There is always something exciting and
unexpected on Opening Day, always December
26th at Santa Anita Park and this year was no
different. A huge crowd-over 40,000 came out
and were not disappointed. There was something
for everyone-plush horses for the kids, gift cards
for adults and calendars for all-Thank you Mathis
Brothers!
My favorite race, the $300,000 La Brea Stakes
Grade I- saw Unique Bella pull ahead of Paradise
Woods. Unique Bella was ridden by Mike Smith
and Paradise Woods, by Flavien Pratt. These two
awesome fillies had met in the Breeders Cup,
when Paradise Woods upset Unique Bella-she is
one beautiful huge horse. (Of course I was secretly
cheering for Princess Karen-my personal favorite!)
Flavian Pratt won the first race on River Boyne,
trained by Jeff Mullins. Rafael Bejarano had two
wins- Kanthaka and Spanish Hombre.
Kent Desormeaux’s two wins were on Red
Lightning, and on Bowies Hero in the $200,000
Mathis Brothers Mile Grade. Bowies Hero is
trained by Phil D’Amato-Congrats to Phil and his
great staff.
In the $300,000 San Antonio Stakes, ageless wonder
Gary Stevens won on Great Expectations, trained by
Peter Eurton. Congrats to Peter and his staff on this
great win. I’d also like to give a plug for his daughter
Brittany, a top-notch commentator/interviewer
for TVG and truly one of the most gracious and
unaffected people I have met.
Javier Castellano, a great jockey has come from the
East Coast to hang his tack at Santa Anita and won
on Californiagoldrush, from Neil Drysdale’s barn.
Lastly VERY BIG CONGRATS to Drayden Van
Dyke, for his win on City of Light. (Pat was cheering
in Heaven) If I go down to the Paddock Area, I pass
the bench where the late Pat Morris-“Pat the Hat”
sat and get teary-eyed. Among her favorites were
Joe Talamo, Drayden Van Dyke and at the end-
Flavien Pratt. Every time one of them wins, I think
of Pat, probably cheering up in Heaven-they all
were so kind to her.

Pamela Park Director Sam Estrada and Fifth
District Supervisor Kathryn Barger made sure
local children had a great holiday and then some
at the Park. First there was the delicious Christmas
Dinner, followed by Santa’s arrival and toy giveaway!
500 children received toys and went home
very happy.
A week later was the Winter Wonderland
sponsored by Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn
Barger. This event included refreshments and
many raffle prizes, but of course the best part
was the SNOW! First there was the large area of
snow and many kids of all ages were having great
fun-snowball fights. There also was a big hill of
snow and kids got to ride down the hill. When we
walked to the side, we saw stacks of hay on which
the snow was stacked-that’s how they made the
snow hills!
We brought our grandson Jacob, and saw fellow
Council Member Terrence Williams with his son.
Also on hand were Kevin Paris , Probation Officer
at Pamela Park who has facilitated an Afterschool
Program and Parenting Classes as well as other
programs. Area Deputies Nelson and Sanders also
stopped by. A great time was had by all. Thank you
Supervisor Barger, Sam Estrada and Pamela Park
Staff for such a great event.
A GREAT OPENING DAY AT
THE GREAT RACE PLACE!
