Alverno Cross Country Tested at 10th Annual Don Bosco Invitational

A young Alverno cross country team
debuted at the 10th Annual Don Bosco Tech
Cross Country Invitational held at Santa Fe
Dam on Saturday September 11, 2010. The
team, revitalized with twenty (20) members
that includes five (5) freshmen, fielded
17 runners in the Small School Division
divided between two races, Seniors/Juniors
and Soph/Frosh.

The Invitational marks the start of the fall
cross country season and gives teams the
opportunity to test themselves, take a look
at how their Horizon League opponents
perform and how they compare against
them. Many of this year’s Alverno runners
improved their times over their 2009
performance on the 3 mile course.

Seniors on this year’s team are: Miranda
Akkari, Sahhara Assafiri, Audrey Davy,
Kelly Janzen, Bianca Melkonian and Sascha
Rosemond. Juniors are: Holly Coates, Madi
Daniels-Campos, Andrea Gochez-Wilson
and Sammi Lorey. Sophomores are: Eryn
Blakely, Ashley Haylett, Adrianna Martinez,
Devny Osuna and Nicolette Rodriguez.
Freshmen are: Bella Daniels-Campos,
Reagan Dowd, Jessica Lopez, Victoria
Pintado and Francesca Rueda. The runners
are trained by Head Coach Ken Berry and
Assistant Coach Alex Fanara.

Alverno’s top finishers at this year’s Don
Bosco Tech XC Invitational were Kelly
Janzen who came in 74th out of 145 runners
that finished in the Senior-Junior race with
a time of 24:44 and Eryn Blakely who came
in 7th out of 136 runners that finished in the
Soph-Frosh race with a time of 21:24.

The next test for the Alverno runners
will be at the Bellarmine/Griffith Park
Cross Country Invitational on Saturday,
September 25th.

Horizon League competition gets under
way on Wednesday, September 29th 4:00 PM
at the Rose Bowl, hosted by Holy Family.
The 2009 League standings were very tight.
Alverno came in 3rd place and are looking to
move up in the standings.

Member schools of the Horizon League are:
Alverno High School, Bishop Conaty-Our
Lady of Loretto, Holy Family, Sacred Heart
of Jesus and San Gabriel Mission.

SLICING YOUR TEE SHOTS

I know what runs through your mind every time you walk
up on the tee box. I sure hope those people in the fourth
house on the right are NOT home. I have been very lucky
in my career, I never had to worry about the houses on the
right of the fairway. My mistake has been the houses on the
left side of the fairway!!! That article will come in a couple
of months.

There are a couple of things that you have to do if you are
going to stop the driver from slicing. I know this is going
to break your heart, but you have to stop aiming left. I am
sure you are aware of this but in case you aren't, slicers aim
left. There is a major problem with aiming left-if you don't
SLICE the ball it will go out of bounds on the left side of the
fairway. Do you get it?

I know there is a comfort level in you playing for your slice,
but you have to stop doing that, today. Now here comes
number two. You have to get the clubface to close in the
downswing, BEFORE impact, not after. When you hit
practice shots on the range, you have to continue working
on allowing the toe of the driver to pass the heel before
impact.

Here is a great drill that will help. After you address the golf
ball, lift the clubhead two feet off of the ground and make a
practice swing. It is so much easier releasing the club when
it is in the air versus on the ground. Remember, the toe
rolls open in the backswing, so it has to roll closed in the
downswing.

It will take you a couple of sessions on the range to practice
with the clubhead a couple of feet in the air. Go through
your normal routine and when you are ready to swing the
club back, STOP, lift the head a couple of feet in the air, take
a deep breath and then swing away.

Golfingly yours, Bobby

Bobby's Weekly Pearl: Aim slightly right at address and
then ROLL the toe of the driver in the downswing.

The start of the Soph/Frosh race. Leading the way for Alverno were Eryn
Blakely (left), Jessica Lopez (right).
