THE RICH VS. THE VIRTUOUS
IT WAS A MURPHY’S LAW KIND OF WEEK
Looking over my
articles written over
the past five and a half
years, I realize that I
have been chronicling
a long-standing
war. It is the battle
between those I call
the virtuous and those I call the rich. I
picture the virtuous as those who think
like me. These folk claim they are not
interested in individual material wealth;
instead they care for the future of all
mankind. Their (our) motto might well be
that if an economic system does not work
satisfactorily for everybody then it doesn’t
work decently for anybody.
The opposite point of view was
asserted yesterday on the Daily Show,
now without John Stewart. An American
rich person asserted that the American
economic system, because of its limited
governmental regulation, was the greatest
economic system ever developed by man.
He explained that in the United States
great profits could be made, no matter the
present economic conditions, provided
that an investor was properly educated
and prepared. In the United States we are
fortunate that there is no autocratic tyrant
siphoning off wealth for his own benefit.
Additionally Americans are forever
fortunate that Socialist do-gooders like
Elizabeth Warren are now powerless to
divert accumulated wealth from those who
manifest the hard-work and creativity to
gain their precious bounty. The Elizabeth
Warrens of the world worry only about
the undeserving poor, the lazy untalented,
mediocre humans that I guess are typical of
99% of the population. The true name of
the game in America is SELFISHNESS. As
Michael Douglas told us in his Academy
Award Winning Performance, “Greed is
Good”
I wonder how many of my vast number
of readers are familiar with the name
Elizabeth Warren. She was the force behind
the creation of the Consumer Protection
Agency and was such a force that the
Republicans prevented our President from
appointing her as Director. Someone else
was appointed and she fooled everyone by
running for and capturing the Senate Seat
from Massachusetts. She is my hoped-
for candidate for President of the United
States in 2016. .
To me Elizabeth Warren is the antidote
to our present debased and cynical society
in which money is the standard of all other
things and the best things will fall to the
share of the worst men. One of my heroes,
Thomas Paine, the author of the pamphlet
Common Sense, highly influential in the
creation of the American Revolution,
wrote in 1776 that this Revolution is the
“Birthday of a new world”. He wrote that
it “is in our power to begin the world over
again,” to establish a government to the
perfectibility of man. I believe Thomas
Jefferson and the contributors to the
Declaration of Independence incorporated
this idea in their guarantees of life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness to ALL
inhabitants of the soon to be created
independent nation.
Today it is fashionable to denigrate the
intentions of our Founding Fathers. How
could they dare to write of universal rights,
liberties, and the pursuit of happiness when
the nation they were creating allowed only
voting rights to a small population of land-
owning adults and prohibited other males,
all females, and all slaves (yes slavery was
a legalized part of the foundation of the
United States) from participating as voters.
In whose interests were the founding
father’s acting—the rich or the virtuous?
The debate still rages as is evidenced
by today’s Supreme Court Ruling which
strikes down key parts of the Voting Rights
Act. It is this very Act that attempted to
remedy the unfairness allowed to exist
from the very founding of our Nation. I
believe Justice Roberts’ decision (I haven’t
seen it) alludes to the fact that there is
no evidence that voter discrimination
continues to exist in the specifically named
mainly Southern States. C’mon now! It is
beyond any doubt that these United States
have increasingly become controlled by
interests not dedicated to the Common
Welfare but rather dedicated to the further
accumulation of their own wealth. The
only real weapon against these controlling
individuals, the Super-super rich, is the
voting power constitutionally guaranteed
to the rest of us. We must try and protect
our rights.
In conclusion, what Elizabeth Warren
represents to me is not just the protection
of certain enumerated rights but rather
she is the projection of the envisioning
of a utopian future that dwells on the
perfection of the self rather than the
protection of economic interests of the
corporate managers. I write this article
somewhat motivated by the advice that I
have received from helpful people who
were concerned about the knee injury that
I described in my last article. There is no
doubt in my mind that people, strangers,
want to be helpful to one another. We care
about each other and our governmental
system should be based upon this
universal caring and assist us in living lives
of contribution rather than accumulation.
