WALKING SIERRA MADRE:

The Social Side by Deanne Davis

“If April showers should come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May.”

Buddy de Sylva
“April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks, ‘Go!’

Christopher Morley“Our spring has come at last with the soft laughter of April suns and shadowof April showers.” Byron Caldwell Smith

April often brings a sense of renewal. Longer days and warmer weather encourage
the idea of planting gardens. Fresh beginnings, like bright green sprouts (daffodils!)
make us want to reflect on growth, both in our gardens and in ourselves. Well,
myself anyway. You’re probably just fine as you are. After the wonderful Easter we
enjoyed last weekend, we might think about some small changes.
I came across this suggestion made by Timothy Hunter Mathews in one of the local
throw-aways: Take this moment to plant the flower of kindness in your own life.
Start with something small. For example, allow yourself space to breathe when
you’re feeling overwhelmed, enraged, frustrated, or when your last nerve is frayed
to a single fragile thread.

Close your eyes and inhale for a count of four.
Hold your breath for a count of four.
Exhale for a count of four.
Repeat until you feel your heartbeat slow.
Going back a couple of weeks, the Wistaria Festival was a huge success. I loved all the pictures here in the Mountain Views News and
the article on Page 13 by Mandy Rodriguez where she says she was taken aback by the sheer volume and friendliness of the people,
and all the things there were to do and see. This was my favorite part, “The ‘glue’ that holds communities together is very visible
during these events and continues to strengthen that hold. What enthralled me the most was getting to see a community share in the
excitement of the annual Wistaria Festival and how connected the community of Sierra Madre is.”

When John and I moved to Sierra Madre in 1967, right after we were married, we found that out right away. People speak to you on
the street! And you know a lot of them. And all our stores and restaurants are delightful and happy to see you.

In the March 28th issue, there was a nice article about the Sierra Madre Playhouse, which immediately made me think about what it
was a few (well, a lot) of years ago: the Bogart Theater. What is noteworthy about this for me is that we took our entire family, who
were all pretty young then, including baby Crissy who was probably about four, to the movies to see “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”
(1970), starring Vincent Price. This was a totally creepy movie and we all enjoyed every minute of it, except Crissy who was not
happy and spent the entire movie under her seat. We have admitted to all our children what terrible parents we were and they have
mostly forgiven us. The Playhouse is a vastly improved and quite beautiful venue now and violinist Martin Chalifour and guitarist
Mak Grgic this coming weekend will be a far classier program than Dr. Phibes. Trust me!

Speaking of movies, we saw a really great one: Project: Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling. This was so good! Here’s a little of the
plotline: Science teacher, Ryland Grace, wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his
memory slowly returns, he soon discovers he must solve the riddle behind a mysterious substance that’s causing the sun to die out.
We were on the edge of our seats the entire time and loved every minute. I highly recommend this movie and, extra nice thing, no
language! What a relief!

One last question: Have you tried Bess yet? The former Corfu is awesome. I gained weight reading the brunch menu! “Come for the
steak and eggs, stay for the Bellini!”

The picture this week is my great granddaughter, Olivia, in her Easter finery with her Easter eggs.

Have a great week, be good to yourself, and in a world where you can be anything you want to be, be kind.

NOTICE OF MULTIPLE PUBLIC HEARINGS
From: The City of Sierra Madre
Subject: MUNICIPAL CODE TEXT AMENDMENT (MCTA 26-02) ADOPTING BY REFERENCE THE CITY OF SIERRA
MADRE OBJECTIVE DESIGN STANDARDS BY ADDING CHAPTER 17.50 (OBJECTIVE DESIGN STANDARDS)
TO TITLE 17 (ZONING) OF THE SIERRA MADRE MUNICIPAL CODE
Applicant: City of Sierra Madre
Project Location: Properties in the City of Sierra Madre,
County of Los Angeles, State of California

The City of Sierra Madre gives notice, pursuant to State of California law, that the Planning Commission and City Council will conduct separate
public hearings at the dates and times listed below to consider a Municipal Code Text Amendment (MCTA 26-02) adding Chapter 17.50 (Objective
Design Standards) to Title 17 (Zoning) of the Sierra Madre Municipal Code and amending various sections therein applicable to multifamily
residential and mixed-use developments. The Planning Commission will be conducting a hearing to provide a recommendation to the CityCouncil.

The purpose of the amendment is to adopt the City of Sierra Madre Objective Design Standards. Several state housing laws, including SB 167,
SB 423, SB 330, SB 4, and AB 2011, strongly incentivize cities to develop objective design standards for multifamily residential uses and mixed
(residential and commercial) uses. By adopting Objective Design Standards, the City of Sierra Madre maintains the ability to impose design
standards on multifamily residential and mixed-use developments. These Objective Design Standards are intended to streamline the approval
process for housing units while maintaining good design.
