LARGE RAIN TANK PROVIDES SUPPLEMENTALWATER FOR ALTADENA RESIDENTS

Foothill Municipal Water District (Foothill MWDor District) is pleased to report the successfulinstallation of a new rain tank on Altadena
residents Michele Zack and Mark Goldschmidt’s
property. Rainwater harvesting tanks are typicallyused to supplement the water supply for landscapeirrigation. They are substantially larger than rainbarrels and constructed of durable material, such as
reinforced plastic, polyethylene or metal.

The large tank installed by Zack and Goldschmidthas a capacity of 1,550 gallons and will be usedsolely for garden irrigation. It captures runoff from600 square feet of garage roof. After the surpriseprecipitation in May, Foothill MWD estimates thatZack and Goldschmidt captured approximately 700gallons. The property also has several rain barrelsplaced in areas which require a smaller footprint forcapturing rainwater.

“We are excited to store this water and make use
of it throughout the summer,” Michele Zack stated.
“By limiting use of potable water outdoors, we cando our part to help conserve.”

“As drought conditions worsen, we recommendthat our residents take advantage of more rainwaterharvesting opportunities,” said Foothill MWDGeneral Manager Nina Jazmadarian. “Not onlywill storing rainwater help conserve potable water,

but a direct water quality benefit is also achievedby avoiding runoff into our streets and naturalwaterways.” During Australia’s 13-year drought, allresidents were asked to collect rainwater, and all new
construction was mandated to include rainwater
harvesting systems. Cities such as Melbourne cutwater use in half, and these savings continued evenafter the drought ended because people becamemore conscious of how they used water.

Foothill MWD offers rebates for both small
rain barrels and large rain tanks. Current rebates
start at $75 per 50 gallon rain barrel (max 4
barrels per customer) and $0.15 per gallon forlarge rain tanks over 300 gallons (up to $2,000per customer). Residents interested in learningmore about rainwater harvesting with rain barrelsand tanks may visit HYPERLINK “http://www.

ARTS IN ALTADENA

“Altadena has always had an artistic bent, due in
no small part to former residents Jiryar Zorthian,
Charles White, and Western novelist Zane Grey.
Historically rich in the arts as it is, Altadena has
never had a formal art walk like its neighbors in
Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Sierra Madre.
That changed when local artists Mary and Patrick
Gothard, along with Kathleen Swaydan, decided
to start opening their studios twice a year, on the
premise that art seen is much better than art unseen.

After organizing two years ago, OpenStudios Tour Alta/Pasa/Dena has taken off likegangbusters, and not a walking tour any longer.
It’s now a roving tour, encompassing parts ofNorthwest Pasadena as well as artists across of
Altadena, a community of about 42,000 peoplespread across its almost nine mile (give or take)
expanse. Held as a semi-annual affair, OpenStudios holds the art tour in June and December.
With over 50 artists and 27 locations, this is a greatway to see unique creations, and meet the makers!

The tour is coming up on June 6 and 7, with

body of a second woman has not been recovered.
Homicide detective Blue Black Beauvais has several
suspects in Belle Terre Plantation, all belonging toone of the most influential families in Louisiana.
In the midst of this, someone is trying to kill menoff.
