NEW PLAYGROUND FOR
MEMORIAL PARK
The Sierra Madre City Council and Redevelopment Agency
allocated $75,000 for new playground equipment geared
towards children 2 -5 years old in Memorial Park. Residents
will enjoy a well-designed, accessible and beautiful play
area. It is a wonderful space for kids; bright and colorful,
it encourages the youngsters to run around and play. The
playground equipment features a wave zip slide, an ABC
climbing wall, rock wall and umbrella canopies. The new
playground also incorporates traditional equipment such as
swings (two belt seat swings and two tot seat swings) and a
dragon fly totter, which will appeal to a variety of ages. The
tiny tots have loved the sand pit area which has been kept in
the process of renovating the playground. The installation is
expected to finish this week.
The Sierra Madre City Council and Community Services
Commission invites you to join them for the Memorial
Park Playground Dedication Ceremony. The ceremony will
be held on Thursday, June 30th at 5:00 p.m. in Memorial
Park, located at 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre,
CA 91024. Please contact the Community and Personnel
Services Department for more information at 626-355-
5278.
Miss Palmer’s 3rd Grade Class, 31 talented and creative students, have
published a book! It is called, “Miss Palmer’s Third Grade: Once Upon
A Wayside” and it includes the work of each of the students in her class.
We will publish the book in its’ entirety this summer, with 3-4 stories
each week. The stories will not be edited, well maybe a few spelling corrections.
They are all entertaining and original!
Inspired by the book series they read in class, The Wayside School
Series by Louis Sachar, the children created their own episodes of life at
Wayside. (Hint: Louis Sachar’s Wayside School was supposed to be 30
classrooms, one story high; but by mistake it was built straight up 30
stories. That should give you some insight into the kind of stories you
will read from Ms. Palmer’s 3rd Grade Class!)
A teacher for six years, Ms. Palmer has been at Sierra Madre Elementary
for two years. She was born and reared in Sierra Madre, played
on the SM Girls Softball Team and was a Sierra Madre Rose Princess
in 2000.
This is a series of stories that will enlighten, inspire and keep you laughing
all summer long! S. Henderson/MVNews
MATH by Ava Slocum
“Good morning, boys and girls!” Mr.
Kidswatter’s voice came over the
loudspeaker. As usual, there was a
pause as he waited for the children
to answer him. As usual, nobody did.
“I’d like to announce that if you are
in Ms. Fratic’s class or up, you will be
doing super, ultra, advanced math.
Thank you.”
Mrs. Jewels and her class were
silent. Then Joe broke the silence.
“Who is Mrs. Fratic?”
“She is a very kind teacher whose
class is located five stories below us,”
Mrs. Jewels replied.
Everybody was silent until Maraicia
let out a yelp. “Help”, screamed
Leslie. “Oh no”, Paul said. “But I’m
terrible at math”, screamed Jenny.
Everybody had something to say
from a negative statement to a simple
yelp.
“All right,” said Ms. Jewels, “Let’s get
started.”
Nobody had anything to say. “Now”,
said Ms. Jewels, “If you multiply
12 by 18 then add 515 and then
subtract 100 and divide by 3 and…..,”
she paused. “Please take out your
whiteboards and do that problem.
Oh, and raise your hands when you
are finished, thank you.”
Everybody raised their hands. Not
because they knew the answered, but
because they all had questions. “All
right,” said Ms. Jewels, “let’s move on
to spelling.”
The next day, they had their math
tests. Nobody could do it and in the
end, they all decided to guess. They
all failed
So it went on that way, nobody was
able to do their math work. It hurt
Ms. Jewels feelings to see so many
unhappy faces and hear so many sighs
when it was time for math. First,
she tried making it interesting. “If
there were 20,000 clowns, plus 150
clowns, minus 100 clowns, divided b
50 clowns, how many clowns are there
in all? When that did not work she
tried force. But in the end, nothing
worked.
The next day, Ms. Jewels made an
announcement. “Boys and girls,” she
said, “If Mr. Kidswatter never finds
out that we are not doing our much
too advanced Math, we will not have
to do it.”
“Ooh”, screamed Rondi.
“What fun”, shrieked Allison.
So it came to be that they did not do
their super, ultra, much too advanced
Math.
The End.
YOGURT by Luke O.
It was Pet Day again in Mrs. Jewels
class and John was late for school.
John got his pet frog, Yogurt and
rushed to Wayside School. He had
made it to the 18th story when Yogurt
suddenly jumped and ran.
Yogurt opened a door that no one
had noticed. John dashed after him,
but suddenly the door closed right on
his nose! John cracked his nose, but
he didn’t care.
He opened the door and went in.
That was a mistake he should have
avoided. John paused as he gazed at
Ms. Zarves. He couldn’t believe it.
Ms. Zarves said, “Oh boy a new
student. Please take a seat.”
John sat next to someone and said,
“What’s your name?”
“Ray”, Ray said.
“Who’s that, that and that”, John
asked?
Ray said, “Victoria, Benjamin and
Nick.”
“Benjamin? I think I’ve heard that
name before”, John said. He wondered
a bit then walked up to him. (When
they had their minute break). John
asked, “Is you name Mark Miller?”
“Yes, Mark Miller”, he said.
“Why do we work for eleven hours
straight”, John asked? Mark Miller
shrugged.
“Your break is over”, said Ms. Zarves.
“It’s time for two math tests”
John was finished first with the first
one. Ms. Zarves graded it within a
minute. John knew he wasn’t going to
ace the test, but his grade was still
an A+.
Then John finished the second test,
but he answered all of the questions
wrong. He still got an A+.
After an hour, Ms. Zarves made
them memorize all of the words in the
dictionary. Ten hours later they got
a break. John saw a box. It had a
frog in it. He suddenly remembered
that it was Yogurt and he belonged in
Ms. Jewels class.
He was about to grab him when Ms.
Zarves said, “Don’t even dare. What’s
your name young man”?
“John”, John said.
Ms. Zarves said, “John, is that your
frog”?
“Yes”, John said.
“Then take it and get out of here” ,
Ms. Zarves said.
John smiled and left the room. When
he returned to Mrs. Jewels class, Pet
Day was over, but he was just glad to
be back.
THE NEW HAND GAME
by Candace Karasarkisian
One spring day and all through the
school not a creature was stirring not
even Samy. Ok, enough with the Dr.
Suess act, let us get to the story.
One day in Mrs. Jewels class, Dana
tapped on Shari’s shoulder and Shari
woke up. Dana taught Shari a secret
hand shake. They, they turned it in
to a hand game called “Mailman”.
“Mailman, Mailman, do your duty”,
said Dana and Shari together.
“What kind of song is that”, asked
Rondi?!
“Ou, sick”, said Joy!
“I like it”, replied Joe and Jenny.
So then the whole school started to
play it. Even Mrs. Jewels, Mrs. Gouf,
Miss Zarves, and Miss Nogard!
Mr. Kidswatter’s voice came on the
PA. “Good morning boys and girls”,
said Mr. Kidswatter.
As always, Mr. Kidswatter waited and
listened for the children to say good
morning back. They didn’t say a word.
“I heard that there is a new hand
game and I will make it the official
hand game of Wayhigh School. Oh,
did I say Wayhigh School? I meant
to say Wayside School. Ok, have a
nice day”.
The children were quiet for a while
and they looked at each other. Then,
they all cheered. They all found a
partner and started doing the hand
game. Some people didn’t know how
to do the hand game, so they just
asked Dana and Shari.
That’s how Wayside School got a
new hand game!
