Boston Court Announces 
Fall Music Series Line-Up

 Boston Court Performing Arts Center will present a Fall Music 
Series, with a dozen concerts featuring established and emerging 
musicians from a variety of genres: classical, world, traditional 
folk, experimental, jazz and some that defy categorization. Four of 
the concerts are in conjunction with Piano Spheres. The concerts 
are curated by Artistic Director for Music, Mark Saltzman.

 This fall will feature six concerts by renowned musicians from 
across Los Angeles and the globe: Jennifer Leitham Trio (October 
20), Blake Pouliot (October 21), Piano Spheres founding member 
Susan Svr.ek (October 27), The New Zimro Ensemble with Neil 
Brostoff (October 28), L.A. Jewish Symphony Chamber Players 
with Noreen Green (October 29) and wild Up: WORK with Matt 
Cook, Percussionist (November 4).

 Boston Court will also launch a six-concert Emerging Artists 
Series, featuring up-and-coming artists, each of whom is paired 
with a mentor to help them develop and refine their solo program.

 Three are Piano Spheres Satellite Artists -- James Rushford 
(October 5), Jeannette Louise Yaryan, (October 19), and Milen 
Kirov (October 26). The three others are David Childs, Baritone 
(October 8), Catherine Leech, Mezzo-Soprano (October 22) and 
Graycen Gardner, Soprano (October 29).

 The Fall Music Series begins with the Jennifer Leitham Trio 
on October 20. The left-handed virtuoso has played bass with 
the likes of Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, k.d. lang and countless other 
musical legends. Blake Pouliot performs the following day, 
October 21 and offers international and award-winning classical 
violin performance to an intimate house. 

 Piano Spheres founding member Susan Svr.ek is known for her 
wide-ranging repertoire, will perform the Messiaen masterpiece, 
“Quartet for the End of Time” on October 27. 

 The Fall Music Series continues the New Zimro Ensemble 
with Neil Brostoff, performing Polish-Jewish chamber music 
of this and last century on October 28; and the L.A. Jewish 
Symphony Chamber Players with Noreen Green, making their 
Pasadena debut with “Klassics to Klezmer” on October 29. The 
Fall Music Series concludes November 4 with the indescribable, 
experimental, classical, and unforgettable wild Up: Work, 
featuring a solo performance by Matt Cook, a founding member 
of the LA Percussion Quartet.

 Fall Music Series tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, and 
$20 for full-time students. Emerging Artist Series performances 
are free to students and $10 for the public. Fees may apply. Tickets,

Governor Signs Bill Protecting 
Acute Mental Health Services

Governor Brown Signs Bill Protecting Acute Mental Health 
Services

 A Senate mental health bill, by Senator Anthony Portantino, was 
signed and chaptered into law Wednesday by Governor Brown. 
SB 565 requires a mental health facility, prior to a certification 
review hearing, to make reasonable attempts to notify family 
members or any other person designated by the patient of the 
exact time and place of the hearing at least 36 hours prior to the 
certification review hearing. 

 “Having had personal experience with this issue I strongly 
believe that it is vital we improve patient care and possibly save 
lives by enacting a modest and reasonable notice requirement. 
Encouraging a reasonable attempt to contact and include a family 
member or designated person’s comments during the evaluation 
process allows doctors and health care professionals to be better 
equipped to make evaluations in the best interest of their patients. 
Having a time certain for such an evaluation allows the family 
member or designated persons time to be at the hearing and the 
opportunity to add information germane to that evaluation,” 
stated Portantino.

 Portantino became aware of barriers placed between family 
members and a loved one in treatment when his brother 
was placed on three short-term holds but was then released. 
Ultimately he took his own life.

 “I was quite concerned that I could not find out when the 
evaluation hearings were taking place and I could not share my 
feelings about his desires. There needed to be some formal way 
for loved ones to share their concerns and I am very grateful 
to Governor Brown for sharing this concern. Hopefully, the 
implementation of SB 565 will have a positive benefit for patient 
mental health care,” concluded Portantino.

 SB 565 received support from the California Council of 
Community Behavioral Health Agencies, Disability Rights 
California, NAMI California, National Association of Social 
Workers–CA, Pacific Clinics, and the Professional Fiduciary 
Association of California.

 

 A special evening of 
painting on canvas Friday, 
Sept. 22, from 5 to 7:30 
p.m. at the Pasadena Senior 
Center, 85 E. Holly St., will 
be open to members and 
non-members.

 After a 5 p.m. wine and 
cheese reception, staff from 
Color Me Mine will guide 
everyone through the step-
by-step process of painting 
artworks on canvas to take 
home. No skill level is 
required and no experience 
is necessary.

 The cost, including all 
materials, is only $25 for 
members and $30 for non-
members of the Pasadena 
Senior Center. Friends 
are encouraged to sign up 
together at the Welcome 
Desk.

'All Things Apple' Class At 
Pasadena Senior Center

 

 The new features in iOS 11 
will be the focus of a five-
week “All Things Apple” class 
for members of the Pasadena 
Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., 
Thursdays, to Sept. 28, from 4 
to 5:30 p.m.

 Designed for anyone thinking 
of purchasing an Apple device 
or anyone who has one and isn’t 
sure how to use it efficiently, 
the class will be taught by 
David Whitby, a technology 
productivity consultant.

 Whitby will cover what iOS 
devices are, their most popular 
uses for iPods, iPhones, iPads 
and Apple watches, how to 
navigate interfaces like a pro, 
take care of the devices and 
which apps are recommended.

 Weekly handouts and PDFs 
with live links will be provided 
along the way, and everyone’s 
questions will be answered.
