Bicycle Giveaway Brings
Opportunity to Students

Tournament Starts 2024 Royal Court Search

 Supervisor Kathryn Barger, a
former Pasadena City College
alumni, spoke at a brief
ceremony Monday at PCC
that preceded a special bicycle
giveaway for students who are
or were former foster youth.

 “Today is about providing
youth with a tool that equips
them to continue their
education, pursue a career,
and achieve their dreams,” said
Supervisor Barger. “The foster
youth here have determination
and are juggling a variety of
challenges. I’m proud to support
their journey towards a brighter
future.”

 Supervisor Barger commended
One Bicycle Foundation, the
non-profit organization that
provided the twenty-four
new bicycles at no cost to the
PCC foster youth students.
One Bicycle Foundation’s
Co-Founder and President,
Shawnt Bazikian – also a PCC
alumni – was on hand and
spoke during the ceremony.
“We are very happy to partner
with Supervisor Barger and
PCC today,” said Mr. Bazikian.
“One Bicycle Foundation’s
mission has always been clear:
empower youth. The bicycles
we provide serve as a source of
encouragement. We want the
foster youth that we’re helping
today to know they’re on the
right track.”

 Dr. Jose Gomez, PCC
Superintendent and President,
spoke of the importance of
partnering with community
colleges and the opportunities
they offer. “Community colleges
are powerful forces for good,”
Dr. Gomez stated. “They
reach into neighborhoods and
communities, helping elevate
and transform individuals. Our
PCC community is grateful and
thanks everyone who made this
day possible. Together, we can
create a community that cares.”

 Several PCC students milled
about an outdoor patio, where
black bicycles in various sizes
were arranged in a row, along
with safety helmets. One PCC
student, whose first name is
Dulce, shared her appreciation
for the support. “ I take the bus
to school, and this will be very
helpful with my transportation
issues. Even just getting around
in my neighborhood to run
errands or do other day- to-
day activities will be easier now.
Receiving a bike today shows
that people really care.”

Portantino Honored with
Elected Office of the Year

 Senator Anthony Portantino
was honored recently with the
Elected Office of the Year in
Supervisor District 5 by the
Los Angeles County Business
Federation (BizFed) for his
significant contribution in
policy development and
community engagement on
behalf of the local economy.
The Senator received the award
during the organization’s
Business Makes Los Angeles
County Work” Awards at the
Japanese American National
Museum.

“I am honored to receive this
award from BizFed and proud
to support and advocate on
behalf of our local economy,
including small businesses
throughout my district and
LA County,” stated Senator
Portantino. “Small businesses
are critical to the vibrancy of
local economies because they
generate a significant economic
activity and increase local job
opportunities.”

 “We’re honored to recognize
Senator Anthony Portantino
as one of our 2023 Elected
Officials of the Year. The Los
Angeles County business
community is grateful to his
staff for their grassroots, boots-
on-the ground efforts. We know
it takes a dedicated team – and
a sprawling network of partners
– to make headway on tough
issues,” the Los Angeles County
Business Federation said in a
statement.

 The Los Angeles County
Business Federation is a non-
profit grassroots organization
that unites and amplifies the
voice of business. Its members
represent 420,000 employers
with 5 million employees
in Southern California,
representing a broad and diverse
range of business sectors.
BizFed’s membership includes
chambers of commerce, trade
associations, minority business
groups, business improvement
districts, economic development
organizations, educational
institutions, public agencies,
and top companies.

 The online free exhibition,
Frozen Frames: Preserving
Pasadena’s Visual Legacy,
is an on-going four-part
series, bringing artistically
and historically compelling
images out of the deep
freeze and into public view.
The photographs come
from among the more than
200,000 at-risk negatives
that are now cryogenically
preserved as part of the
Museum’s Great History
Freeze project of 2015.

 Curated by PMH Director
of Collections Anuja
Navare, the four-part
Frozen Frames exhibition
is dedicated to the memory
of Dr. Michael Kadin
with generous funding
provided by The Paloheimo
Foundation and the Kadin
family.

 Pasadena Playhouse presents
Amy Brenneman (Judging
Amy, Private Practice, HBO’s
The Leftovers, The Old Man)
as “Bella Lee Baird” and
Anders Keith (Fraiser: Revival)
as “Christopher Dunn” in
the Los Angeles premiere of
Adam Rapp’s thrilling Tony-
nominated drama The Sound
Inside, directed by acclaimed
Los Angeles director Cameron
Watson, from September 6
through October 1.

 The creative team features scenic
design by Tesshi Nakagawa;
costume design by Danyele
E. Thomas; lighting design by
Jared A. Sayeg; sound design by
Jeff Gardner; casting by Ryan
Bernard Tymensky, CSA of RBT
Casting; and stage management
by Alyssa Escalante, with David
S. Franklin serving as assistant
stage manager.

Not everything is as it seems
behind the ivy-covered walls
of Yale, where an unlikely
bond leads to an unthinkable
favor. Writing professor Bella
Baird is looking for answers,
but a fateful encounter with a
mysterious student could lead
to life-changing consequences
for both of them. Nominated
for six Tony Awards, including
Best Play, Pulitzer Prize
finalist Adam Rapp’s haunting
90-minute thriller will leave you
wondering who you can trust
and remind you everyone has
a story — the question is how it
ends.

 Director Cameron Watson
says, “The Sound Inside by
Adam Rapp is one of the
most beautiful, thrilling, and
unexpected plays I have read in
a very long time. You’ve never
seen or experienced anything
like it before. We have assembled
not only the best designers
in Southern California, but
the astounding duo of Amy
Brenneman and Anders Keith to
bring this gripping play to vivid
life on the glorious Pasadena
Playhouse stage.”

 Pasadena Playhouse, the official
State Theater of California and
recipient of the 2023 Regional
Theatre Tony Award, is one of
the most prolific theaters in
the country. The Playhouse has
staged thousands of original
productions since its founding
in 1917 including premieres of
works by Tennessee Williams,
Eugene O’Neill, Suzan Lori
Parks and hundreds more.
For decades, its pioneering
School for Theater Arts was a
training ground for actors and
theatermakers who went on to
make significant contributions
to the entertainment industry.
Under the leadership of
Producing Artistic Director
Danny Feldman since
2016, Pasadena Playhouse’s
productions and community
programs are centered on its
founding idea of being a living
force in its community, making
theater for everyone.
