VOLUME 7 NO. 28

Inside this week:

HOST OF VILLAGE VINE’S CAM I AM
SHOW PASSES UNEXPECTEDLY

Camella Diane (Palumbo) Hopkins,
known affectionately to her friends as
CAM, died suddenly on Sunday at the
age of 51. She had become a familiar
face in Sierra Madre, frequenting the
local shops and restaurants. In fact,
she was making plans to come to town
and see on of her favorite shows, ‘The
Fantastics’ at the Sierra Madre Playhouse
at the time of her death.

Cam was the host of “The Cam I Am”
show on Village Vine internet radio.
Her voice permeated the airwaves with
wit and charm and each new show
brought engaging conversations with
performers from a broad spectrum
of the entertainment world. Her desire
to create a warm and comfortable
environment for her guests was felt
through her voice and in the hearts of
the many performers who graced the
studio.

 A professional comedian, she was
truly a laugh a minute, always willing
to volunteer when needed or lend a hand to anyone in need. For the last three
years, she volunteered during the Wistaria Festival as the greeter for those taking
the tour bus up to the Vine. Earlier this year, her ImprovCity comedy group
performed for the local Kiwanis Club. She was a person so full of life, that word
of her sudden passing left those who knew her numb.

Born on September 2, 1961, to Angelo & Therese Palumbo in Lynwood, California.
She married her beloved husband Craig in 1981. Her beloved son Ryan
was born in 1982.

Camella enjoyed a 25 year career in education and speech pathology and
touched many young lives with her devoted work. Additionally, Camella devoted
herself to the love and care of her family and home. Her love and joy always
touched the lives of her dear family.

Camella touched many additional lives through her work on stage, screen and
radio. As an accomplished performer and actress, she graced many audiences
and stages with her wit, charm, humor, energy and joy. She performed all over
Southern California with various improv groups, including Just Us, Just One
and ImprovCity. Stand up comedy, dramatic and comedic stage performances
and commercial acting were included in her repertoire.

A rich Native American heritage was celebrated through learning, creating
and collecting jewelry and artifacts. Her Italian heritage was ever present in
her life, her humor and her kitchen. She also embraced her husband's heritage,
learning the traditions and dishes of the Germanic peoples.

Services were held on Thursday at Rose Hill Memorial Park. You can hear a
special Memorial recap of Cam’s interviews and shows at www.villagevine.org.

COUNCIL EASES WATER

CONSUMPTION RESTRICTIONS

Mandatory Water Conservation Update

At Tuesday’s Sierra Madre City Council meeting, the following changes
were made to the Mandatory Water Conservation Program that was

established earlier this year:

• The penalty section of the conservation ordinance was modified to
eliminate the flow restrictor.

• The base period designation was modified to provide each water
customer with a summer water conservation target and a separate winter
conservation target. Letters with the new conservation targets will be
mailed to all water customers next week.

• For water customer accounts billed for multiple dwellings on a single
meter, the number of dwelling units will be divided into the bi-monthly
consumption to determine the conservation target.

The City will be sending out an updated letter to all water customers the
week of July 15th explaining the changes and specifying each customers'
revised conservation targets.

These changes were the result of the expressed concerns of residents especially
with the initial date for implementation was during one of the hottest
summers on record.

It was noted, however, that most residents did immediately start conserving
water, as Public Works Director Inman noted a significant decrease in
water use since the restrictions were put in place.

On another water related matter, this paper spoke with Director Inman
late last week regarding a frequently asked question about how and where
the city captures water run off on city streets. Several residents expressed
concern that under such tight water conservation measures, the city was not
taking advantage of capturing run-off from lawn irrigation, etc.

In answer to this inquiry, Inman indicated that the city does in fact collect
water run off that is above Grand View and flows east. That water is
collected in the debris basin on Grand View. He noted however, water run
off below Grand View heading toward the ocean is not captured, as the city
currently does not have the ability to do so. When asked what it would cost
the city to install a system to capture water flowing in that direction, Inman
indicated that it would be expensive, in the millions of dollars.

JOIN THE CELEBRATION – LIZZIE’S TRAIL
INN DINNER IN THE PARK JULY 20TH

 Join the celebration! The Sierra
Madre Historical Preservation Society
(SMHPS) will be celebrating Lizzie
Stoppel and her Trail Inn Restaurant
with dinner in the park featuring the
famous Fried Chicken and Ravioli
dinner, live music provided by Joe
Tortomasi and his ukulele featuring
popular tunes from the 30’s and 40’s,
museum and garden tours, and the
long anticipated silent auction of
vintage items from the Museum’s
collection.

Be the first to learn about our new
electronic storyboard, where the past
and present merge for an unforgettable
interactive view of local history. And
you can meet the legendary Lizzie
in person; a colorful entrepreneur
who was not opposed to occasionally
bending the law a bit when it suited
her purposes. She’s a character you
won’t soon forget.

 With restoration work about to
begin on Richardson House, SMHPS
needs to make some room, so they’re
clearing out the store room with a
silent auction. Items in the auction
include furniture, trunks, clothing,
collectibles, tools, kitchenware, picture
frames and more. There’s something
for everyone!

Join your friends and neighbors for
a fun evening on Saturday, July 20th,
from 5-8 P.M at the Mt. Wilson Trail
Park, 189 E. Mira Monte Ave.

Tickets are limited and must be
purchased in advance. There will be no
ticket sales the day of the dinner. Tickets
are $25.00 and are available at Mary’s
Market, Arnold’s Hardware, Savor the
Flavor, the Library, and at Lizzie’s Trail
Inn (Saturdays, 10 – Noon). For more