I suggest that many of us in our pursuit
of happiness would be better off forfeiting
possessions in exchange for feelings of
brotherhood congruent with our true
natures uncorrupted by the corporate
pitchmen hired by the rich.
I am not what
you would call
a superstitious
person. [Knock
on wood.] I am a
realist in a modified
definition of that word and I usually take
things as they come.
My past week, however, was an
open commentary on “Murphy’s Law.”
Offhand I am not quite sure who come
up with this concept, but they must have
had a week somewhat like my week this
past week.
If I had it within me, I would establish
“Snyder’s Law” which simply stated
means, what can go right will go right.
Then all would be right with the world.
Well, except for those who are left-
handed.
It all started Monday morning when
I had an early morning meeting. I meant
to set my alarm clock for 6 AM but
for some reason I set it for 6 PM and
overslept. Have you ever noticed when
you are 15 minutes late in the morning
the day ends up being 90 minutes late?
Do not ask me how that happens. Ask
Murphy.
In the mail, I got a notice from the
bank that I was overdrawn and they
were charging me an insufficient fund
fee. Well, I was furious. After all, I know
how to add and subtract and I know how
to take care of my bank account. I was
about ready to call them and give them
a piece of my mind when I noticed, how
it happened I will never know, I forgot
to include two checks I had written last
week. I hate when that happens. My
whole checkbook is now screwed up.
I think it might be easier for me just to
close my account and start all over again.
It was Tuesday but I had to go across
town and endure all that traffic. It is not
my favorite place to drive, I will tell you
right now. Just as I turned onto a street,
my engine sputtered a little bit. Then,
much to my chagrin, the engine stopped
completely. I hate when that happens.
I turned the key several times and
then, I do not know why I did it, but I
glanced at the gas gauge and the arrow
was pointing way beyond the E. My gas
tank was about as empty as my bank
account. It is bad to run out of gas, but
the worst thing for me about running out
of gas is calling the Gracious Mistress of
the Parsonage and asking her for help. I
would walk 100 miles not to tell her I am
out of gas.
She always comes and bails me out.
However, for the next six months I am
reminded and reminded and reminded
to put gas in my tank.
Thursday also had its issues. My wife
wanted me to go to the store and pick up
something and for some reason, I cannot
remember it now, I used her car. Maybe
it was because I did not want to run out
of gas!
I got to the store, paid for my purchase,
came out and tried finding my truck. I
walked up and down and my truck was
nowhere in sight. The only thing I could
think of at the time was that somebody
had stolen my truck.
I thought about calling the police,
and then I thought better and decided I
would call my wife first. You know what
it is like when your wife hears something
secondhand. And so I called her.
“I can’t find my truck,” I said trying to
keep my voice as calm as possible not to
get her upset, “I think somebody stole it.
Should I call the police?”
Silence on the phone. Then I heard her
say in a very calm voice, “Whoever stole
your truck parked it in our driveway.”
I then remembered I was driving her
car.
I tried to chuckle within but I knew
that this incident would hang in our
house for months to come and I have
Mr. Murphy to thank for that.
It was such a horrific week and I was
so deep in trouble with my Better Half, I
decided to take her out Friday night for a
nice meal on the town. I took her to her
favorite restaurant and we ordered our
supper, then set back and kind of sighed
the week away. Maybe all that could go
wrong has gone wrong and the week was
about to turn around.
We chatted; I tried to skew the
conversation away from running out of
gas and misplacing my truck. Then the
waitress came with our meal. I was ready
to settle down, enjoy a scrumptious meal
and end the week on a happy note.
The waitress set my wife’s plate in front
of her and she smiled. Then the waitress
set my plate in front of me and I freaked
out. For some reason the waitress got my
order mixed up with somebody else’s
order and right in the middle of my plate
was a pile of broccoli.
