6 Mountain View News Saturday, January 5, 2019 ARCADIA POLICE BLOTTER ARCADIA HAPPENINGS For the period of Sunday, December 23rd, through Saturday, December 29th, the Police Department responded to 832 calls for service, of which 95 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period. Sunday, December 23: Shortly before 4:05 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of Winnie Way regarding a suspicious male seen opening mail boxes. Officers located the suspect and, during a consensual search, discovered he was in possession of burglary tools. The 42-year-old male from Pasadena was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At approximately 11:23 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1100 block of West Duarte Road regarding a vehicle burglary report. The victim reported their rear passenger window was smashed and their diaper bag and contents were stolen sometime during the previous evening. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located. Monday, December 24: Just after 9:39 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of Warren Way regarding a package theft report. Surveillance footage captured a lone suspect stealing the victim’s packages on December 22nd at 1:17 p.m. The suspect is described as a male, possibly Hispanic, between 20 and 40-years-old, with short black hair, clean shaven, seen wearing dark clothing. The investigation is ongoing. At approximately 11:08 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of West Woodruff Avenue regarding a burglary report. An investigation revealed the residence was burglarized while it was tented for fumigation. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located. Tuesday, December 25: Around 12:20 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of West Palm Drive regarding a battery report. The officer discovered a husband pushed his wife to the ground and punched her during a dispute. The suspect, a 42-year-old male from Arcadia, was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Just before 9:18 a.m., an officer responded to Re- Planet, 1101 West Huntington Drive, regarding a burglary report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) cut a pad lock to the exterior door and ransacked the recycling center. The loss is unknown at the time of this report. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located. Wednesday, December 26: At about 1:47 p.m., an officer responded Macy’s, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. Loss prevention witnessed the suspect steal $690.00 worth of merchandise. Upon contacting the suspect, the officer discovered he was a 16-year- old juvenile from Duarte and was in possession of tobacco. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Shortly after 5:32 p.m., an officer responded to Bath and Body Works, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. An investigation revealed the suspect stole more than $1,300.00 worth of merchandise from four different stores within the mall. The 30-year-old female from Baldwin Park was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Thursday, December 27: Before 8:05 a.m., an officer responded to the 600 block of Fano Street regarding a stolen vehicle report. The victim stated her 2000 Chevrolet truck was stolen from her residence sometime during the previous night. A records check revealed the vehicle had been stolen, involved in a collision, and subsequently stored by the California Highway Patrol. The investigation is ongoing. Around 10:22 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1400 block of South Eighth Avenue regarding a fraud report. The reporting party discovered a mailed check was stolen, altered, and issued to “Julian Salazar” for $800.00. The investigation is ongoing. Friday, December 28: At about 6:36 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 500 block of Fairview Avenue regarding a suspicious person. The officer located the subject and, during a consensual search, discovered he was in possession of burglary tools. He was later identified as the suspect in a residential burglary. The 36-year-old male from Pomona was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Just before 8:28 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 00 block of West Wistaria Avenue regarding an audible alarm activation. The officer discovered the unknown suspect(s) smashed a rear sliding glass door and fled the scene once the alarm activated. The investigation is ongoing. Saturday, December 29: Shortly after 4:56 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of East Camino Real Avenue regarding the activation of an audible alarm. While searching the home, officers located the suspect hiding in a closet. The 28-year-old male transient from Hacienda Heights was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At approximately 8:17 p.m., an officer responded to the 99 Cent Store, 140 East Duarte Road, regarding an intoxicated subject yelling at customers. The officer located the 28-year-old male from Monrovia and determined he was unable to care for himself. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. CITY OF ARCADIA SENIOR SERVICES BINGO! Arcadia Senior Services is having a fun-filled BINGO event on Friday, January 11, 2019 from 10am to 1pm. It will take place at the Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive, Arcadia. Cost is $10 and includes a 10 pack of BINGO cards, and a lite lunch during intermission. Alta Vista called to report she was the victim of a phone scam. She received a phone call from an unknown phone number and the person on the other end claimed to be her grandson. The caller told her he needed money, which she sent via gift cards. The victim later learned the subject on the phone was not her grandson. Traffic Collision December 27 at 6:15 p.m., a vehicle collision was reported in the 800 block of E. Foothill. From a stop, one motorist moved forward and rear-ended the stopped vehicle in front of them. Information was exchanged and the motorist at fault was issued a citation. Shoplifting / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested December 27 at 9:02 p.m., an employee of a business in the 500 block of W. Huntington reported an adult female subject had taken clothes into the fitting room, concealed them, and then left the store without paying for the merchandise. Officers arrived on scene and detained the subject outside the store. The merchandise was returned and the subject was arrested for shoplifting. She was also found to be in possession of a pipe that had been used to smoke methamphetamine. She was arrested and taken into custody. Injury Traffic Collision December 27 at 9:17 p.m., an