WALKING SIERRA MADRE

The Social Side by Deanne Davis

6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.

“Think not of the books you’ve bought as a ‘to be read’ pile.
Instead, think of your bookcase as a wine cellar. You collect
books to be read at the right time, the right place, and the right
mood.” Luc van Donkersgoed

And if you’ve gone to the library’s used book sale, you have
wondrous goodies ready to bring you joy at the right time, the
right place and the right mood!

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on
Treasure Island.” Walt Disney

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” Cicero

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The
more that you learn,

the more places you will go.” Dr. Seuss

“There is no friend as loyal as a book.” Ernest Hemingway

“Books are the training weights of the mind.” Epictetus

“I do believe something very magical can happen when you read
a book.” J.K. Rowling

I could go on like that forever as there are almost as many quotes
about books as there are books.

Our library, when John and I were married in 1967 and moved immediately to Sierra Madre, was one of the first places
we went. I couldn’t live without books and, oh joy of joys, the library was full of them! Our children, much to our joy,
are readers, too. The one I want to talk about today is our granddaughter, Nicole. She is the one who works at Sea World
and has been among other things, a whale trainer. Nicole and her husband, Chris, have created between them one of the
most adorable babies ever. Miss Olivia was kissing whales and patting turtles before she could walk. She will be one on
September 30th. The picture this week is, of course, Miss Olivia and her mom.

We have her birthday gift list and you’ll never guess what’s on it. Well, you probably will: Books! I have just ordered the
following for her:

“There’s a Little Ghost in Your Book” BOO! There’s a little ghost floating around in YOUR book! Pull, slide, and
jiggle the pages to help him give his friends a fright in this interactive board book.

“There’s a Unicorn in Your Book” Unicorns love to sing, but this unicorn isn’t singing because a worry gremlin
has crept in!

“There’s an Alien in Your Book” Readers will enjoy trying to launch Alien back up into space--because aliens
don’t belong on Earth...do they?

“There’s a Witch in Your Book” A cute little witch has thrown a magic spell at you!

Our temporary library, as you all know, is down Sierra Madre Blvd. a block or two from the real library, which is having
a facelift, and a lot of other marvelous renovations. It has held up and served us all since it was built in 1955. They have
been on a programming hiatus this month, but will be back doing amazing things in September; for instance: September
is National Library Card Sign-Up Month! We are all waiting anxiously for our beautiful new, totally modern, absolutely
gorgeous library to be open for business.

Last Tuesday, August 26th, we enjoyed our first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the year. It was beyond delicious and we are ready
for more. With a Pumpkin-Cream Cheese Muffin, we are in a state of bliss.

Oh Pumpkin Spice,

You’re awfully nice.

It’s awfully hard,

Not to order you twice.

Take yourself to Starbucks this week and treat yourself to a Pumpkin Spice Latte. Even though it’s hotter than we’d like
it to be, Fall will be arriving in your heart and mind. Have the muffin, too.

There are treasures there! Trust me!
