LOS ANGELES (CNS) -A Texas woman was sentenced todayin Los Angeles to 21 months behind bars for fraudulently
obtaining more than $28,000 in federal disaster relief moneyby falsely claiming she was a Pasadena resident living in a
property damaged by the Eaton Fire, and for falsely obtaining
more than $54,000 in jobless benefits during the COVID-19
pandemic.

Joyce Turner, 57, of Rosharon, Texas, was also ordered to
pay restitution of $82,555. Turner pleaded guilty in federal
court last year to one count of fraud in connection with major
disaster or emergency benefits and one count of mail fraud.

According to her plea agreement, Turner submitted a
fraudulent disaster benefits application to the Federal
Emergency Management Agency, falsely claiming she lived in
Pasadena in a rental property that had been damaged by the
Eaton Fire. In fact, Turner did not live in California and did
not qualify for the benefits.

FEMA, relying on Turner's false and fraudulent claim, sent
her $28,195 in wildfire disaster relief money, papers filed in
Los Angeles federal court show. Turner further admitted
in her plea agreement that in August 2020 she submitted a
claim for California unemployment insurance falsely claiming
she had been working in California, lost work because of the
COVID-19 pandemic and was entitled to unemployment
insurance benefits, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Following this false and fraudulent claim, California's
Employment Development Department provided Turner with
$54,360 in jobless benefits to which she was not entitled --
providing these benefits through a debit card mailed to Turner
at an address in Los Angeles.

“The biggest lesson I learned from my dad is to support children,
even if they’re doing something that is unorthodox.” Tony Hawk

“I have always had the feeling that I could do anything and my dad
told me I could. I was in college before I found out he might be
wrong.” Ann Richards

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and
yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Billy Graham

Tomorrow is Father’s Day. Yes, you still have time to get your dad
a card and, hopefully, you’re planning to spend a little time…or
a lot of time with him, if you are so fortunate as to still have your
dad with you. My family is so blessed as we had the best example
of how to be a father: my dear John, now residing in heaven. He
was such a great dad, needing only to give an errant child “the
look” to have them shape up. There was one instance when two
of our children, who shall remain nameless at this time, were
behaving badly in church and John had to leave the choir loft where
he had been singing some lofty hymn, and come down to speak to
them. That never happened again.

When you’re thinking of something special to give your dad,
you might consider what John asked for when the children were
adults. He asked for no gifts. In fact, he pleaded for no gifts!
What he wanted, instead was time spent with him. As a result,
he attended air shows with Leah, worked together with son, John,
remodeling a house to be sold, again, hopefully, at a profit. It sold but I don’t recall much profit. He loved to meet anyone for coffee,
lunch or anything at all. These special ‘just us’ times with one or another of our children were golden for him. Today’s picture is one of
my favorites, John having an animated conversation with granddaughter, Jessie, who was still a little girl. She graduated high school last
month. He truly was a shining example of the qualities expressed in 1 Corinthians 13 and presented here as song lyrics, “Love is the
More Excellent Way.”

WALKING SIERRA MADRE:
The Social Side by Deanne Davis
“Love is patient, love is kind, love is humble all of the time,
Not easily angered, enduring the test, so never forget,
Love is the more excellent way.
Love does not envy, does not boast, it is not proud,
It is not rude or selfish, keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil, it rejoices with the truth,
Always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres.
Love never fails.”

No, I’m not remembering him through rose-colored glasses. He really was a great and loving father. Much to my joy, the men in myfamily who are fathers: Big Dave, John, Michael, David, Chris, (Crissy’s husband) Trevor, Chad, Chris (Nicole’s husband) are all the
same kind of fathers. Lovers of God and family. I am so blessed!

One last Father to mention before I close this week, the One we lean on the most:

“Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
They kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever. Amen.”
