Pasadena, CA – The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) today 
announced the five recipients of the 2016 Teachers of Excellence 
Award, presented annually by the Rotary Club of Pasadena to 
educators who excel in their profession. The 2016 honorees are 
Consuelo Galvez of Marshall Fundamental Secondary School; Natalie 
Palma of Field Elementary School; Laura Palmer of Sierra Madre 
Elementary; Beth Strehl of McKinley School; and Sarah Thalmann of 
Marshall Fundamental. The teachers will be honored at an awards 
ceremony on May 18, 2016.

 “Congratulations to these five exceptional educators who engage 
students and families in the learning process, stay focused on student 
learning, plan purposefully, and work relentlessly so that our students 
reach their full potential,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald. “I 
appreciate the Rotary’s support and recognition of our teachers, 
students, and schools.”

 The Teachers of Excellence is a collaborative program of the Rotary 
Club of Pasadena and PUSD. The Rotary Club invites all schools 
to nominate teachers for this honor, and a selection committee 
composed of principals, UTP, parents, previous winners, and 
Rotarians reviews the entries. The five teachers are awarded $1,500, 
and $500 is presented to each recipient’s school. PUSD’s Teacher of 
the Year is selected from the five Teachers of Excellence.

 Now in its 26th year, the Teachers of Excellence awards program 
fosters excellence in teaching in the Pasadena Unified School District. 
It demonstrates the Pasadena Rotary’s commitment to public schools 
and to exceptional teachers who deserve special recognition.

 The Rotary Club of Pasadena will honor the 2016 Teachers of 
Excellence at a luncheon on May 18, 2016, held at The University 
Club of Pasadena, 175 North Oakland Avenue, Pasadena.

BOSCO TECH OFFERS SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR 

SIXTH THROUGH TWELFTH GRADERS

ROSEMEAD, CA. – April 8, 2016 - Don Bosco Technical Institute 
(Bosco Tech) will offer academic enrichment and review courses, as 
well as sports camps, to boys and girls in sixth to twelfth grade. Six-
week high school courses begin on Monday, June 27, while five-week 
middle school courses begin on Tuesday, July 5, 2016. 

 High school students can earn a full year’s course credit over the 
summer by successfully completing accelerated classes in Geometry, 
Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, while students who wish to recover 
academic credit can choose from a wide range of course offerings. 
Also offered are enrichment classes such as Android Apps Design, 
Beginning Guitar and Drawing/Illustration classes.

 Middle school students can enroll in enrichment classes like Fun 
with Electronics & Computers or build and program their own robot 
in our Robotics class. Students can also participate in a hands-on 
laboratory science workshop, or attend cheerleading camp. Sports 
camps will be offered for baseball, basketball, cross country, football, 
soccer, and tennis beginning June 27. Both the basketball and cross 
country camps are open to students as young as fourth grade.

 The deadline for summer school pre-registration is June 10, 2016. 
Walk-in registration, on a space-available basis, will be conducted 
on Tuesday, June 21, and Wednesday, June 22, in the school library 
from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. Prices vary by class

SIERRA MADRE COMMUNITY NURSERY SCHOOL INVITES 
COMMUNITY TO CARNIVAL IN THE PARK

SIERRA MADRE, California – April 5, 2016 – The local preschool 
Sierra Madre Community Nursery School will host its annual 
Carnival in the Park, 10am to 4pm Saturday, April 30 at Sierra Vista 
Park, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. Admission is free.

 The park will be filled with games and activities for children as well 
as items for adults including a live plant booth, a handmade goods 
shop and a very popular sweets and savory booth stocked with freshly 
baked pies, cookies, breads, jams and more.

 Kids can enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, confetti 
eggs, carnival games, face painting and more. Food and drink will be

PASADENA UNIFIED HOSTS STEM INNOVATION EXPOSITION APRIL 8

Pasadena, CA – The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) hosts 
its third annual K-12 Innovation Exposition Friday, April 8, 2016 at 
5 p.m. at the McKinley School Gymnasium, 325 S. Oak Knoll Ave., 
Pasadena. The Innovation Exposition is much more than a typical 
science fair; it is designed to inspire students to think critically and 
explore their interests and talents in science, technology, engineering, 
and math.

 Students submit projects in six categories: environmental 
innovation, science innovation, science fiction, scientific inquiry, 
creativity with 3D printing, and reverse engineering. Students in 
grades 4-9 can enter their projects in the awards competition.
