FRIENDS OF THE SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY ART FAIR
The 52nd annual Friends of
the Sierra Madre Library’s art
fair will be held in Memorial
Park, 222 W. Sierra Madre
Blvd. in the city of Sierra
Madre on Saturday, May 3,
2014 from 9:30AM to 6:00PM
and Sunday, May 4, 2014
from 9:30AM to 5:00PM.
More than 95 artists will be
displaying and selling their
fine art during the weekend,
including our featured artist,
Beverly Jones, whose wow-
inspiring designs, meticulous
craftsmanship and attention
to detail made her the obvious
choice as the first jeweler to be
given this honor. Make sure
to stop by her booth to admire
her lovely creations and to
purchase a unique piece of
jewelry.
At this time, many of the
artists have donated lovely
one-of-a-kind pieces to be
auctioned off in a Silent
Auction which means that
you’ll have a chance to bid on
some really beautiful artwork.
The auction will begin on
Saturday and end at 4:30
Sunday when the winners will
be announced.
For the children, the Creative Arts Group has
planned an imaginative craft activity from
10:00am-4:00pm both days. Participants will
have an opportunity to have fun creating a design
on the wings of a butterfly.
Food trucks will offer a variety of food and drinks
that will be sure to please even the most picky
eaters. You’ll be able to purchase everything
from Mexican tortas to German brats as well as
good old-fashioned burgers, chili, and New York
deli. And of course, the Friends will be selling
their famous homemade quick or sweet breads.
New this year is a wine and beer garden that will
be open both afternoons.
Live music will be featured throughout the
weekend. Chair of music for the Art Fair, Jean
Sudbury, has a wonderful line-up of music
planned for both days. In the band shell on
Saturday from 11:00AM-1:00PM you’ll be treated
to world class guitarists Steve Trovato and Tim
Kobza playing a fusion of country, rock, jazz, and
blues. Accordionist and composer Nick Ariondo
will be playing world music at its finest from
2:00-4:00PM on Saturday. Larry Tuttle and Novi
Novog known as String Planet will be in the band
shell on Sunday from 11:00AM-1:00PM offering
their cunningly creative classical rock fusion.
Later that afternoon from 2:00PM-4:00PM
Cow Bop, Bruce Forman and Pamela Forman,
the hottest Western bebop band on earth will
be playing for your listening pleasure. At other
times during the day a bit of strolling music
will undoubtedly occur. Each day on the south
lawn at 1:00 Jean has an exciting new happening
planned, the Green Room. She will be there
with her variety of stringed instruments to share
some of her favorite music and inviting guests to
join in. The guest list will include some of the
performing artists, local musicians and friends
who have performed at other art fairs, some
performers from the Renaissance Fair, and other
surprise guests. She will have music for some
to read if they choose or play by ear, somewhat
old-time string band style with a European twist.
To add to the creative display and give a real
community arts festival flair Jean plans to have
tables lined with paper, colored pencils, crayons,
chalk, etc. set up for instant inspiration and art in
the making.
So plan to spend a day with us, strolling through
the park admiring and purchasing unique artwork
done in a wide variety of mediums, listening to
lovely music, and feasting on scrumptious lunches
or snacks. Proceeds from the Art Fair benefit
the resources and programs of the Sierra Madre
Library. For more information, call 626 355-7186

WALKING SIERRA MADRE……THE SOCIAL SIDE
By Deanne Davis
“Jenny kissed me when we met, jumping from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief, who love to get sweets into your list, put that in!
Say I’m weary, say I’m sad, say that health and wealth have missed me,
Say I’m growing old, but add…. Jenny kissed me.” James Henry Leigh Hunt
In addition to all the glorious roses popping up all over town, I’ve been observing a nice thing lately,
walking through Sierra Madre. It’s people kissing. Couples sharing a quick kiss as they’re headingoff to work, jumping into separate cars with a cup of coffee; friends giving a goodbye smooch afterclass in front of Sierra Fit Pilates as they scatter to start their day; a kiss on top of the head for a dogwho has sat patiently in front of Starbucks waiting for his/her owner to return; and best of all, parentskissing their little ones goodbye before they race off to school. That morning scramble is a very hectictime, an hour packed with trying to get little people dressed, teeth brushed, something nutritious in
their tummies, organizing the backpack, getting the hair combed, finding the permission slip and thelunch, and not losing the parental temper because wee ones have a tendency to move at snail speedin the morning. I shudder to think how many times I did not kiss my little ones goodbye before they
left for school. I think parents are doing it better these days.
My walking partner, the athletic hiker-up-to-First- Water-on-the-Mt.-Wilson-Trail, John, and Imake it to the gym about once a week. Our goal is twice a week but it’s a good week if we make
it once. After sign in, he heads for the weight room and I take my book to the treadmills where Iread and walk two miles, while people run marathons on either side of me. Currently, it’s “Spend
All Your Kisses, Mr. Smith” by Jack Smith, a columnistfor the Los Angeles Times that I read faithfully for yearsand years. Jack Smith was acerbic, opinionated, and
funny. He held very little back regarding his personal
life and family. Personal stuff is the most interestingthing anyone can write about as we are all consumedwith curiosity about how those around us live.
Jack came across the quote, “Spend All Your Kisses,”
in a book which he put down and was never able tolocate again among his stacks and stacks of books. He
attributed it to a Roman Philosopher, but wasn’t sure
which one. The phrase and the concept stuck with him, and, apparently, with his wife, Denny, too,
and a couple of years later on Christmas morning Jack found she had “laid out 18 pieces of woodentype – each piece ¾ of an inch thick and one inch tall, backwards, of course, the words being inreverse order and each letter backwards, in the way of moveable type. The type face still bore thestain of the ink used to print out the message on a long piece of coarse linen, which was also laid outon the couch -Spend All Your Kisses.” He was beyond delighted.
Jack Smith went on to conjecture about the fact that “there is no point in taking any of one’s wealthinto the next world. Why keep a kiss, a gesture, a word that might give a moment’s pleasure orreassurance to someone else.” He finished, “there is little chance, that I will get out of this world withmoney…and now, thanks to my wife, to an ancient poet and my ability to read backwards – I am notlikely to get out with any unspent kisses, either.”
Maybe the reason I’ve been noticing kiss giving and receiving a lot lately is that we’ve just celebrated avery special kiss occasion. Our 47th anniversary. As we spent all our spare time together, and workedtogether, too, before we were married, I figure I’ve been kissing this same nifty guy for 49 years.
That’s a lot of kisses! But, just like Jack Smith, I want to spend all my kisses
“Just Today…Spend All Your Kisses!”
If each of us had time, and time,
And time enough to spare,
There still would not be time enough,
To turn away from love.
But each of us has just today, held tightly in our hands.
So what’s the perfect thing that I can do with my today?
Let go of anger, bitterness, and, poor put-upon little me!
I’ll let God touch me deep inside and heal me where I hurt.
I’ll spend all my kisses, and squander my smiles!
I’ll hug everyone that I see.
I’ll find something wonderful in everything,
And folks will see something wonderful in me.
I’ll delight in my dinner, and eat dessert first!
Complaining? That’s just not my style.
I’ll live out this day and make it my best,
A day filled with joy, fun and zest!
For none of us has time, and time,
And time enough to spare.
We’ve just this day, so bright, fresh and sunny,
To make a difference, a ripple in our pond.
So let’s plant a flower, and pull out a thistle!
Hug a friend, care if somebody cries.
And notice! Oh notice!
If God has put a rainbow in our sky.
We’ve time, and time,
And time enough for this,
Just time enough for this.
Why not spend all your kisses today!
