WALKING SIERRA MADRE
The Social Side by Deanne Davis
6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.
“September 11 was one of our worst days, but it brought out the best
in us. It unified us as a country, showed our charitable instincts, and
reminded us what we stood for and what we stand for.”
Lamar Alexander
“Our enemies made the mistake that America’s enemies always make.
They saw liberty and thought it was weakness.”
President George W. Bush
Last Thursday my calendar showed that I had a doctor appointment
and a date with my Honda dealership to have maintenance.
My car has this cute thing in the dashboard where all your driving
stuff is located, i.e., speedometer, how much gas you have left,
if you’re running hot, etc. This particular thing says: Miles Past
Maintenance…and then each mile you drive fills you with more
guilt as it goes 23 miles, 25 miles, 32 miles until you can’t stand it
anymore and call to make an appointment to have the car examined
under a microscope so nothing will be missed that they can
replace. Oh yeah, and charge you for!
Last Thursday was also the 24th anniversary of the terrorist attacks
on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in
Washington and a field in Pennsylvania. September 11, 2001.
Another day of infamy. 2,977 lives were lost that day. John was
out running and one of the ladies he saw daily on his run route
told him this unbelievable news. I was home reading and when he
burst in the door with this awful news, I turned on our TV in time
to see the World Trade towers crash again and again. Thousands
died and found themselves standing before God’s throne.
People who had intended to live many more years, who had plans for vacations, children to raise, homes to buy, investments
to make, maybe even think about getting closer to God. So much loss, so much heroism. Todd Beamer will live
on in our memories as an amazing hero. We will neverforget his, “Let’s Roll!” as he and others on that plane tried to save
everyone on board.
“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” Sandy Dahl, wife of
Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl/
I came across this quote from Edward Grinnan of Guideposts Magazine:
“I watched the towers collapsing over and over until I went for a walk through the
deserted
streets of my adopted hometown (New York), wondering if the city would ever be
the same. The
country has been through a lot in the years since that day. We have seen war and
disease and
economic hardship. Again and again, I have heard, “We live in uncertain times.”
Humans have
always lived in uncertain times. What could have been more uncertain than the
time when a
Savior was born in a region of the world that was in turmoil and revolt? Yet it was
the birth of
that Savior, at that time, that gave us the greatest certainty of all – the certainty of
eternal life and
of a peace that passes all understanding.”
A remembrance ceremony was held at the Sierra Madre Fire Station on Thursday,
September 11, at 6:30 am. Residents were encouraged to stand as a community to
remember, honor, and never forget. I’m so proud of our community and our Fire
and Police Departments to hold this ceremony each year.
In a world where you can be anything you want to be…be kind.
