Schiff to Host Breakfast Roundtable,
Celebrate National Hispanic
Heritage Month
Opportunity to discuss issues related to fair housing and
the Latino community

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced that he will host a
breakfast roundtable meeting with John Trasviña, Assistant
Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),
to discuss issues related to fair housing and the Latino
community. The roundtable will be held on Monday,
September 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Pasadena
City Hall. At the event, Assistant Secretary Trasviña
will provide an update on initiatives his office has been
working on. He will also be seeking input from community
stakeholders on issues facing the local community.
“Homeownership is one of the primary ways for families
to build assets, which is especially true for Latino
households in which a significant percentage of net
worth comes from the equity in a home,” Rep. Schiff said.
“Unfortunately, as the economy struggles to recover, the
number of Latino families who own their own home is
dwindling. I hope the roundtable will provide resources
and information to ensure Latino individuals and families
throughout our community have access to decent, safe
and affordable rental and homeownership opportunities.”
“Housing and the freedom to choose where one’s
family lives are basic needs,” said John Trasviña,
Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal
Opportunity. “Assuring housing in communities, free
from discrimination, with access to good schools, jobs,
transportation, and health care is one of HUD’s major
goals. The Roundtable is an affirmative step to ensure
that the Latino community of Pasadena knows its fair
housing rights and can gain the assistance of HUD when
faced with housing discrimination.”

Chris Shevlin to Receive Inaugural Cathy Hodgkin

Humanitarian Award at SAFYMCA’s Red Envelope Gala, Sept. 29

MONROVIA, CA, September 14, 2010 --- Chris Shevlin
has packed 42 years and more of service into his 23 years in
Monrovia. Count 13 years on the Santa Anita Family YMCA
Board of Directors, 17 years as a member and past president of the
Kiwanis, 7 years on the board of the Volunteer Center, and 5 years
as chairman of the Make A Difference Day and you have a man
constantly in motion and genuinely committed to helping make
Monrovia a better place to live.

For his selfless contributions to the community and
particularly for his continuing dedication to the Santa Anita
Family YMCA, The Y has chosen Shevlin to receive its first annual
Cathy Hotchkin Humanitarian Award. Established this year
to honor the memory of longtime benefactor and supporter of
the SAFYMCA, Cathy Hotchkin, the award will be presented to
Shevlin at the SAFYMCA’s Red Envelope Gala and Chairman’s
Roundtable dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Embassy Suites
in Arcadia. The event celebrates The Y’s commitment to youth
development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Cathy Hotchkin Humanitarian Award honors an
outstanding community member who donates time and resources
to charitable causes, plays an active role in their community, is a
positive advocate for youth and families, and is connected to the
Santa Anita Family YMCA.

“Chris is a tireless advocate for kids in our community and
works to ensure that all kids have the opportunity to develop to
their full potential. Our community is a better place because of
Chris’ philanthropy,” said SAFYMCA Executive Director, Damon
Colaluca.

In addition to his many years of service on the SAFYMCA board,
Shevlin, who was a high school and college basketball official
for 35 years, donates his time to teach basketball referee clinics
at The Y. He is also a strong supporter and volunteer with the
SAFYMCA’s Youth Alliance program, a comprehensive personal
development program that provides at-risk middle school and
high school students with educational guidance, homework help,
counseling, leadership training, and spiritual support. More than
100 community teens and their families participate in the program.

“This is a great place to live. I love it here. I want to do things to make this a better place. You get involved and one thing
leads to another.

One of those things that led to another is responsible for a soon-to-launch official Old Town Walk, an idea that evolved
from Shevlin’s love of walking for exercise, which in turn began through his participation in the Y Partner exercise program.

“I thought, what if we had a walk that encouraged a healthy lifestyle and got more people into downtown and gave Kiwanis
some recognition. The Old Town Walk will have markers for distance and recognition for Kiwanis on all of the posts. It
will start at the fountain at Library Park and include all of downtown,” he said.

In 2007, Chris and his wife, Becky, a Monrovia City Council member, received the Iris Award as “Citizens of the Year,”
from the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce.

“I expect to live the rest of my life in Monrovia and continue to participate in any way I can to make this a great place to
live. Whatever the future brings Monrovia will be a big part of it,” said Shevlin.