officer responded to the report of a traffic collision in the 1500 block of S. Mountain. Both vehicles had been stopped for a red light, when the motorist in the back rolled forward and bumped the vehicle in front. A passenger in the front vehicle complained of neck pain and was transported to a nearby hospital. Warrant / Possession of Methamphetamine – Suspect Arrested December 28 at 1:54 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the 300 block of S. Myrtle when he saw a male subject he recognized from previous contacts. A computer check revealed the subject had a warrant for his arrest, so he was detained. During a search incident to arrest, the subject was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken into custody. Grand Theft December 28 at 3:11 p.m., a grand theft was reported in the 1600 block of S. Mountain. The victim parked his truck in a business parking lot and went inside the business. When he returned, he discovered several tools had been taken from the bed of his truck. Investigation continuing. Burglary December 28 at 3:14 p.m., the manager of a business in the 2100 block of S. Myrtle reported that several storage units had been broken into and burglarized. The loss is still being determined. Investigation continuing. Vehicle Burglary December 28 at 5:33 p.m., a resident in the 700 block of N. Canyon called to report his locked vehicle had been broken into while it was parked on the street. One of the windows was smashed and his wallet was taken. Investigation continuing. Non-Injury Traffic Collision December 29 at 12:42 a.m., an officer responded to the report of two motorists that had collided into one another in the 700 block of S. Monterey. Both drivers exchanged insurance and license information. The driver at fault was issued a citation. Public Intoxication – Suspect Arrested December 29 at 12:58 a.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 500 block of S. Myrtle regarding a female subject in the bar that was heavily intoxicated, smoking in the bar and was refusing to pay her bill. Officers contacted the subject and found she was too intoxicated to care for her own safety. She was arrested and held for a sobering period after she paid her bill. Fire Assist / Code Enforcement Response / Warrants – Suspects Arrested December 29 at 9:08 a.m., several callers reported smoke coming from a building in the 800 block of S. Myrtle. Monrovia Fire Department and officers responded. The fire was coming from a make-shift fire pit inside a wheel barrow that was sitting on a piece of carpet on the property. As officers were arriving, two subjects started walking away from the property quickly. They were detained and, after further investigation, arrested for warrants and possession of smoking paraphernalia. There were several other subjects hanging out on the property and sleeping in tents. Once on the property, officers observed spliced electrical wires laying on the ground that were coming from a power source and were next to a pool of water on the ground. Code Enforcement responded to the location and the entire property was red-tagged and deemed unsafe to occupy. Edison also responded and shut off the power to the property. The investigation is continuing. Indecent Exposure / Possession of Methamphetamine – Suspect Arrested December 29 at 7:07 p.m., a guest at a motel in the 1100 block of E. Huntington called police to report a male subject loitering and exposing himself in the motel parking lot. Officers responded and contacted the subject. He was detained and also found to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was arrested for indecent exposure and possession of a controlled substance. Violation of Restraining Order December 29 at 8:24 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of W. Cherry reported her ex-girlfriend was at her home in violation of a restraining order. Officers responded to the home, but the subject was gone. The resident reported the subject has violated the order several times since it was obtained a few weeks prior. This investigation is continuing. Non-Injury Traffic Collision December 29 at 8:28 p.m., a traffic collision was reported involving two motorists that had just collided in the 1500 block of S. Myrtle. Officers responded to investigate. One of the vehicles needed to be towed and the other was driven away. The driver who was found to be at fault was issued a citation. In honor of Martin Luther King Day, the Monrovia Historical Museum will be hosting a program for on Monrovia’s own Robert Kennard, founder of the oldest African-American architecture firm in Los Angeles. The event entitled “Robert Kennard – Architect and Mentor” will be presented by three individuals: Jerome Robinson, a USC graduate student, who wrote his master’s thesis on Kennard; Gail Kennard, Kennard’s daughter, and President of the Kennard Design Group; and Ralph Walker, KGEM newscaster. The speakers will talk about Kennard’s childhood in Monrovia and his struggle to find his first architecture job. A World War II and Korean War veteran, Kennard attended USC’s School of Architecture on the GI Bill. In 1957, he founded the Kennard Design Group, which provided architecture and planning services, and overcame struggles to become one of the largest and oldest African-American architectural firms west of the Mississippi River. The event will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at 1 p.m. at the Monrovia Historical Museum, 742 E. Lemon Ave., Monrovia. Admission is free. View more information about this event. As Christmas wraps up, we wanted to share a quick note to let everyone in Monrovia know that Athens Services will be recycling your Christmas trees through January 12! To participate in the program, simply place your used Christmas tree curbside on your regular trash collection day. Of course, if you could please remove all ornaments, tinsel, plastic bags, nails, lights, and plastic/metal stands, it would be much appreciated! Also, flocked trees and trees coated with fire retardant will most certainly be accepted. VOLUNTEER FOR THE 2019 HOMELESS COUNT, JANUARY 22, 2019 Interested in volunteering during the annual Homeless Count on January 22, 2019? The City of Duarte, in partnership with the City of Irwindale and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, will conduct its annual Homeless Count starting at 8:00 pm in the Duarte Community Center. The Cities of Duarte and Irwindale participate in this count annually as one way to comprehensively identify and address homelessness in their communities. Volunteers will receive training on site the day of the count, and all materials including food and beverage will be provided.
