PUBLIC SAFETY
The Chef Knows By Peter Dills
THINK LOCAL SHOP LOCALLY
It’s time to give the small retailer some love and
affection. Fred and Lewy Fedial have owned Gerlach’s
Liquor store in Pasadena for many years. I
think when I was a student at nearby Blair High
School is when they took over. These guys truly
know their wines. Recently I talked to owner Fred
on how they buy wines for their limited space
and how they can compete with the big box boys.
Fred told me straight out they can’t compete, but
where else can you go where the owners have
gone to over 500 wine tastings and their knowledge
of wines is available on a day to day basis?
I asked Fred to give me a stand-out good value
wine. I was told that when they do find a wine
that they can personally recommend they simply
buy more of it so they can pass the savings on to
their customers.
Fred Suggested the Josh Cellars Cabernet, at around $15, he says it drinks like
a wine twice the price, Fred enjoys the black cherry taste and the medium body.
Great Value!
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most widely recognized red wine
grape varieties. It is grown in nearly every major wine-producing country
among a diverse spectrum of climates from Canada's Okanagan Valley to Lebanon's
Beqaa Valley where it found new homes in places like California's Santa
Cruz Mountains, Napa Valley, and Sonoma. Its popularity is often attributed to
its ease of cultivation—the grapes have thick skins and the vines are hardy and
naturally low-yielding, budding late to avoid frost and other dangers.
Dills Score: 89
Each week I will give you my Dills Score. Starting with a base of 50 points, I
have added points for value - 8 points for color, 8 points for aroma or “nose”,
8 points for taste, 7 points for finish, and 8 points for my overall impression,
which includes my value rating.

NATIONAL 988 SUICIDE
&
CRISIS LIFELINE
Nationwide, people who are experiencing a mental health crisis and in
need of immediate help are now able to dial or text 988 and receive assistance
through the new Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number.
A new 988 Call Center, operated by Didi Hirsch, is now taking calls coming
into the 988 hotline in Los Angeles County. Trained operators are
available to triage callers to receive the appropriate services, including
suicide crisis counseling over the phone and mental health de-escalation
counseling over the phone. In addition, they will also triage callers to determine
when dispatching a mobile crisis team is appropriate and, in rare
cases, connection to law enforcement when safety is of concern.
