“Native Plants for Foothill Gardens”

The San Gabriel Mountains Chapter of the California Native Plant
Society (CNPS) will host its “Native Plants for Foothill Gardens”
annual native plant sale on Saturday, November 13, from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena
Drive, Pasadena, CA 91107.

A variety of California native plants and wildflower seeds will
be available for sale, including many that are hard to find in
most nurseries, and all are appropriate for gardens in the Los
Angeles Basin. Knowledgeable Chapter members will be on
hand to answer questions and offer recommendations, such as
which plants will attract birds or butterflies to your home garden.
Only cash or checks will be accepted at the plant sale, and CNPS
members will receive a discount.

Most residential gardens can be adapted for native plants and
this is an excellent opportunity to buy natives at reasonable
prices. The use of natives in the garden is a good way to adapt
to water restrictions brought about by years of drought and a
growing population. Drought-tolerant native plants will survive
summers on less water than most garden plants. For optimal plant
establishment in Southern California, it is best to plant natives
during the cool, rainy months of fall and winter.

A free native gardening workshop will be held at Eaton Canyon
Nature Center on the following Saturday, November 20, at 3:00
p.m. The Chapter’s website at http://cnps-sgm.org has further
information about the plant sale and the gardening workshop.
CNPS is a statewide non-profit organization of amateurs and
professionals with a common interest in California’s native
plants. The mission of CNPS is to increase understanding and
appreciation of California’s native plants, and to conserve them
and their natural habitats through education, science, horticulture,
and advocacy.

"THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW" Contest

Are you a small business owner who is tired of bureaucratic red
tape? Do you have a common sense idea to cut waste from state
government? Have you thought of a sensible solution to a growing
problem in your community?

Some of the best legislative ideas come from those who have
personally experienced a problem and see a need for reform. So,
if you have an idea for a new law that you’d like me to consider, or
if you believe a certain law is problematic and should be repealed,
I hope you will participate in my 2011 "There Ought To Be A Law"
contest.

I will choose one idea to be included in my 2011 legislative
package. The person who submits the winning idea will be
invited to join me for lunch and will receive a California State
flag that has been flown over the Capitol.

To enter this year’s contest, please visit my website, at www.senate.
ca.gov/huff and fill out the short questionnaire describing your
idea. You can submit the form online or mail it to my Capitol
office by December 3, 2010, and the winner will be announced
in January.

If you have questions, please contact my Capitol office staff at
(916) 651-4029.

Daylight Saving Ends - CAL FIRE
Reminds Californians to Change Your
Clocks, Change Your Batteries

Sacramento – Replacing the batteries in home smoke alarms
should be a common ritual for many people as daylight saving
time comes to an end on Sunday, November 7. CAL FIRE and the
Office of the State Fire Marshal is reminding all Californians that
when the time changes, the batteries in all smoke alarms should
be replaced. If smoke alarms in homes are more than ten years
old, CAL FIRE recommends replacing them as well.

According to a recent survey among more than 1,000 adults
commissioned by the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA), conducted over the phone in September 2010, Americans
continue to have misunderstandings about smoke alarms,
including how many they need in their homes and how often they
should be tested and replaced.

Smoke alarms, when properly installed, give an early audible
warning needed to safely escape from fire. That’s critical because
85 percent of all fire deaths occur in the home, and the majority
occur at night when most people are sleeping. Last year, NFPA
documented 3,420 home fire deaths nationwide.

“By taking the time to replace the battery in your smoke alarm
you help ensure that you have one of the best ways to alert your
family should a fire occur,” said Chief Tonya Hoover, acting state
fire marshal.

CAL FIRE has the following tips on smoke alarms:

• Test smoke alarms once a month.

• Replace batteries in all smoke alarms twice a year.

• Don’t “borrow” or remove batteries from smoke alarms even
temporarily.

• Regularly vacuum or dust smoke alarms to keep them
working properly.

• Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

• Don’t paint over smoke alarms.

• Practice family fire drills so everyone knows what to do if the
smoke alarm goes off.

Sierra Madre Chamber
Mixer on November 16
to Celebrate Pharmacy
Centennial at Best Buy

Paul Mansour, (above) pharmacist and owner of Best Buy
Pharmacy, will host the November Chamber Mixer event at
5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16 at the store, 29 N. Baldwin,
Sierra Madre.

Earlier this fall, Mansour discovered a 1910 date on an old
photo of the pharmacy, confirming that the store has served
Sierra Madre now for at least a century, through several
ownerships. In addition to the mixer, which offers local
business people and residents an opportunity to network
and get to know one another better, the Chamber will host
a ribbon cutting to celebrate the beginning of the second
century of a locally owned pharmacy for Sierra Madre and the
surrounding communities.

Mansour and his family searched the Sierra Madre Library
Archives with librarian Debbie Henderson, and purchased
digital files of historical interior and exterior photos of the
pharmacy from their archive service. The photos have been
enlarged on canvas, and will be displayed at the store for
the Centennial celebration, in addition to enlargements of
historical documents and news articles of the pharmacy’s
history.

Cost to attend the mixer is $7 for Chamber members and $15
for non-members. Please RSVP to the Chamber at 626 355-
5111 or by email to Info@SierraMadreChamber.com
