Do you remember Max Cleland?

He pushed veterans’ issues as Georgia state 
senator and served as administrator of the VA. He 
was later elected to the U.S. Senate where he was 
considered a Democratic “centrist” – supportingmany of the security and economic policies underGeorge W. Bush, while remaining pro-environmentand pro-choice.

At the urging of Karl Rove, Rep. Saxby Chambliss(R-GA) took on and defeated Senator Cleland in hisbid for re-election. In a TV campaign ad featuringpictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden,
Chambliss questioned Cleland’s commitment toour nation’s security.

Decades earlier, Chambliss received student 
draft deferments and a medical deferment for bad 
knees from football. Cleland received a Silver Star, 
Bronze Star and Purple Heart as an Army Captainin Vietnam. A month before he was to come home, 
Cleland lost both legs and his right forearm in agrenade explosion at Khe Sanh. He was 25.

That bin Laden / Hussein ad was condemned bya Senate colleague of Cleland’s and fellow Vietnamvet, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). For Rove and therest, though, it meant another GOP pick-up inthe Senate. As for the grenade explosion that tookCleland’s limbs, Ann Coulter dismissed it as an 
“accident” that could have happened “at Fort Dix .
. . Luckily for Cleland’s political career and currentpomposity about Bush, he happened to do it whilein Vietnam.” 

Tammy Duckworth earned her Purple Heartserving as an officer in the Army National Guard,
deployed to Iraq as a helicopter pilot. She sufferedthe loss of both legs and a shattered right arm whenthe Black Hawk she was co-piloting was shot down.
After serving in Veterans Affairs, in 2012 she tookon Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) for his seat in Congress.

Walsh accused Duckworth of not being a “truehero” because she talked about her injuries toomuch. That statement didn’t bother the Republicanbankrollers. He raised $7 million ($6 million fromoutside funders) to Duckworth’s $4.7 million, butwent on to lose by 10 points.

Tammy Duckworth spoke at the 2008 
Democratic Convention that nominated Barack 
Obama for president. Four years earlier, Democraticnominee John Kerry was introduced at the 
convention by Max Cleland.
That 2004 convention featured a number of Kerry’sfellow Vietnam vets in addition to Cleland. Kerry 

could have skipped the war as a student at Yale, butinstead enlisted in the Naval Reserve and requestedservice in Vietnam. 

Kerry received a Purple Heart after receivingshrapnel wounds north of Cam Ranh Bay. He stillhas shrapnel in his leg from when his boat was hitby an RPG round on the Bo De River, for which hereceived a second Purple Heart.

According to the citation awarding Kerry’sSilver Star, he “expertly directed” his boats’ fire andcoordinated the charge on enemy positions after hisboats were ambushed on the Duong Keo River.

A third Purple Heart and a Bronze Star (with “V”
for valor) came for actions taken when his boats hita minefield on the Bai Hap River. Wounded himself,
Kerry ordered his boat back, jumped in underenemy fire and rescued a Green Beret who’d beenknocked overboard by one of the explosions.

Bush’s having secured a stateside spot in the“Champagne Unit” of the Texas Air NationalGuard was still an issue in 2004, so Rove and the 
re-election team sought to discredit Kerry’s ownmilitary service. Major donors bankrolled “Swift 
Boat Veterans for Truth”, calling Kerry a liarand trivializing his medals. Its charges were laterdebunked by the official military record and byprior and subsequent statements of those veteransthemselves. (Jerome Corsi, who wrote the bookcompiling the charges, went on to obsess aboutPresident Obama’s birth certificate.)

Sen. John McCain supported Bush’s reelection,
but condemned the Swift Boat campaign; “I deplorethis kind of politics. I think this ad is dishonest anddishonorable . . . None of these individuals served 
on the boat (Kerry) commanded. Many of his crewhave testified to his courage under fire.”
No matter – delegates at the Republican conventionhad fun wearing Band-Aids with purple heartsdrawn on them to mock Kerry’s service.

This history came to mind as the RepublicanNational Committee released a statement 
responding to Trump; “There is no place inour party or our country for comments thatdisparage those who have served honorably.” OnCNN, Jake Tapper added, “Well, unless you’re aDemocrat”. 

Many in the GOP field now calling Trump’scomments on McCain’s service disqualifyinghave themselves received support from those 
who bankrolled the Swift Boat campaign. Theirumbrage isn’t about Trump’s disparaging anyone’sservice, however – it’s about his ability to suck up allthe media attention for himself. It’s about his refusal 
to rule out running as an independent should he notget the nomination, and about a recent poll showingthat while Hillary Clinton leads in a match-up withJeb Bush by 6 points, with Trump in the race thatlead expands to 16 points.
It’s about realizing that when Sen. McCain accusedTrump of having “fired up the crazies”, he wasreferring to the base the Republican Party has beencreating and encouraging over the past seven years.

She came to the defense of the man who’d pickedher as his running mate, “the sacrifices made byall ethical service members are heroic” – but then 
added, “Donald Trump is a hero in another area.”
Sometimes the crazies just won’t go away.

NO OUTRAGE FROM 
ENVIRONMENTALISTS ABOUT 
POT? 

File this in the large and growing ’Government 
Unintended Consequences’ folder. 

It seems that when the government tries to 
make good capitalists out of outlaws, many of 
the outlaw business practices stay the same. 
When repeal of the 18th Amendment legalized alcohol in the United 
States, after 13 years of poorly enforced teetotaling, the Mafia and the 
Outfit got out of the booze business and left it to the major distillers that 
had been on the sidelines waiting for sanity to return to a thirsty nation. 


That didn’t happen in California when the state legalized the sale and 
production of marijuana, because there were no major agribusiness 
firms that had ever been part of the tokin’ culture. Instead these pot 
outlaws that had been illegal for years were now legal, but with that old 
outlaw mentality. 

In fact, it appears the growers don’t appear to be very mellow at all. 

According to an editorial in the Fresno Bee, ”Acres of ancient trees are 
disappearing and illegal marijuana farms are popping up in their place. 
Streams and rivers are being sucked dry, diverted sometimes miles away 
through plastic pipes into tanks. Several species of fish, along with a rare 
breed of wild rodent, are on the verge of extinction.” 

Evidently this is because when you are an outlaw, it’s cheaper to despoil 
parkland and steal water than it is to buy your own land and your own 
water. 

The Bee puts part of the blame on consumers: ”Apathetic consumers 
seem unaffected by the environmental damage that weed causes. We buy 
fair-trade coffee and free-range chickens. Where’s the outrage about the 
environmental impact of marijuana?” 

But this is confusing. I always thought it was the marijuana consumers 
who were ”free—range” instead of the products. 

Naturally the Bee is calling for more ”regulation” of growers, but since 
when is squatting on state or federal parkland legal? To say nothing of 
diverting water and endangering species. 

Can’t the same environmental laws that crush homeowners who want to 
build an addition, farmers who want to spray for pests, developers that 
want to build on their land or manufacturers that find a dead bird on the 
property be used to stop lawless former maryjane outlaws? 

Wouldn’t it make sense to enforce the law already on the books and see 
if that solves the problem? 

Uprooting illegal marijuana fields in parks, confiscating the harvest, 
seizing bank assets and impounding growing equipment now would do 
more to restore order now than more ”regulation” in the future. 

The EPA is filled with environmental law ninjas that honed their skills 
on unsuspecting, law—abiding citizens. Why not turn them loose on the 
gangster growers?
