HEALTHY REASONS TO
SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET
Most true animal lovers would likely agree that in
this day and age, the responsible thing for an owner
to do is to spay or neuter their pet. It is one way we
can play a part in reducing animal overpopulation
in our society, while in turn helping prevent animal
neglect or abuse.
But there are also many health benefits to having
your kitten or puppy spayed or neutered, and in some
cases it could even prolong the animal’s life. And
there is no doubt that timely and safe sterilization
will typically result in desirable behavioral changes
that will make life easier for you and your furry
four-legged friend.
Cherri Megasko, author of numerous articles
about animals, is a featured contributor for the
Yahoo! Contributor Network. She recently posted
an interesting article on this very subject, entitled
“Health Benefits of Spaying or Neutering Your
Pets”.
In her article, Megasko listed several lesser-
known benefits to having your pet “fixed”, and if
you are like me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to
learn the many ways that spaying and neutering can
help keep your pet healthy and happy!
Benefits of Spaying
One obvious benefit of spaying your female pet is
that she will no longer have heat cycles. For dogs and
cats, this means they will be less likely to stray. Dogs
will no longer have the bloody discharge associated
with coming into heat, and cats will no
longer cry as if in pain, in an attempt to
attract a male.
For both dogs and cats, spaying prior
to their first heat can dramatically reduces
their chance of developing mammary
cancer later in life. In fact, for dogs that are
spayed before their first heat, their risk of
developing mammary cancer goes down
to 0.05%. The risk increases dramatically
with each subsequent heat.
For both dogs and cats, spaying
all but eliminates the development of
uterine infections called pyometras.
These infections can be life-threatening
emergencies for your pet and are very expensive to
treat and cure.
Benefits of Neutering
Both male dogs and cats mark their territories
by urinating on objects. Neutering before this
marking behavior begins can virtually eliminate
this behavior. In cats, neutering also significantly
reduces objectionable urine odor.
Testicular cancer is a valid concern for unaltered
pets. Obviously, neutering completely eliminates
that health threat.
Neutering reduces the instances of prostate issues
and perineal hernias in dogs and can also reduce
aggression levels associated with hormones.
Neutering a pet is generally a faster and simpler
procedure than spaying because the testicles are on
the outside of the body, thus making the surgery
less invasive. Spaying a young, healthy animal can
take as few as seven minutes, or as much as 20 for
an older, fatter animal. The health benefits for both
dogs and cats are greater when the surgery is done
at an early age and can greatly increase the chances
your pet will live a long and healthy life.
Be a responsible pet owner, and have your pet
spayed or neutered at an early age. Not only will you
be doing your part to prevent pet overpopulation,
but it is also a proven way to help keep your pet
healthier and happier, and who doesn’t want that
for their canine or kitty companion?
Google and Facebook Ads
Advertising on line has its advantages. Facebook
and Google both have large audiences and there
are benefits to utilizing both.
Think of Google as the old fashioned Yellow Pages.
It’s your go-to if you are looking for something
specific. For example, your tooth falls out while
you are in Hawaii; you do a Google search for
Hawaii dentists and a list comes up. The dentists
that take advantage of Google Adwords are more
likely to appear at the top of that list. Google is all
about search and catching people at the time they
are looking for something specific. Facebook ads
are all about being part of the content.
Think of Facebook as a prime time media channel
like TV. As the audience hangs out on Facebook
for their entertainment, news and updates, ads
make their way into the flow of content based
on the psychographics of each individual.
Psychograhics are the values, opinions, attitudes,
interests and lifestyle of a target audience. As an
advertiser, you can target people who are newly
engaged, just moved, have a Birthday coming up
and other very specific. Facebook ads are great
for building brand awareness and targeting very
specific audiences.
Facebook ads are more affordable than Google ads
but if you do a bit of both, you will see a difference
in the traffic to your web site and your reach.

