major incidents handled by the Department during this period.
Sunday, October 5:
Just before 2:35 a.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a
bicyclist in the 400 block of Santa Clara Street for riding without a rear
reflector. The subject confessed to having two knives in his pockets. The
officer discovered the 53-year-old White male was also in possession of
methamphetamine. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City
Jail for booking.
At approximately 7:55 p.m., an officer contacted a male subject sleeping on
a park bench in the area of Bonita Park, 100 South Second Avenue. While
conversing with the subject, the officer noticed the man was intoxicated
and unable to care for himself. The 26-year-old Hispanic male was
arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

of Canyon Road regarding a report of a dog chasing two bears. Officers
discovered the pit bull escaped from his yard and was chasing the bears
into a nearby resident’s yard. The owner of the pit bull, a 51-year-old
Hispanic male, was issued a citation for failing to keep the dog on a 6’
leash.
At approximately 9:04 p.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on
a vehicle in the area of Baldwin Avenue and Gate 8 for lane straddling.
Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of an
alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. An investigation revealed

content greater than .08%. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia
City Jail for booking.
Tuesday, October 7:
Just after 12:57 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the

Around 8:47 a.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Race Track,
285 West Huntington Drive, regarding a commercial burglary report.
Surveillance footage revealed an unknown male entered the Horse Racing
TV trailer, rummaged through items, and consumed two bottles of
alcoholic beverages before exiting the location. The suspect is described as
a White male, approximately 60-year-old, with long gray hair, thin build,
normal height, wearing a blue hooded jacket and dark colored pants.
Wednesday, October 8:
Shortly after 2:12 a.m., an officer initiated an enforcement stop on a vehicle
in the area of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive for failing to stop
at a red light. While the subject’s vehicle was still in motion, the driver

but was unable to locate him. The officer discovered the vehicle, which
was registered out of San Gabriel, contained a bag with a white crystalline
substance similar to methamphetamine. The subject is described as a
thin, light skinned Hispanic or White male, in his mid-twenties, and
approximately 6’ tall. The suspect was outstanding at the time of the
report and the investigation is ongoing.
At about 1:07 p.m., officers responded to Macy’s at the Santa Anita Mall,
400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. An investigation

room, and exited the store without making payment. She was arrested
and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Department front counter regarding a fraud report. The victim stated she
received a phone call from someone named “Michael Sinclair”, who spoke
with a heavy Indian accent and identified himself as being with the US
Department of Treasury. The caller told the victim she owed back taxes
and would need to pay nearly $5,000 to avoid having a warrant issued
for her arrest. The victim complied and paid $4,981.50 using Green Dot
cards. The victim then realized the phone call was a scam.
Around 9:15 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a bicyclist in the
area of Colorado Boulevard and Monte Vista Road for not having proper

and Palm Avenue regarding an assault report. An investigation revealed
a male victim got into a verbal altercation with the driver of a nearby
vehicle. As the victim rode away on his bike, the driver of the vehicle,
a 21-year-old Asian male, swerved and purposefully hit the victim. The
driver then reversed and hit the victim a second time. The victim refused
medical attention. Investigation is ongoing.
Saturday, October 11:
Just after 2:53 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Methodist Hospital
regarding a 19-year-old male who admitted himself for injuries he
endured while being robbed. The victim said he was riding his skateboard
down an alley near the 100 block of East Huntington Drive when he was
approached by four subjects. One of the suspects asked if the victim was
a gang member before punching him in the face numerous times. The
victim passed out and after regaining consciousness, realized his gold ring
was stolen. The victim described the suspect as an unidentified Hispanic
male, approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall, 230 pounds, and wearing dark
clothing. The victim was treated for his injuries. The identity of the other
subjects remains unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle
in the area of Santa Anita Avenue and Lemon Avenue for speeding. Upon
contacting the driver, the officer discovered the 23-year-old White male
had an expired license. He was cited and released in the field. The vehicle

