THE JOY OF YOGA
TRUE FREEDOM

If there were a
list of qualities to
aspire to in our
yoga practice,
freedom would
be on that list. Our bodies call out for freedom,
we all desire that stretch and range of motion
in our joints. We especially want personal
freedom, or spiritual freedom, the ability to be
who we are without reservation or resistance.
There are some with the opinion that freedom
gives a license to do whatever want. This school of
thought can often lead to excess (food, drink) and
depletion. We end up cutting out healthy practices
that nourish us in lieu of instant gratification.
The end result leaves us unsettled and restricted.
Having a framework, or structure in place in
our physical and spiritual practice can actually
provide more of the freedom we desire. Take
our asana practice, for example. We can practice
without presence, moving in and out of poses at
half measure. Alternately, we can find alignment
in each pose, stick with our breath and complete
challenging parts of the practice. What do you
think the benefit is in each practice? Which practice
will give us the freedom to be who we want to be?
How about our spiritual practice and
life habits? What benefit would a structured
discipline provide there? Yes, I said it. Discipline.
Freedom requires discipline. I’ve heard discipline
defined as “ intellect winning over disposition”.
We act with the greater good in mind, and move
past our own resistance. In this case, intellect can
be our friend and help to keep us on the Path.
To me, true freedom is defined as our
ability to live our true purpose with joy and
happiness. We remain stable in the midst of
change, yet easily adjust to life’s unexpected
twists and turns. We actually become more
flexible, possibilities open to us. With this
freedom, our own resistance diminishes and our
own joy and inspiration leads the way. We’ve
just got to provide the structure and alignment.

HEALTHY, WEALTHY AND WISE
by Dennis R. Buckley, D.C.
Summer is here. If
you are like me you
have lots of plans.
Do you have the
resources to meet
your goals? Is there enough money, time and
energy to let you enjoy this time of year?
Building wealth is a lot like building health. It
takes time and consistent effort. When you invest
money in vehicles such as stocks, bonds, money
markets, or real estate, you expect a return on
your investment in the form of interest. When
you invest in yourself you also want to receive
interest, its called “self interest.”
The process of wealth building and health
building parallel each other. The principles they
are based on are similar. In building health, the
six facets are:
Exercise
Nutrition
Posture
Sleep
Attitude
Fully functioning spine and nervous system
In wealth building the six facets are:
Goal settingDebt ManagementRisk Tolerance
PhilanthropyBudgetingTax Planning
Exercise to the body is goal setting to the bank
account. You have to move to be healthy and
you have to move your goals upward as you
meet them. Nutrition to the body is like debt
management. You have to know the good fat from
the bad. Too much debt like fat can kill the body
and your bank account. Posture to the body is
like risk tolerance. How do you want to position
yourself. You need different postures for different
activities in your day and your risk tolerance
changes through your life. Sleep restores the
body as philanthropy is a wealth building secret
that many forget. As you give the body sleep it
is strengthened and rejuvenated. As you give you
circulate your abundance and it returns to you,
it will be more than you gave to rejuvenate your
accounts. Attitude to the body is like budgeting
to the finances. How you see the world and
your response to it is like budgeting, where do
you place your resources, and how do you save
and spend. Spine and nervous system function
control and coordinate your body’s function. Tax
planning can allow you to flourish or fail. Tax
planning controls and coordinates your financial
function.
Building health and wealth go hand in hand. It
would be a shame to work hard to build your
empire and neglect your health. You would then
spend all your money trying to buy back those
years of neglect. It also would be terrible to take
care of your health and have no resources to
enjoy it with.
Start today to build your health and wealth. A
little attention daily to your health and wealth
will pay big dividends down the road. A little
neglect can have the opposite effect.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The first step to
wealth is health.” Make sure you are walking in
the right direction.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN
AGAINST SUN DAMAGE
Dr. Tina is a traditional
naturopath and nutri-
tionist at Vibrant Living
Wellness Center
Who doesn’t like
the feeling of warmsunlight hitting theirskin? Depending onthe time of year thisfeeling can be pureheaven. Without
the sun we would
not exist. It has the
most wonderful
life giving power.
The sun helps us toproduce vitamin D,
a hormone necessaryfor bone health and
optimal immune
function. Too much
of any good thing
can become a bad thing. This is true of sun light.
Too much sun affects our skin’s elasticity whichpromotes early aging of the skin. Now we have
this dilemma, how do we get the life giving,
health promoting benefits from the sun but avoidpremature aging or permanent skin damage?
Unfortunately, this dilemma causes many peopleto be frighten from getting any sun at all.
The way best way to protect against sundamage and to maintain healthy skin is from theinside out. Research shows that what you put intoyour body may be just as important, as or moreimportant than the protection you place on your
skin. Basically we have to make sure we are eatingfoods that will keep us protected. Antioxidants
do just that. Antioxidants are powerful naturalUV protectants. Some can be very helpful forprotecting us against accelerated skin aging due toUV exposure.
There is evidence that the spices turmericand ginger, both antioxidants, have protectiveeffects on skin health. Both of these spices are awonderful ways to add flavor to meals but theycan both be taken as supplements too. White tea,
one of the least processed varieties of tea and highin antioxidants, has been shown to be protectiveagainst early wrinkle formation.
Any plant food that is a natural source ofvitamin C or E is also an antioxidant. Most fruits
and vegetables contain some amount of Vitamin
C. Some great sources vitamin E are sunflowerseeds, almonds, spinach and avocado. Lycopene,
a compound found in tomatoes, has been shownto be protective against free radicals brought onby too much sunlight exposure. Studies show thatorganic tomato paste appears to have higher levelsof lycopene than raw tomatoes. Tomatoes alsocontain a number of other antioxidants, includinga high amount of vitamin C which complementslycopene’s protective action.
My advice is to make sure you get somesunshine on a regular basis and at the same timemake sure you are consuming nature’s natural sunprotectors!