REVIEWS:
NIGHT MOVES’ - PENNIED DAYS
By Sean Kayden
The Minneapolis-based group Night Moves triumphantly
return after nearly four years with their sophomore LP,
Pennied Days (Domino Recording Co.). The band’s first
record, 2012 Colored Emotions, was a collection of poppy
70s vibrancy. It was nostaglic yet distinctive. It heavily wore
its influence on its sleeves. On this latest effort, principal
members John Pelant (vocals, guitar) and Micky Alfano
(bass) display a penchant for 70s and 80s rock, but this
isn’t a rehash. This is a record that was in the making for
a few years, changing in every inconceivable direction
possible. The group’s mixture of the two unique eras has
them reimagining those exciting times of yesteryear. Night
Moves continue to recall the likes of Steely Dan, The Band,
and Fleetwood Mac. While these young guys were born
well beyond the time of the abovementioned bands, Pelant
and Alfano showcase a warm and vintage feel to the work
that conjures up the golden days of 70’s rock. Much more
than a nostalgic knockoff, the duo has ripened since their
last endeavor. Deeper sensibilities, profound appreciation
for their influential storytellers, and particularly leaping
forward within their own musicianship, Night Moves’
sound penetrates the soul and reinvigorates the body. They
are onto something magical with Pennied Days.
Night Moves’ - Pennied Days
Artist: Night Moves
Album: Pennied Days
Label: Domino Recording Co.
Release Date: March 25th, 2016
The opening track “Carl Sagan” is instantly ageless as it
is resuscitated through the pair’s graceful songcraft and
Pelant’s excellent vocal abilities. It’s a rather bouncy track.
Innocent and youthful, Pelant appears to possess an iconic
voice that resembles those of the past. “Hiding In The
Melody” conjures up rich and bountiful sounds that touch
upon 70s rock. The melodies are something off an Eagles’
record. The band vacillates between synth-y material and
folk-y rock. No matter which way they are headed, beauty
is to be discovered. “Staurolite Stroll” shines through the
haziness and density. The classic rock inspired jam conveys
indelible jangly guitar riffs and pleasurable sounds. As with
many of the jams here, it will bring you back to another
time and place in life. Maybe even think about the house
you once grew up in and the vivid imagery that entails. The
songs here speak about finding yourself amidst the chaos
and confusion of where to start, where to turn, or where
you may just end up. The record consists of nine tracks
that feel very united and cohesive. “Alabama” is from the
same cloth belonging to the likes of Queen. From the vocals
and musical structure, Night Moves is once again in good
company as far as comparisons go. However, they aren’t a
band merely trying to repeat the past. The music from that
time period just speaks to them and these are the results.
Call it paying homage, but Night Moves are on fire with
Pennied Days.
“Kind Luck” is somber tune that paints the portrait of
a broken relationship. It may not be as grand as the other
jams here, but fits perfectly in the context of the theme
they’re setting out to accomplish. “Only To Live In Your
Memories” is chilling with its reverb, Fleetwood Mac-like
arrangements, and reflective storytelling. For Pennied
Days, Pelant channeled both his disenchantment and his
discreet resolution into a set of striking, melodious songs
whose luminous surface conceals an internal darkness.
It’s clear the band has surpassed the efforts of their first
album by leaps and bounds. However, it’s not really even
about that. The focus should be on how the melancholy
yet spiritually inspiring Pennied Days reaches out to not
only their/this generation, but also those of previous ones.
It unfolds in many layers, kind of like life. While Night
Moves members still have a lot of living left in them, their
latest work is modern yet vintage, youthful yet mature, and
great no matter which decade you grew up in.
Key Tracks: “Carl Sagan,” “Hiding In The Melody,”
“Staurolite Stroll,” “Only Live In Your Memories”

LOOKING FOR A BEST FRIEND?
Doug
Doug is a white and brown 5 year old
terrier mix weighing about 10 pounds.
