Symphony’s Cherished
Holiday Concert Returns

 The Pasadena Symphony’s
annual Holiday Candlelight
concert returns to All Saints
Church on Saturday, December
16, 2023 with performances at
4:00 pm & 7:00 pm. Pasadena’s
most sought-after event of the
season has become a cherished
community tradition and sells
out quickly. The architecturally
exquisite and acoustically
sonorous All Saints Church,
Pasadena’s equivalent of a
European cathedral, provides
the perfect setting to immerse
yourself in a holiday wonderland
among an array of hand bells
and choruses, with Pasadena’s
premiere orchestra.

 Artistic Partner Jenny Wong
returns to lead the orchestra and
returning favorites LA Bronze
Handbell Ensemble, the Los
Angeles Children’s Chorus, the
Donald Brinegar Singers and
JPL Chorus. Currently Associate
Director of the Los Angeles
Master Chorale, Wong was also
recently appointed as Chorus
Director of the San Francisco
Symphony. Internationally
acclaimed singer, songwriter
and recording artist Jamal
Moore will take center stage
to sing timeless favorites
including O Holy Night and
The Christmas Song. A regular
collaborator with Beyoncé,
Moore has performed at
Coachella, the Kobe & Gianna
Bryant Memorial service and
on Disney’s The Lion King
soundtrack, and has toured
globally with Kanye West and
the Backstreet Boys. Audiences
will also enjoy music from The
Nutcracker, plus My Favorite
Things, We Need a Little
Christmas, Hallelujah! and
more, sure to warm their hearts
with holiday cheer.

 Formed in 1928, the Pasadena
Symphony and POPS is an
ensemble of Hollywood’s most
talented, sought after musicians.
With extensive credits in the
film, television, recording and
orchestral industries, the artists
of Pasadena Symphony and
POPS are the most heard in the
world.

 The Pasadena Symphony
and POPS performs in two
of the most extraordinary
venues in the United States:
Ambassador Auditorium,
known as the Carnegie Hall of
the West, and the luxuriant Los
Angeles Arboretum & Botanic
Garden. The multi-platinum-
selling, two-time Emmy and
five-time Grammy Award-
nominated entertainer dubbed
“The Ambassador of the Great
American Songbook,” Michael
Feinstein, leads the POPS as
Principal Pops Conductor,
succeeding Marvin Hamlisch.

 Fully-reserved seating
is available to purchase
throughout the lavish All Saints
Church, specially fitted with
festive floral and decorations, all
under the glow of candlelight.
Tickets to Holiday Candlelight
are limited and close to selling

Safe Clean Water Program

When it rains, stormwater washes bacteria, trash, and other
pollutants into our rivers, lakes and ocean, harming people and
aquatic life. The Safe Clean Water Program helps keep pollution
out of our water by funding stormwater capture projects and
supporting essential municipal programs for pollution prevention.
Special Planning Commission Meeting

The public is invited to a free
reception for an exhibition of
watercolor and mixed media
artworks today from 3 p.m.
to 5 p.m. at the Pasadena
Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St.
The artists are students ages
50 and older, from beginners
to advanced, in art classes at
the center.

 Awards will be presented
in recognition of excellence,
and many of the artworks
will be for sale. Hand-
painted, original greeting
cards also will be offered
for a donation to the
Pasadena Senior Center.
Purchase of artworks is not
required to attend the event.
Complimentary wine, cheese
and other refreshments will
be provided.

 National studies have shown
time and time again that
older adults who participate
in group arts and culture
programs require fewer
doctor visits and prescription
medications, have lower risks
of falling, exhibit higher brain
function and feel happier and
more socially connected.

 “Creative activities for older
adults encourage a sense of
accomplishment, purpose
and growth, all of which
contribute to aging well,
one of the commitments
we have made for 2023 and
moving forward” said Akila
Gibbs, executive director
at the center. “Older adults
don’t have to be Picassos
or Monets – the only thing
that’s required is a desire
to continue learning and
creating.”

 The exhibition will remain
in place for a period of time
after the reception today.

 Membership at the Pasadena
Senior Center and Pasadena
residence are not required to
attend the event, and all ages
are welcome.

Winter art classes are in full
swing at the center and will
be offered again in spring
2024.

 It’s not every day that
members of the public have
the chance to send their
names into deep space
beyond Mars, all the way
to Jupiter and its moon
Europa. But with NASA’s
Europa Clipper, you have
that opportunity: Names will
ride aboard the spacecraft as
it journeys 1.8 billion miles
(2.6 billion kilometers) to
this icy moon, where an
ocean hides beneath a frozen
outer shell. The deadline to
join the mission’s “Message in
a Bottle” campaign is only six
weeks away. The campaign
closes at 9 p.m. Dec. 31.

So far, about 700,000 names
have been submitted. Once
all the names have been
gathered, technicians in the
Microdevices Laboratory
at NASA’s Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Southern
California will use an electron
beam to stencil them onto a
dime-size silicon microchip.
Each line of text is smaller
than 1/1000th the width of a
human hair (75 nanometers).

The chip will be attached to
a metal plate engraved with
the original poem “In Praise
of Mystery,” written by U.S.
Poet Laureate Ada Limón
to celebrate the mission.
Riding on the exterior of the
spacecraft, the poem and
names will be like a message
in a bottle as they make about
50 close flybys of the ocean
world.

The mission will log a half-
billion miles (800 million
kilometers) during these
orbits as the spacecraft’s
payload of science
instruments gathers data on
Europa’s subsurface ocean,
icy crust, and atmosphere to
determine if the moon could
support life.

 Once assembly of Europa
Clipper has been completed
at JPL, the orbiter will be
shipped to NASA’s Kennedy
Space Center in Florida in
preparation for its October
2024 launch.

 To sign, read the poem,
and hear Limón recite
it in an animated video,
go to: go.nasa.gov/
MessageInABottle.
