LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I read the article published by the Watchman and the comments 
submitted by The Tattler, John Crawford, and it is extremely 
unfortunate and shameful that these two individuals state things 
that are inaccurate and state things without researching the facts 
and statistics of what is happening in our City, Sierra Madre. If 
they would take the time to look at our budget, revenues and 
expenditures, and study the actual facts and problems that we 
are facing, they would realize what mistakes they are making in 
their inaccurate statements. If we all decided to vote according to 
their wishes, our wonderful City of Sierra Madre would no longer 
exist. There would not be enough money to sustain our City and 
it would eventually be dis-incorporated and we would become an 
unincorporated part of L.A. County. Is that what they want, is that 
what we want? I think the answer would be a resounding no! Let us 
all make an informed and educated decision on how to vote on the 
upcoming UUT measure.

Got 33 cents? The price of a few sticks of gum? Great! Because that’s 
the amount the average Sierra Madre household will be paying more 
per day than it does now if the UUT goes up to 10% - which comes to 
a grand total of a tad less than $10 per month. 

 While there is a great deal of debate about contracting with the 
Sheriff’s Department vs. having our own police force, and about 
how severely the City services and library hours should be cut, I’d 
like you to consider what else is threatened if the UUT measure 
doesn’t pass, namely the wonderful community life we have due 
to “non-essentials”. There’s the Huck Finn Fishing Derby, the 
concerts in the park, the family movies, the Wistaria Festival, the 
Fourth of July, and all those other events that are the beating heart 
of Sierra Madre. Yes, these events are heavily supported by our 
community organizations and a great deal of the work is done 
by our outstanding volunteers, but these events also rely heavily 
on City staff – there are contracts to be written up, legals and 
insurance to pay attention to, permits to be issued, barricades to be 
put up, public safety (police, fire and paramedics) to have in place, 
trash to be carried off. A lack of funds will mean that staff will be 
cut, and that there could be no one to take care of all these things. 
All these events that bring us together, that make us so grateful and 
so proud that we live here, could become just memories, and Sierra 
Madre could become just another boring suburb in the vast sea of 
suburbs in the greater Los Angeles area. 

 Isn’t it worth an extra 33 cents per day to you to be living in a 
community that is a true community – one that has that hometown 
feel which millions around us, those who live in soulless cities, can 
only wistfully dream of? It is amazing what citizens pulling together 
can achieve, but it is also amazing how quickly that which is dear to 
us can slip from our fingers if we let it.

 To save the very heart and soul of our village, vote yes on Measure 
UUT on April 12th.

who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of GERALD 
MEERKREEBS

 A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Michael Meerkreebs 
in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.

 THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Michael Meerkreebs 
be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.

 THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be 
admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in

 THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the 
Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal

mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California 
Probate Code.

 Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a 
creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California 
law.

 YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person 
interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice 
(form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of 
any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for 
Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