Doug came to the shelter as a stray dog
found in San Gabriel. He had some
extensive dental work, but is now
feeling more comfortable and ready
for his forever home.
Doug is a very friendly boy, social
with both people and other dogs.
He enjoys meeting new friends and
introduces himself very politely to
a new group of acquaintances. He
likes attention and is happy to receive
pets and cuddles. Doug also has an
independent side and enjoys some
freedom to move around, rather than
being held. He is great at playing
“fetch” and will bring toys back to play
“tug-o-war” with his human playmates. He will go from
person to person to share his game with each one. Doug
is easy to walk and handle on leash, staying by the side of
his handler as though he has had some prior experience
or training with walking before.
Doug is a “talker” and makes interesting little noises
when he is trying to communicate. It is like his own
unique language. Why don’t you come meet Doug to
find out what he has to say to you? He will probably
tell you that he’d love to go home with
you.
His adoption fee is $130 and
includes neuter surgery, vaccinations,
microchip and a free wellness exam at
a participating veterinarian. Feel free
to call us at (626) 286-1159 for more
information on Doug. He currently
resides at the San Gabriel Valley
Humane Society located at 851 E.

too. Meet Joey (A4930942),
a bashful 10-month-old
chocolate and tan male
Manchester Terrier mix puppy
who was found in West Covina
and brought to the Baldwin
Park Animal Care Center
on March 22nd. Weighing 8
pounds, this tiny puppy is a bit
overwhelmed in the big and
scary shelter environment. He
is timid and shy, but warms up
once he finds himself in gentle,
loving arms. This boy is very deserving of someone to
love him. With a quiet, loving adoptive home and a
happier environment, Joey is bound to blossom into
the fun-loving puppy he is meant to be. He will benefit
from all of the puppy training basics as he grows into
an adult. Joey also gets along well with his kennel mate.
With Joey being so young and shy, he may even benefit
from being around a confident older dog to show him
the ropes. Joey will thrive as an indoor companion in
a loving household. To watch a video of Joey, please

FAMILY MATTERS By Marc Garlett
FINANCIAL MYTHS
ABOUT GETTING A
DIVORCE
If your marriage is on the rocks, one of your
many worries is probably the impact divorce will
have on your financial life. I can support you to
gain an understanding of the financial impact of
a divorce with a thorough analysis of your assets,
but first read these three widespread myths of the
financial impact of divorce.
My Money Is My Money, and Your Money Is
Your Money
Some people believe that if they keep the money
they earn in separately titled bank accounts, it is
“their money”, but this may or may not be true
Whether your money is “your” money in the
context of divorce depends on state law, how
the money was earned, whether it was inherited
and ultimately whether it determined to be
community property or not.
After the Divorce, Both Parties Will Enjoy the
Same Standard of Living
When there are plenty of assets to go around,
both parties are able to enjoy the same or similar
standard of living they did before the divorce.
However, many American families do not own
adequate assets to allow this to happen. Therefore,
although divorce settlements usually include
“standard of living” as a factor to be considered in
spousal and child support, the economic realities
are that it costs more to support two households
than it does to support one. As such, it is often
the case where both parties take a step back in
their standard of living after a divorce.
A Nonworking Spouse Will Get Alimony for
Life
While it is usually true that nonworking spouses
will receive some amount of alimony, the time
period is often limited to that necessary to allow
the person to get back on his or her feet. This type
of alimony, known as spousal support, is defined
by state law.
Unless the marriage was very long and one
of the spouses is not working, it is unlikely that
permanent spousal support will be awarded.
Usually, a judge will award temporary or
transitional alimony to allow a nonworking
spouse to obtain a job or an education with
which he or she can become self-supporting. In
short, spousal support cannot and should not be
relied upon forever.
If you need to prepare for the financial impact
of divorce, becoming educated about the issues
specific to your particular assets is the first step.
Don’t be afraid to get support.