Arcadia’s former Mayor (1st Woman) Floretta Lauber and
City Clerk Gene Glasco

2014 Crystal Ball certainly WAS the most special one ever as predicted by
Christine Antonovich. She and her husband LA County Supervisor Mike
Antonovich were the honorees of this 25th Annual Crystal Ball, and the
entertainment was provided by legendary singer/songwriter Paul Anka.
Why were the Antonoviches honored? Christine joined the Methodist
Foundation in 2009; she has co-chaired Crystal Ball three times, sponsored
the event and served as a member of the Crystal Ball Committee. She and
Mike have participated in numerous important activities and campaigns.
Mike feels “It is important to have a solid medical care system in place to
serve our residents. We’ve participated in a number of hospital programs…
our children have received services at Methodist Hospital…We’ve always
appreciated the service and quality of care…It’s a great honor to receive this
recognition…the event goes a long way toward upgrading the care that the
hospital provides, keeping it on the cutting edge so that it can provide better
service to those who need medical treatment.
The Co-Chairs of Crystal Ball 2014 were former Mayor Mickey Segal and
Ron Okum, both Foundation Board Members and longtime Crystal Ball
supporters. “Mickey is an amazing man who has a lot of energy,” Christine
said. “He is focused, and Crystal Ball is a special event whenever he is
involved.”
Co-chair Ron Okum and wife Nan Have known Mike since their college
days at CAL State LA. Like Mickey, Ron has contributed greatly through
volunteer efforts on behalf of various organizations in the San Gabriel Valley
and throughout Los Angeles County.
It was Mickey who brought Paul Anka as entertainment, an unprecedented
third time, to the Crystal Ball. Paul’s known Mickey for 30 years and “After
my introduction to Methodist Hospital through the Segals, I discovered
what an important organization it is…to be invited back to experience the
enthusiasm of the audience and the achievement of money raised for such a
good cause…I am very honored to be part of it.”
The current Methodist Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit has a 20-
bed capacity with a waiting list, so it plans to refit the third floor of the Berger
Tower, expand to 30-beds, new dining facilities, physical and occupational
therapy spaces and new equipment…the new unit will meet all seismic
requirements, provide access to the acute care floors of the hospital and have
larger in-room bathrooms. The cost will be over $3 million, so the Methodist
Hospital Foundation Board of Directors approved a new capital campaign.
Although several donors have made generous gifts, additional funding is
needed; thus we have Crystal Ball 2014.
What a spectacular evening and there are so many people who need to
be thanked! The Co-chairs, Ron Okum and Mickey Segal and committee
members who worked long hours to pull this event together-without them,
this couldn’t have happened. Also the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board
who recognized the necessity for a new Rehab center and spearheaded the
campaign for funding, sponsors for the event, those who either donated great
Silent Auction items or purchased them, the Red Carpet and photographer
when we arrived, the wonderful Social Hour with wine, drinks, Hors
d’oeuvres, a second indoor photographer, the sumptuous dinner, beautiful
centerpieces, and of course those who made very generous donations at the
Ball after the auction.
The Title Sponsor was Cole & Cindy Harris; Grand Sponsor, Mike &
Christine Antonovich, Angela Y. Fu, Cole and Cindy Harris; Golden Orchid,
Dick & Sue Hale & Ron & Nan Okum; Panda Restaurant Group, Inc., The
Paradigm Financial Group-Joel Solomon, ChFC, Pacific Life, Crump-Robert
DiMeo; Micket & Lee Segal & Alan & Sandy Whitman; STARTECH, Crystal
Sponsor, Sierra Family of Auto Dealerships, Claudia-Tu-Independent Acute
Dialysis Services, Inc.; Platinum Sponsor, Allied Pacific of California, IPA,
DaVita Healthcare Partners, dunsitD2 Constance Pasadena, East West Bank,
EDI Media Inc.-Asian American Cultural and Artistic Foundation, Bill &
Sumi Hughes, Aner & Rebecca Iglesias, Christopher Lin, Medine Industries,
Inc., Methodist Hospital Staff, Pacific Western Bank, Sodexo: On Site Service
Solutions and the Sugimoto Family Foundation. There also were many Gold
Sponsors and Underwriting Sponsors.
After we entered the Ballroom, the Program began. There was a warm
welcome by Hospital President/CEO Dan Ausman and Foundation President
Mike Dreibe. We viewed a video that featured a man who had suffered a
stroke and was admitted to the Rehab Unit. His recovery was amazing and
then we saw the proposed new unit. The Co-Chairs Mickey and Ron thanked
all attendees and sponsors and acknowledged that such an event could not
happen without so many Committee Members who worked many hours to
pull it all together.
I had the pleasure of sitting with Arcadia’s first female Mayor, Floretta
Lauber , City Clerk Gene Glasco and Doneva Garcia, Public Relations and
Communications Manager at Methodist. I was blown away by Paul Anka and
when I walked over to take a photo of him dancing with Christine, I met old
friends, former Sheriff Lee and Carol Baca. It was truly an evening I will never
forget.
An early estimate is about $700,000 raised. If you were not able to attend,
but realize how vital this new Rehab Unit is, the Foundation would greatly
appreciate donations. Please visit www.methodisthospital.org/planned
giving.

LOCAL AUTHOR TO SPEAK
VETERAN’S DAY WEEKEND
Local author Susan S. Rosvall will speak about her new
book Silence Is Broken in a way that both entertains
and informs the audience on Saturday, November 8,
2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Arcadia Public Library. Her
book is an historical novel based on her brother’s one-
year deployment to Vietnam in 1966. At the end of the
slideshow and talk, the author will be available for book
purchases and book signing.
“Thematically, Silence Is Broken goes beyond the
plot-driven story of a soldier. It’s about self-reliance and
personal courage. It’s about metamorphic qualities of war
and the healing power of empathy. At the broadest and most universal level, it’s
about informed citizenship and the just use of deadly force.” Excerpt from the
website http://www.silenceisbrokenthenovel.com/book.php
It is more than just a story about one soldier’s experience in Vietnam, but of
the Civil Rights Movement and how its influence played out during this time.
With the upcoming fiftieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the Civil Rights
Movement, this should be a thought-provoking and informative talk that you
won’t want to miss.
Since 1998, Susan S. Rosvall has taught English Composition at California
State University, Los Angeles. Over the past several years she developed a theme-
based course on just war theory with an emphasis on jus ad bellum, the just
causes or motives for war. Recently, she has traveled to Vietnam and the
American South, where she has researched the Vietnam Conflict and the
American Civil Rights Movement, respectively.
Ms. Rosvall received a B.A. in English from the University of California at Los
Angeles, an M.S. in Education from the University of Southern California, and
an M.A. in TESOL (linguistics) from California State University, Los Angeles.
Rosvall, mother of three grown children, is married and currently resides in San
Marino, California with her husband. This is her first novel.
