AROUND SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

THE MARCH TOWN COUNCIL MEETING AT
PAMELA PARK: CERTS PRESENTATION, LASD, CHP
UPDATES AND MUCH MORE

By Joan Schmidt

 At the meeting, LA County
Sheriff’s Captain Jacob
announced she will be promoted
to Commander and leaving
Temple Station. She had praise
for the Town Council and
their continued work with
the community and LASD to
improve quality of life in their
areas. She revealed Dave Flores
will be promoted to Captain and
be assigned as Commander of
Temple Station. Lt. Flores had
been assigned to Temple Station
twice before and was one of
our original area deputies who
worked hard to improve the
area.

 Deputy Nelson gave an
extensive update on continued
residential/burglaries, car thefts,
and residents’ complaints over
parked cars, parked mobile
homes, shrubs blocking
views, serious safety issues on
Jeffries pertaining to traffic,
and pedestrians not using
crosswalks. Deputy Nelson said
it takes a long time to do legal
residential abatements. Public
works is considering Stop Signs
on California Ave and sidewalks
for California and Goodall;
speed bumps were denied.

 Council Member Linda Sells
mentioned MANY complaints
about Longden/Peck left traffic
signal resulting in cars backup
to Mayflower. Three residents
spoke of a traffic issue on Jeffries-
three accidents in six months.
Shannon from Arcadia handed
out photos of blighted areas and
Deputy Nelson explained it is a
Code Enforcement issue.

Arcadia PD Mike Vercillo,
could not attend but sent a
memo reiterating increase of
residential/car burglaries and
gave residents safety tips, be
on the lookout for unfamiliar
cars, join Neighborhood Watch,
install home security system.

 CHP Officer John
Watkins stated he was VERY
IMPRESSED with Deputy
Nelson and her reports-and
had high praise for the Town
Council and how the meeting
was conducted. During the
meeting, and afterwards, Officer
Watkins answered questions and
spoke with residents.

 Pamela Park Esmeralda
Fuentes gave an excellent report
on all activities. She mentioned
the building will be extended;
and both buildings will have
new air conditioners. Vice
Chair Terrence Williams asked
about the computers; they will
be updated. Chair Dave Hall
presented Pamela Park with the
CERT Emergency Kit.

 Live Oak/Duarte Libraries
gave updates on many fun
upcoming activities for ALL
Ages.

 Chair Dave Hall and Council
Member Linda Sells explained
the wonderful CERT Program.
(VERY SPECIAL THANKS to
All Nations Church, Monrovia
for use of their facilities for this
program) It was very interesting
and there was so much they
learned. In a catastrophic
emergency, the police and
fire will NOT be able to help
residents. Residents need 72
hours of food. But they learned
much more -how to turn off
gas and water. Do you have the
tools to do so? Do you know
how to use a fire distinguisher?
In less than ONE minute are
you able to evaluate people’s
medical condition? Mrs. Sells
said they saw videos, hands-on-
so much. Mr. Hall said the Town
Council will offer another CERT
program again for residents and
for those already certified to
be Cert teachers. EVERYONE
should take this program. Even
if you aen’t going to be certified,
you need to be prepared!

FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY
BILL PASSES FIRST LEGISLATIVE HURDLE

Sacramento, CA – Today, Senator Anthony J.
Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) presented

SB 24 to the Senate Elections Committee. The
Bill amends the Economic Interest Disclosures in
the Political Reform Act of 1974. SB 24 passed the
Senate Elections and Constitutional Amendments
Committee with a unanimous vote.

The bill amends economic interest disclosures
by adjusting the dollar amounts for investments,
interests in real property, and income. Public
officials are required to disclose this information
when filing their yearly Statement of Economic
Interest (SEI). Specifically, the bill expands the
reporting thresholds elected officials need to
disclose.

“Due to inflation and economic changes,
the current dollar thresholds are not adequately
serving the purpose for which the Political Reform
Act of 1974 was established. It is imperative that
elected officials provide the public with the proper
financial transparency and accountability they
deserve,” stated Portantino.

SB 24 is scheduled to be heard next in the Senate
Appropriations Committee. It is supported by
good government watchdogs including Common
Cause and the California Newspaper Publishers
Association.
