Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side
by Deanne Davis
REMEMBRANCE
MARY EDNA YULE
October 25, 1920 – August 12, 2015
Mary Yule, a 78 year resident of Sierra Madre,
passed away August 12th from complications
due to a stroke. Mary was born in Akron, Ohio
to Julia and Rudolph Davis (Davidovich). The
oldest daughter, she had five sisters and four
brothers. She was attending high school in
Ohio until 1936 when her mother moved with
Mary, two brothers and her five sisters west to
California, all traveling in a 1931 Buick sedan,
pulling their belongings in a small trailer.
Along the way they had to sell the trailer to
get money to continue the trip. After relying
on the kindness of strangers and sleeping
beside the road, they arrived in Pasadena with
35 cents to their names. Mary and her oldest
siblings found work within days of arriving in
California. The family moved to Sierra Madre
in 1937.
Mary began her career with California
Water and Telephone in 1941 as an operator
in the office at Highland and Baldwin Avenues
and remained with the telephone company for
31 years, retiring in 1972. In 1947 she married
John J. Yule of Sierra Madre and they remained
together for 52 years until his passing in 1999.
A devout Christian, she was a member of
the Church of the Nazarene, and before being
slowed by strokes, the Congregational Church
of Sierra Madre.
Mary loved to walk and could be seen all
about town power walking long before the term
became popular. Always thinking of others,
ready to help anyone in need, she was known by
many in town for her Poppy Seed and Rum
cakes.
She is survived by sons John and Dennis
of Sierra Madre, daughter Valerie Chasin of
Malibu, her brother James Davis of Granite
Bay and sisters Katherine Jenkins of Sierra
Madre and Jean Lewis of Monrovia, three
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside service on Thursday
September 17th at 2:00 p.m. at the Sierra Madre
Pioneer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please
consider donating to Feed the Children and
Operation Smile.
“See,” cries the chorus of admiring preachers, “How
Providence provides for all His creatures!”
“His care,” the gnat said, “even the insects follows:
For us He has provided wrens and swallows.”
Sempen Railey
Yes, and people out walking Sierra Madre early
in the morning. No bears, no deer, just gnats!
Gnats in your nose, eyes and ears,
Did I swallow one?
Aack! One of my greatest fears!
They’re bad this year, friends, but, hopefully,
with a little cooler weather these nasty little guys
will go back where they came from! Mt. Wilson
Trail Race many times winner, Sharon Pevsner,
celebrated a birthday last week and dear friends
decorated her house with TP like you couldn’t
believe. They did the house across the street, too,
so those folks wouldn’t feel left out.
Belong to the Auto Club? Get Westways
Magazine? Be sure to see the lovely article on
Sierra Madre on Pages 32 and 33. The Wistaria
Vine, E. Waldo Ward, T-Neer Tea Room, Bailey
Canyon Trail, and several of our local restaurants
are mentioned. So neat to see this.
Speaking of neat, our own Victor Espinoza,
Triple Crown winning jockey, will be one of the
stars when Dancing With The Stars comes back this
month. Athletes always do really well on DWTS so
we’re pretty sure Victor will be a contender all the
way to the end. As you’ll recall, Victor is a huge
supporter of the children at City of Hope, donating
his winnings from the Belmont Stakes to City of
Hope.
If you haven’t been to the Sierra Madre Playhouse
to see Always Patsy Cline, you need to go. It’s
terrific. Cori Cable Kidder, who plays Patsy Cline,
sounds exactly like her. She sings everything Patsy
Cline made famous: I Fall To Pieces, Walkin’ After
Midnight, Sweet Dreams, Crazy, and a whole lot
more. The story features Patsy and her greatest
fan, Louise (Nikki D’Amico). This musical is fact
based, there really was a Louise and she really
did meet her idol, Patsy Cline, and corresponded
with her for several years before Patsy’s untimely
death. We were surprised and delighted with
how great this show is. Excellent 4-piece band,
and two exceptional artists. The show has been
extended to September 27th, so call Mary at 626-
355-4318 or go to the Playhouse Website: www.
Sierramadreplayhouse.org. I bought my tickets
online. Couldn’t have been easier. Place was sold
out, too! Walked across the street after the show
to Sierra Brigante and had an amazing salad –
Insalata Rustica, featuring radicchio, Belgian
endive, roasted walnuts, apples, bacon, tomatoes,
Gorgonzola and their own Caesar dressing. Zach
had made Sangria, too, which was awfully good.
Some of us even had two!
Creative Arts Group is having a Flea Market this
Saturday, September 5th. I’m thinkin’ a little early
Christmas shopping?
