Board of Supervisors via Antonovich to share progress reports on matters of common interest. Topics discussed included: Sierra Madre’s City Hall Drought Tolerant Landscape Project; The city’s Water Conservation efforts; An update on Measure “B” funds by both Fire Chief Stephen Heydorff and Cathy Chidester, Director, EMS Agency, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. The Low-Moderate Housing project at 186 E. Highland, the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), and the State Route 710 Project were also reviewed.
