McKINLEY K-8 SCHOOL ELECTS NEW MASCOT
Students, Staff, and Parents Organize Election
Pasadena, CA – Students at McKinley K-8 School tallied
election results of their own today, when they learned that the
tiger is the school’s new mascot. As voters cast their ballots
yesterday in federal, state and local elections, McKinley
students in grades 1 through 8 also headed to their own polls
to replace the mule as the school’s mascot. “Our students have
been actively advocating for a change of mascot as part of
the implementation of the district’s new strategic plan,” said
Marisa Sarian, principal of McKinley School. “Our school
has been embracing the values and priorities of the District’s
strategic plan. One of the goals is to place a greater emphasis
student and parent engagement through collaboration. Voting
in an election that has a direct impact on students is not only a
lesson on civics, but is a way to help unify the diverse strengths
of our entire school community.” A student essay contest
was organized by parents. Entries were read by a committee
consisting of staff, parents, and one member of McKinley’s
class of 1946. Five finalists were selected: the Condors, the
Dragons, the Mammoths, the Mules, and the Tigers. Eighty-
one percent of McKinley voters cast ballots (Kindergarteners
were exempt).
The tally of votes follows:
Tigers 340
Dragons 237
Condors 138
Mules 72
Mammoths 53