The only hope I have is that it cannot
get any worse than this. I think David,
the psalmist, understood this when he
wrote, “... weeping may endure for a
night, but joy cometh in the morning”
(Psalm 30:5 KJV).
As bad as it gets, as a Christian I have
some great things to look forward to in
Jesus Christ.

This year
is going
to be my
last year
teaching.
Yes, you heard me right; I’m
retiring. My wife is already
retired, receiving early
retirement disability benefits.
This means we can ride off
into the sunset together, like
Roy and Dale. Yet the thought
retiring still scares the holy
bejeezus out of me.
Like so many other middle-
class Americans, we have not
put nearly enough aside for our
golden years. It’s not that we
didn’t want to but with three
kids, four pets, two cars, and
a mortgage two teachers can
barely make ends meet from
paycheck to paycheck, much
less squirrel away the kind of
dough it takes to live high on
the hog in retirement.
What little cash we did stash
away in my 403(b) retirement
accounts was thoroughly
trashed in the 2008 stock
market crash. They lost more
than one-third of their pre-cash
value in a weekend. It was like
watching our money disappear
into a black hole. It was gone...
just gone...
Teachers are like cops and
firemen with most their life
saving tied up in the equity of
their homes and their pensions.
That’s why so many of them sell
their houses and move away to
places like Oregon, Nevada,
and New Mexico where their
retirement dollars go a lot
further than here in Southern
California.
For awhile we considered
Astoria, Oregon at the mouth
of the Columbia River. Housing
is more than reasonable for an
attractive home overlooking
some of the most beautiful
pine covered coastline north
of New Zealand. Of course all
that green means it rains a lot
and it does -- an average of
67 inches a year! But for pure
rugged beauty it’s hard to beat
Oregon’s North Coast.
After much thought, however,
we have decided to retire to the
Big Island of Hawaii where it
also rains a lot, but where the
rain is much warmer. Although
the price of certain necessities,
like gasoline and electricity
are higher in Hawaii, prices
at discount stores like Costco
and Target are about the same
as they are here. We feel any
extra costs are more than offset
by the benefits Hawaii offers
with its year-round tropical
weather, affordable housing,
lower taxes, and slower-paced
Aloha life-style.
Still, the fear of retiring
remains even without car
payments and a mortgage.
Future declining income due
to inflation is a scary prospect
for anyone retiring but it
is nothing new. We figure
our incomes as teachers, as
measured by buying power,
have been declining for years;
indeed, by our calculations we
make less now than when we
started teaching! The trick in
retirement will be keeping our
overhead in line with inflation.
It will be a difficult task but not
an impossible one.
Health care is another
worry. To what extent will our
lifetime employee coverage fill
in the gaps left in our Medicare
coverage? How much will we
still have to pay? Hawaii should
be praised in this respect since
it is one of the most progressive
states in the Union when it
comes to the supplemental
health and dental care for
its senior citizens (Did I say
“senior citizens”?).
One thing we definitely
don’t have to worry about are
family and friends coming to
visit. When my wife and I were
discussing whether Astoria
or Hawaii was best for us, my
wife voiced her concern about
being isolated from family
and friends, especially from
our new granddaughter. So I
conducted a little survey.
Hawaii won hands down.
All those surveyed agreed it’s
much easier to fly to Kona or
Hilo than fly to Portland, and
then drive another two hours
to Astoria. Everyone also
agreed Hawaii is much more
vacation-friendly than Astoria.
Apparently sunning on the
beach, snorkeling, surfing,
hiking, or golfing in year-
round tropical Hawaii is much
more appealing than what’s
available along the chilly North
Coast of Oregon.
When I asked my daughter
about whether she’d rather
visit us in Astoria or Hawaii
she snapped, “Are you kidding
Dad... That’s a no-brainer...
Hawaii of course!” When I
asked my oldest son he got
right to the point, “When are
WE leaving?”