Walking up in the Canyon a few days ago, we
noticed a plaque on a wall: “The Site of Charley’s
Cabin.” We’ve walked past this plaque and this
cabin about five thousand times and never really
noticed it. Well, Charles Chantry purchased that
property in 1915 and built a small cabin there. The
current building replaces the original one-story
cabin which was constructed of horizontal, square-
hewn logs with a half-dovetail notching system.
Charles Chantry came west seeking gold, arrived
in Sierra Madre around 1905 and rented burros
to children visiting Carter’s Camp. There’s more
to Charley’s story and you ought to take a walk up
there yourself and take a look. Charley’s Cabin is
where Woodland Drive meets Sturtevant.
School is really happening all over the place. St.
Rita’s is filled with joyful little people and our Texas
kindergartener and second grader are already well
into week two. Someone sent me these teacher
quotes that made me smile....
“A great teacher is the perfect combination of Mr.
Rogers and Rambo!”
“Every child in your class is someone’s whole
world.”
“The object of education is to prepare the young to
educate themselves throughout their lives.”

“Tablespoon of Love, Tablespoon of Laughter” is
available there…
An excellent wedding gift and teachers would love
it, too!
KATHY MARY MARZ
July 23,1942-August 13, 2015
By Joan Schmidt
Kathy Marz was a beautiful lady inside and
out. As long as I can remember she has been an
integral part of our choir-the 10:30 Mass and
our Religious Education Program. She also
was responsible for the beautiful flowers and
decorations in our Church every Sunday and
on special Holy Days. I would be in awe of the
banners, the flowers-the candles- who designed
all these beautiful settings? It was Kathy.
She also taught Religious Education for
years and especially helped in the two-year
Confirmation Preparatory Program. She was so
good at what she did, she was chosen to be the
“sponsor” for several Confirmation students.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband
Mark and her parents. She leaves behind her four
children, Dianne, Melissa, Chris and Michael and
so many friends who deeply love her and will miss
her greatly.
Her services were beautiful and began with
the Rosary-Joyful Mysteries because Kathy had
a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. It was
concelebrated by Father Eugene, Father Michael,
and Father Ed Benioff. There was an awesome
combined choir-representing ALL the Masses,
and the music was uplifting and beautiful. Her
son Chris wrote a song and sang it, accompanied
by guitar. Her daughter Dianne read and
Melissa sang, Ave Maria. All four children were
gift-bearers.
Eulogies were by her children, Francine
Moore, (10:30 Choir Director) and Gary Cooper,
Bereavement Group. All spoke of her selflessness
and putting all others first, sacrifices Kathy made
for friends and family. She was “best mom”, and
her children are “eternally grateful for the endless
love, prayers and support. It is incredible how
many lives our Mama touched.” RIP dear friend
to all, Kathy.
SIERRA MADRE POLICE BLOTTER
During the week of Sunday, August 23rd, to
Sunday, August 30th, the Sierra Madre Police
Department responded to approximately 292 calls
for service.
Wednesday, August 26th
At 8:29 pm, Sierra Madre Police responded to
the 400 block of Fairview Avenue regarding a
stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, the victim informed
Officers that he had parked and secured his vehicle
in his driveway at around 6:30 pm. At around 7:15
pm he returned to his driveway to discover his
vehicle was missing. The victim stated his car was
paid off and he was in possession of all the keys.
The victim’s vehicle is described as a GRAY 2013
Subaru Impreza. This case has been forwarded to
the Detective Bureau.
Thursday, August 27th
At 11:14 am, Sierra Madre Police responded to
the 200 block of Windwood Lane regarding a
theft report. Officers were informed by the victim
that at around 11 am, while working in her home
office, she noticed a newer model hatchback
vehicle stop in front of her house. A White male,
6’02” tall, average build, aged between 25-35 years,
with short brown hair, exited the passenger side
of the vehicle and approached her front door. The
suspect walked to the front porch then walked
back and got into the vehicle. The victim thought
the suspect may have been delivering a package
that she had been waiting on, so she went to her
porch and discovered an open box with nothing
inside. The empty box was addressed to an address
in Pasadena. Shortly after this incident a theft of
a package was reported from the 400 block of
East Orange Grove and the empty box left on that
porch was addressed to the first victim. This case
has been forwarded to the Detective Bureau.
Sunday, August 30th
At 2:21 am, Sierra Madre Police responded to
the 70 block of East Highland Avenue regarding
a male subject passed out in a vehicle that was
blocking the driveway. Officers approached the
vehicle and discovered a male asleep in the driver’s
seat with the seat reclined all the way back. When
Officers woke up the
male and asked him if he knew where he was,
the man stated “North Hollywood.” Officers
were able to distinguish a heavy odor of alcohol
emitting from the man’s breath. He informed
Officers that he had four beers 3-4 hours prior.
Officers determined the man was intoxicated to
a level where he was unable to care for his safety.
Officers arrested the man for public intoxication
and transported him to Pasadena Jail for
detoxification.
