SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2015 VOLUME 9 NO. 36 HELP DECORATE SIERRA MADRE FOR HALLOWEEN SIERRA MADRE NEWS BRIEFS COUNCIL TO DISCUSS TRAFFIC CONTROL AND WATER SOURCE DIVERSIFICATION ON SEPTEMBER 8TH MEETING At the first regular meeting since July, the Sierra Madre City Council will undertake two subjects of major concern to residents. The on the agenda is the issue of Traffic Control on Windsor Lane and Sierra Madre’s Water Source Diversification. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 8th at 6:00 pm at City Hall. PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY SEPTEMBER 26TH On Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm local time, communities will team up with law enforcement to host the tenth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held on September 26th in every state except Pennsylvania and Delaware, where the event will take place on September 12. Sierra Madre Police Department will be hosting a collection site after a successful collection last year! If you have any prescription drugs, please be sure to hold on to them and drop them off to us to be safely disposed of! ORGANIC COMPOST GIVEAWAY Athens Services and the City of Sierra Madre host the Compost Giveaway event on Saturday, September 26. The event is from 9:00am-12:00pm at Sierra Vista Park, located at 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. All Sierra Madre residents are eligible to participate and no advanced reservation is necessary. Be sure to bring a sturdy container for the compost. Shovels will be provided to fill your containers. For more information please contact 626.355.7135. Students between the ages of 9-17 are invited to participate in Sierra Madre’s spooktacular Halloween Window Painting Contest. Applications and guidelines will be distributed in private schools and will be found as eflyers on the PUSD website www.peachjar.com the week of September 7 or they can be picked up at the front desk of City Hall and at the Sierra Madre Public Library after that date. Completed applications are due back to City Hall by 5 PM on Thursday, October 8. Teams of up to four students of the same age group can work on a window design. At least one participant must be a Sierra Madre resident. Painting will be done from 2:30-6:00 PM on Friday, October 23, and from 7:30-10:00 AM on Saturday, October 24. Judging will follow and awards will be given by age groups at 12:15 that Saturday. Our local merchants are critical to the success of this event. They support us by allowing us to use their windows for the painting contest, through monetary donations to cover the cost of materials, and through the donation of other items that enhance the experience of the participants. We thank them for their help. This year’s Halloween Window Painting Contest is sponsored and underwritten by the Sierra Madre Civic Club and is free to participants. The Sierra Madre Civic Club is a civic and philanthropic organization. We meet the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 PM in the Hart Park House. You are welcome to join us to find out the fun ways we support special events in Sierra Madre and how we raise money to give back to the community. SMART GARDENING WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 19, 2015 California remains in a serious drought and the average home uses up to 70% of their daily water outdoors. Please join us for a free Smart Gardening class for residential customers of Sierra Madre. The course will cover topics such as sheet mulching, soil building, water-wise plants, landscaping design tips, efficient irrigation and turf removal. The class will be held at the Hart Park House Senior Center, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., on Saturday, September 19th from 10:00am to 11:30am. The class is sponsored by the City of Sierra Madre, the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, the California Department of Water Resources, and the California Urban Water Conservation Council. Garlett, Esq. will be made on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club’s regular luncheon meeting. Whether you have a formal written “bucket list,” or an informal mental checklist of things you want to achieve in your life, there may be something you are missing. Garlett is a family trust attorney and the father of two young children. He founded CaliLaw Professional Corporation, which includes The Law Offices of Marc G. Garlett, located here in Sierra Madre. Schiff announced that his office will distribute a select number of tickets for a live telecast on the West Front Lawn outside of the Capitol during the Pope’s speech to a Joint Session on Congress. His Holiness will address both chambers of Congress on September 24, 2015. Limited tickets for the broadcast will be provided to members of the 28th Congressional District, chosen by raffle, to those that fill out and submit this form. Due to the limited number of tickets our office will distribute, winners may request up to four tickets each. Tickets must be picked up in person and signed for in our Washington D.C. office, in 2411 Rayburn House Office Building, by 6:00pm on Wednesday, September 23rd. Pursuant to House rules tickets may not be redistributed or sold for any reason. Rep. Schiff’s office will be unable to mail tickets to constituents or make any other special arrangements. Travel and accommodations will be at the ticket holders expense. Please note that while a clear line-of- sight cannot be guaranteed for all attending the West Front broadcast, the space provides an opportunity for you to be part of the event. The deadline to enter is Friday, September 11th at 10AM Pacific Time. Those chosen by lottery will be contacted directly with further instructions by the end of the day.
