PUBLIC INVITED TO VIEW SOLAR
ECLIPSE AT MOUNT WILSON
OBSERVATORY

MOUNT WILSON, CA — On Thursday, October 23, the public
is invited to view a partial eclipse of the Sun from the grounds of
the world-famous Mount Wilson Observatory in the San Gabriel
Mountains above Pasadena.

Several telescopes, equipped with filters for safe solar viewing, will
be set up in the Observatory parking lot for the public’s enjoyment.
In addition, the historic 150-foot solar tower telescope will be open
so visitors can view the large projected image of the Sun throughout
the eclipse.

The eclipse begins at about 2:00 p.m., reaches a maximum at 3:30
p.m., and ends just before 5:00 p.m. At eclipse maximum the Sun
will be about half covered, as the Moon passes in front of it. This
partial eclipse till be visible throughout most of North America, but
will not be total anywhere on Earth.

The Observatory grounds are open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. daily from April through November. On October 23, the
Observatory’s “Cosmic Café,” where visitors to this historic site can
purchase fresh-made sandwiches, hot dogs, soft drinks, snacks and
souvenirs, will also be open.

Mount Wilson was home to the world’s largest telescopes during the
first half of the 20th Century. The Observatory’s astronomers utilized
those powerful instruments to revolutionize our understanding of
the Universe. The Hubble Space Telescope was named for Mount
Wilson’s most famous astronomer, Edwin Hubble, who used the
100-inch Hooker Telescope to prove that the Universe is expanding.

Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side by Deanne Davis

“Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,

Do not wait to shed your light afar,

To the many duties ever near you now be true,

Brighten the corner where you are.”

Ina D. Ogden - 1913

It’s obvious that Nora Graham, owner of Sierra Juice Company,
could have taken this dear old hymn as her life motto as that’s
exactly what she does: Brightens the corner where she is! One
of the nicest places to walk to in Sierra Madre is the Sierra Juice
Company at the corner of Baldwin and Kersting Court. My
horticulture-loving walking buddy, John, and I always stop to see
what the juice lady’s planted now! It’s one of the prettiest places
in town, too, as Nora arrives daily at 4:30 a.m. to water, transplant,
prune, fertilize and encourage her garden right outside the front
door and sweep and clean the entire corner. The tables at Sierra
Juice are a delightful place to sit and enjoy a smoothie, salad, or
sandwich. This peaceful spot is perfect for daily viewing of our
own personal mountains and Nora wants each of her guests to feel
relaxed and happy as they enjoy her hospitality.

Nora has been beautifying the corner for ten years now this
October! We have no trouble at all seeing why Sierra Juice is such a
success as she puts her heart, soul, and spirit into the business and
has a real connection with her customers. As she puts it, “I’m not
about money at all!” she keeps up with a number of our seniors and
has smoothies custom-made for their particular health needs and
many of our local kids pick Sierra Juice for their after-school snack
as they know they’ll get exactly what they’d like. Nora’s husband,
Brian Graham, is a three-time past Mr. America and many of the
juice recipes are his. Sierra Juice Company prides themselves on
their ability to create the right smoothie for each person, i.e., if
you’re tired or feeling draggy, have they got a drink for you!

A financial analyst for 33 years with Warner Bros., Nora fell in
love with Sierra Madre and its residents and realized she just had
to be here. She’s a terrific gardener, as anyone can see, and her
flowers and plants change with the season. Right now, Sierra Juice
is decorated with giant Halloween spiders, ghosts and witches, in
addition to ferns and fall plants. She says that whenever anyone is
looking for her she’s out in her garden.

“Love and Respect…are what we are about!” Nora Graham

Nora is very proud of each of the items on her menu, which,
though not extensive, focuses on each and every ingredient being as
fresh as it can possibly be. Quality, she says, is the most important
thing and each menu item is made fresh that minute for each
customer. Her bread is fresh daily and the tuna she uses is white
albacore only! Her chicken salad, egg salad, turkey and ham are the
best available and she has folks coming from all over the southland
for a sandwich and a smoothie. She particularly mentioned a
Beverly Hills surgeon who comes in after a particularly grueling
day for a refreshing smoothie and sandwich with Nora. Many
of the drinks Nora stocks are by request from local friends and
she travels quite a distance to get exactly the best kind of coconut
water. Sierra Juice Company also caters, in case you’re thinking
of an upcoming special event and if you’d like sandwiches for a
meeting or event, you can call Nora and place your order.

Like all the business owners in Sierra Madre, Nora loves to give
back to the community. She refers to the Police Department and
the Fire Department guys as “her kids” and you’ll frequently see
groups of them in Nora’s juice garden. This is her delight, to see
local friends enjoying the spot she has created. Stop by Sierra
Juice Company for a sandwich and a smoothie. They’re open 8:00
am - 5:00 pm Mon.-Sat. and 8:00 am – 4:00 pm on Sunday. They’re
at 1 Kersting Court and here’s the phone number for those call
ahead orders; 626-836-1293

Hey! Walking Sierra Madre Friends, I have a really neat book
out! “A Tablespoon of Love, A Tablespoon of Laughter” is available

Officers noticed several personal items of
cosmetics and clothing left on the passenger
seat, along with the glove compartment being
left open in a manner as if it were ransacked.
This case has been forwarded to the Detectives
Bureau.
