JUST FOR BEST FRIENDS

HAVE A GRATEFUL DAY

LOOKING FOR A BEST FRIEND?

Happy Tails

by Chris Leclerc

To share the holidays with?
Dorothy is a blue and white,
six-year old Staffy mix with the
heart and soul of a guardian
angel! Dorothy was found
homeless wandering the streets
of Rosemead with a little friend
by her side. With nothing but
love to give; sweet Dorothy
became the best friend and
protector of a little Chihuahua,
now named Toto. The two girls
make quite the pair and would
love to stay together, if possible,
but they are enjoying making
new friends on their own.

 Though weighing about 51
pounds, Dorothy still makes
every effort to fit into one’s lap
for some gentle pets… until she happily falls
asleep within minutes. She truly enjoys spending
time with people, be it indoors or out, and is
happiest during her walks in the park. Although
Dorothy enjoys and looks forward to her walks,
she does not need long strenuous walks. Life on
the streets was rough without a family to care for
her and has taken a toll on Dorothy’s knees but
it’s nothing that can’t be fixed with medical care
and well deserved TLC.

With such a loving and protective nature,
Dorothy would make a great and loyal best friend
to anyone willing to give her the forever home she
so rightfully deserves!

She currently resides at the San Gabriel Valley
Humane Society located at 851 E. Grand Avenue
in San Gabriel. We are located off San Gabriel
Blvd., north of Mission and south of Las Tunas.
To arrange a ‘Meet and Greet’ with Dorothy,
and perhaps Toto, please stop by any time from
10:30am to 4:30pm Tuesday thru Sunday. Her
adoption fee is $145 and includes spay surgery,
vaccinations, microchip and a free wellness exam at
a participating veterinarian. Under the shelter’s
‘Adopt A Buddy’ program, a second dog adopted is
$39. Feel free to call us at (626) 286-1159 for more
information on Dorothy. If you are interested in
meeting Dorothy or any of the other wonderful pets
at the shelter, visit the San Gabriel Valley Humane
Society at 851 E. Grand Ave., San Gabriel, Calif.,
91776. See our website at www.sgvhumane.org for
information and photos of all our wonderful pets.

2016 calendars are available at the shelter for
a $10 donation. The photos were selected among
hundreds submitted by shelter supporters. They
make great holiday gifts for the animal lovers
on your list! If you would like to order a 2016
calendar on line, you can stop by the shelter or do
so through Paypal. Go to the shelter website at
sgvhumane.org for more information.

Last week, during a walk with “Brown”, one of
my favorite four-legged friends, we both seemed
unusually aware of how blessed we are to be alive,
just walking together and enjoying the weather.
Along the way we came across an unexpected,
subtle yet powerful Sierra Madre treasure.

This treasure could have easily gone unnoticed,
but somehow that day it caught my eye and it had
such a positive impact on me that I decided to
share it with my readers. Many thanks to the kind
neighbor who lives on Fairview Ave. for placing
this lovely treasure in the plastic letter dispenser
you put in your front yard, for passers-by such as
Brown and I to enjoy!

GRATITUDE:

You think this is just another day in your life. It’s
not just another day. It’s the one day that is given
to you - today. It’s given to you. It’s a gift. It’s the
only gift that you have right now. And the only
appropriate response is gratefulness.

If you do nothing else but to cultivate that
response to the great gift that this unique day is,
if you learn to respond as if it were the first day of
your life, and the very last day, then you will have
spent this day very well.

Begin by opening your eyes and be surprised
that you have eyes you can open. That incredible
array of colors that is constantly offered to us for
pure enjoyment.

Look at the sky. We so rarely look at the sky. We
so rarely note how different it is from moment to
moment, with clouds coming and going. We just
think of the weather, and even of the
weather we don’t think of the many
nuances of weather. We just think of
good weather and bad weather. This
day right now has unique weather,
maybe a kind of weather that will
never exactly be the same that is
right now. The formation of clouds
in the sky will never be the same that
is right now. Open your eyes. Look at
that.

Look at the faces of people that you
meet. Each one has an incredible
story behind their face. A story
that you could never fully fathom.
Not only their own story, but the story of their
ancestors. We all go back so far. And in the present
moment on this day, all the people you meet, all
that life from generations and from so many places
all over the world, flows together and meets you
here like a life-giving water if you only open your
heart and drink.

Open your heart to the incredible gifts that
civilization gives to us. You flip a switch and there
is electric light. You turn on a faucet and there is
warm water and cold water and drinkable water.
It is a gift that millions in the world will never
experience.

So these are just a few of an enormous number
of gifts to which you can open your heart. And so
I wish for you that you would open your heart to
all these blessings and let them flow through you.
That everyone whom you will meet on this day
will be blessed by you; Just by your eyes, by your
smile, by your touch - just by your presence. Let
the gratefulness overflow into blessing all around
you, and then it will really be a good day.
