WALKING SIERRA MADRE
The Social Side by Deanne Davis
6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.
“Pumpkin spice and everything nice.”
“In every leaf, there’s a whisper of autumn’s magic.”
“Autumn skies and pumpkin pies.”
“Fall is proof that change is beautiful.”
“Autumn leaves and pumpkins, please.”
“The jack-o’lantern follows me with tapered, glowing eyes. His
yellow teeth grin evilly. His cackle I despise. But I shall have the
final laugh when Halloween is through. This pumpkin king I’ll
split in half to make a pie for two.” Richelle E. Goodrich
Fall is officially here. It arrived last Monday. It’s hard to get too
excited about it, though, as it’s still hot and the very thought of
putting on a sweater makes me want to lower the air conditioning
temperature. My house is totally pumpkin-Halloween and even
though it’s still September, I’m loving it!
In other parts of the Country, people are planning trips to look at
the Fall foliage. There are even Fall foliage maps and guidelines for
the best viewing areas all over the internet. For me, Fall starts when
the Creative Arts Group starts offering Make Your Own Scarecrow
kits. These things are free and you can go on their website to enter
the contest. I love this, to see how creative, humorous and inventive
Sierra Madreans can be. I’ll be putting scarecrow pictures up every
week and I hope you enjoy them.
Sometime today, Saturday, get yourself up to 304 No. Sunnyside and get yourself a glass of lemonade from Alex’s Lemonade
Stand. You’ve got plenty of time, it’s 9 am to 4 pm and you’ll be donating to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to support
childhood cancer research. In case you don’t know anything about this, let me fill you in:
The story of Alex’s Lemonade Stand began when Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who had been diagnosed with childhood cancer
(neuroblastoma) as a toddler, decided to host her own front-yard lemonade stand at age 4 to raise money for cancer research.
After raising over $2,000 that first year, her fundraising efforts continued, and by the time of her passing at age 8 in 2004, she
had inspired a global movement and raised over $1 million. Her legacy was then carried on by her family, who established
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) to fund and support pediatric cancer research and provide resources to families.
Alex’s story and dedication spread, inspiring people worldwide to host their own lemonade stands to benefit her cause.
ALSF is now the largest independent childhood cancer charity in the United States. So, take a few minutes, zip up to
Sunnyside, and get some lemonade. You’ll be glad you did.
All our children are now officially, and thankfully, back in school. One of my dearest friends, a brilliant young woman who
is a speech therapist, has a daughter who is now in sixth grade. My friend, Cecilia, has been struggling with her daughter’s
math homework on a daily basis and is finding that this is one of those times that “try men’s (and mother’s) souls.”
“Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.” – Malcolm S. Forbes
“Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your
self-confidence.” – Robert Frost
“It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with
facts...it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.”
Robert Hutchins
What we hope when we send our precious children off to school is that their teacher will love them, accept them as they are
and see the hidden treasure buried inside each one of them. It would be nice if this teacher could awaken a love of reading in
them which will carry them through their lives; teach them spelling and grammar are necessities, not just useless frills; help
them appreciate math and science; be kind to others, use nice words only and aspire to be on Jeopardy! one day. The best
thing we can do for our children is pray. Make their lunch and pray. Give them frosted flakes for breakfast and pray. Take
them for ice cream and pray. Put them to bed, thankfully close the door...and pray. Please God, keep them safe. Please God,
don’t let anyone hurt them. Please God, help me be more patient. Please, God...
And that’s what I’m doing each morning for all the children on my list, including Sadie, who is struggling with sixth grade
math. After spending last Sunday watching and weeping through the Charlie Kirk memorial, I’ve added Erika Kirk to my
prayer list; that God will give her strength, courage, peace and wisdom.
Look for signs of Fall and scarecrows this week, dear friends and neighbors.
