Historic Mater Dolorosa is at risk.
Dear Neighbors,
For nearly 100 years, the Passionists have welcomed the people
of Sierra Madre to our home at Mater Dolorosa Passionist
Retreat Center. The community has attended our retreats and
the programs at our facility, and most recently in response to
the pandemic, we worked with the City to use our kitchens
for a food ministry that delivers meals to the elderly and those
in need.
I am saddened to learn of a ballot initiative petition being
circulated by some residents in Sierra Madre. These residents
believe they can stop new homes from being built by unjustly
restricting Mater Dolorosa’s property rights, which would
negatively impact the future of our ministries. Whatever their
intentions may be, that is what their initiative actually does. It
changes City law and makes our retreat facilities become “nonconforming
uses.” The proposed initiative would make it
nearly impossible to ensure our property can serve future
generations.
Please help us stop this injustice to Mater Dolorosa and the
people we serve. Please do not sign the ballot initiative petition.
Sincerely,
Fr. Mike Higgins C.P.
