Police
Seek Help
to Identify
Assault
Suspects

Pasadena City Manager
Michael Beck to Resign

In a sudden announcement
last Friday, Pasadena City
Manager Michael Beck
said he will step down in
February to pursue a position
at UCLA.

His last day in city hall will
be Feb. 14. He starts at UCLA
March 1.

 According to reports, Beck
was approached by UCLA in
May about an administrative
vice chancellor position at
the college. Beck told city
employees, in a letter, that his
first reaction was to decline the
offer but later decided it was a
professional opportunity he
wanted to pursue.

 Pasadena Mayor Terry
Tornek said Beck’s departure
has nothing to do with a
$6.5 million embezzlement
uncovered last year. Tornek
said he asked him to stay not
leave. Along with Tornek,
city council members
have said they were always
impressed with how devoted
he was to the city.

 Beck said before becoming
Pasadena city manager in
2008 he held a position at
UC Riverside.

 The city has not released
any information as to Beck’s
replacement or who would
be city manager in the
interim.

 Since the embezzlement, in
which former public works
employee Danny Wooten
siphoned money from the city
for 11 years, Beck fired both
the city’s public works and
finance directors. At the time
there had been numerous
community leaders calling for
Beck resignation.

 Pasadena Police Detectives
are asking the public’s help
identifying the persons
responsible for assaulting
an elderly man resulting in
significant injuries.

 On October 13, at
approximately 3:30 pm, a 63-
year old male was walking
with a cane south on the west
sidewalk of Lake Ave, north of
E. Claremont St. As the elderly
victim neared the northwest
corner of Claremont St., he
saw three individuals on
Claremont St. just west of
him. For no apparent reason,
one of the three individuals
approached the victim and
shoved him to the ground
resulting in the elderly victim
sustaining a broken elbow and
collarbone. The three suspects
then ran west on Claremont
Street to an awaiting car. The
car drove north on Hudson
Ave. out of sight.

 The suspect that assaulted
the victim was described as a
Black male, 25-27 years of age,
6’1”, weighing approximately
175 pounds, clean shaven and
wearing a blue jersey with a
red collar and white lettering
on the front, blue pants and
a blue baseball cap. A second
suspect was described as Black
male, 25-27 years of age, and
wearing a white t-shirt and red
shorts; no further description.
A third suspect was described
as a Black male, 25-27 years
of age, 5’11”, 150 pounds,
with short twisted dreadlocks
and multiple tattoos on his
stomach and both arms. He
was only wearing gray cut-
off sweatpants and his hands
were wrapped in white tape
(similar to a boxer). The driver
was described as a Black
male wearing a white T-shirt
and white or gray shorts; no
further description

 The suspect vehicle is
described as a late model silver
Toyota Camry or similar.

 The investigation is on-going.
Anyone with information is
asked to contact Pasadena
Police Detective David Duran
at (626) 744-7113, or the non-
emergency number at (626)
744-4241.

Doo Dah
Celebrates
38th Year

With more than a month to go
before the Rose Parade, the city’s
“alter ego,” Doo Dah parade hit the
streets of East Pasadena Saturday
bring with it, everything, from a
pink convertible Cadillac DeVille
drivable hot tub to Cupcake Cars
to Klingons. This year marked the
parades 38th year.

 Royal Majesty Queen Veronika
MeowMeowzz (pictured right)
rode on a giant three wheeled
chopper.

 This year’s Grand Marshal was
singer/songwriter, dressed in a
red robe; Juli Crockett batted
off flying tortillas with a racket.
Throwing tortillas is a stable of
the parade.

The parade ended with a Secret
Santa, Doo Dah’s take on the
North Pole icon dressed in blue.

 Doo Dah was conceived in
1978 by several friends as an
irreverent alternative to the
traditional formality of the Rose
Parade.

City Holiday Tree Lighting

Public Invited To El Nino
Forum Tuesday Night

Pops Annual
Holiday Look
in Home Tour

 Weather forecasters and
scientists are predicting the
upcoming El Niño weather
pattern could bring severe
storms that will impact
Southern California with
flooding, mud slides, wind
damage, related power outages
and property damage. The City
is actively preparing to meet the
challenges of El Niño and urges
all residents and businesses to
do the same.

 The public can learn more
about the expected El Niño
weather system at a community
forum beginning at 7 p.m.,
Tuesday, at the Pasadena
Convention Center, Ballrooms
B & C, 300 E. Green St. William
Patzert, Ph.D., a Jet Propulsion
Laboratory climate scientist, is
keynote speaker. Officials from
several City departments will
present information. Doors
open at 6:30 p.m.

 The community forum is
sponsored by Councilmember
Steve Madison and is the latest
in a series of public meetings
hosted by the City or City
Council members. The City has
also created a special website at
www.cityofpasadena.net/Fire/
ElNino with tips, preparedness,
key phone numbers and sand
bag info. Anyone of lives or
works in Pasadena is urged to
register their phones at www.
cityofpasadena.net/Fire/PLEAS
to receive emergency alerts.

 The Cities of Pasadena,
Glendale and Burbank also are
working together to provide
emergency preparedness info
on a “Tri-Cities” website, www.
elninoready.org. The cities are
planning to send out mutual
social media info via Twitter
with the @VerdugoAlert
handle, www.twitter.com/
VerdugoAlert.

 Whether it’s an El Niño
event, major earthquake or
other disaster, all residents
and businesses should have
enough food, water and other
emergency supplies to last from
three days to a week, or longer,
in response to a widespread
emergency. It is not a matter of
“if” but “when” a disaster will
occur. All members of your
family, including pets, need to
be prepared at home, in the car,
and at work.

The keynote speaker is Jet
Propulsion Laboratory
climate scientist William
Patzert, Ph.D.
